Dodgers Notes: Grabow, Wright, Munoz, Kroenke
By Mark Polishuk [March 26 at 6:28pm CST]

Here's the latest from the Dodgers...
    • Jamey Wright has been told he will be added to the Dodgers roster once the team completes the official paperwork, tweets Dylan Hernandez of the Los Angeles Times. Hernandez previously reported that Wright can earn $900K if he makes the club's roster, with up to $500K extra in incentives based on innings pitched. It seems like L.A. had a choice to make between Wright and Grabow and chose Wright, and by letting Grabow walk before March 30, the Dodgers save paying him an extra $100K bonus.
    • The Dodgers have agreed to sign Dominican right-hander Bryan Munoz, reports MLB.com's Ken Gurnick. The deal is worth $300K and will be official once Munoz passes a physical. Munoz, 16, is represented by Kevin Bandel and throws a fastball "already touching 90 mph." The right-hander also drew interest from the Diamondbacks, Rangers, Tigers and Twins.
    • Though Los Angeles doesn't currently have an NFL team, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell considers the city to be a league market, reports Daniel Kaplan of SportsBusiness Journal. As such, the NFL's cross-ownership rules would apply if Stan Kroenke (who owns the St. Louis Rams) wins his bid to buy the Dodgers. If Kroenke indeed buys the team, Goodell told Bud Selig that the NFL "would move quickly" to resolve the issue. (Both links are to Twitter.)

    Giants Release Ramon Ortiz
By Mike Axisa [March 26 at 11:33am CST]

The Giants have released Ramon Ortiz, reports Hank Schulman of The San Francisco Chronicle (on Twitter). The Praver/Shapiro client signed a minor league deal with the Giants last month.

Ortiz, 39, appeared in 22 games for the Cubs last year, posting a 4.86 ERA with 6.8 K/9 and 3.0 BB/9 in 33 1/3 innings. The 11-year MLB veteran also made 16 starts at Triple-A, completing 99 1/3 innings with the Iowa Cubs. Ortiz struck out eight and allowed just three earned runs in 10 2/3 innings this spring, so there's a chance he'll hook on elsewhere.

The Giants would have owed Ortiz a $100K retention bonus had they kept him in the organization past a certain date thanks to the new collective bargaining agreement, notes Andrew Baggarly of CSN Bay Area (on Twitter).

What a relief it will be when Ned is finally out of here and we don't have to worry about him signing ex Giants anymore. We make jokes about it but we're half serious when an ex Giant becomes available because we know Ned might really consider it.

Yeah I believe so. Just read an article like 6 or 7 years old that said he was currently rated the No. #5 top prospect.

I'm not a champion for Grabow or anything, but what else is this guy supposed to do to show he can pitch on the roster? I mean really...and now Elbert is the sole lefty out of the BP? Is there another I'm missing?
Must be me, I saw other posts that didn't want the guy to make it, and I wonder why.
If you pitch like Tron, you should be released. But Grabow's numbers were fine...I guess this is over my head.

for once, i actually like what rosendouche has to say
although i think we should rank higher than 16th -- given some of the teams he has in front of us (reds, brewers)
    but time will tell

they found out his real name wasn't grabrow, but gaybro.

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- If the first baseball move of the new Dodgers owners should be locking up Andre Ethier long term, the team's hottest hitter this spring wasn't going there Wednesday morning.
"I'm open to anything, but at this time I'm focused on this year and getting it done on the field," said Ethier, who has recovered from September knee surgery and is potentially one of the most attractive of next winter's free-agent class.
"That's not a thing I'm addressing right now. That goes into the speculation thing. I'm just trying to play for the day, focus on winning and not whether I get a call from the front office."
Ethier said he was looking forward to meeting new co-owner Magic Johnson, and he was aware of co-owner Stan Kasten's reputation as the man in charge of the Braves' remarkable postseason run, as well as the Hawks and Thrashers -- what Ethier called "the trifecta president."
"It's an exciting time for the Dodgers, knowing [the new owners will] make the organization the best it can be," Ethier said. "It's a great opportunity for the team and franchise to get back on the right track, to get stability up front and, more important, on the field. That's the key -- to make the Dodgers the best franchise it can be and deserves to be, to give a product, top to bottom, that the people of L.A. can be proud of."
Ethier wasn't ready to conclude that the sale automatically boosts optimism.
"I'm not looking at that right now, we're just looking at winning games," he said. "If we put a good team together and make the playoffs, everybody will be happy. We just have to do our jobs and make the decision easy on the people above. It's way too early to play those games in your mind right now. This group has proven winners, but you still don't know what their goal is from Day One. Don't look too far ahead -- focus on right now."

Then why have him at ST at all? I don't get that as a reason at all.
You're giving the guy a look, obviously...whether he sucked all his career or not.
Then the guy pitches as good as he can, and you let him go...WTF is that? You want the guy to fuck up or do well and show you something...which he did.
