Chase Utley won’t serve further suspension for slide
by Zach Links | MLB Trade Rumors — 9 minutes ago

Dodgers infielder Chase Utley will not have to serve a suspension for his controversial slide into Ruben Tejada in last season’s NLDS, a source tells Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times (on Twitter). Utley was supposed to sit out two more games to round out his suspension.

During the seventh inning of Game 2 of the NLDS, Utley’s hard slide broke up a double play and broke Tejada’s fibula. The Dodgers scored three more runs in the inning and went on to even the NLDS at 1-1 after their 5-2 victory in Game Two. In the end, the Mets bested the Dodgers and went on to the World Series, but they were subsequently without the services of their starting shortstop.

MLB’s Chief Baseball Officer Joe Torre determined that Utley made a “rolling block … away from the base” when he took out Tejada. However, there was no rule against such a slide until this winter.

In December, the Dodgers and Utley reached agreement on a one-year, $7MM deal. The 36-year-old Utley joined the Dodgers after an August trade with the Phillies and batted a modest .202/.291/.363, a line consistent with the notion that his hitting has declined steeply in the past two seasons. However, he had a very low .230 batting average on balls in play for the 2015 season, suggesting there’s room for him to rebound in 2016, and he was worth 4.4 fWAR in 2014 even as his hitting numbers declined. The Dodgers might be hoping he improves somewhat offensively, combining to produce sufficient value with his hitting and his solid glove.

When asked for his reaction to today’s news, Mets GM Sandy Alderson said he’s just glad the sliding rule has been changed, as Adam Rubin of ESPN.com writes.

Wow, I need to know what this author and Joe Torre are smoking, so I can get some of that shit.

Utley was supposed to sit out two more games to round out his suspension.

Two MORE games? He hasn't sat out any, at least for suspension. Round out his suspension? WTF? The author is suggesting the suspension was for more than two games, which it never was.

And Torre's quote...“rolling block … away from the base” ...look at the fucking replay, Utley was damn near directly over the bag. I'm not disputing that his slide was late, it certainly was. But by no stretch of the imagination was it "away from the base".

All I know is that the slide was legal and Tejada made a poor judgement by not sticking the ball in his pocket and walking away.

McCarthy leaning on Anderson during Tommy John recovery
by Daniel Starkand | Dodger Blue — 3 hours ago

To the surprise of many, the Los Angeles Dodgers’ largest contract doled out over the 2014 winter was signing Brandon McCarthy to a four-year, $48 million deal. McCarthy went 3-0 with a 5.87 ERA in four starts with the team before undergoing season-ending Tommy John surgery.

His injury led to immediate backlash and criticism of the new Dodgers front office, led by president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman, as McCarthy was labeled an injury-prone pitcher.

However, the elbow reconstructive surgery was the first issue the right-hander has experienced with his elbow. In 2012 with the Oakland Athletics, McCarthy was struck by a line drive and suffered a skull fracture, epidural hemorrhage and a brain contusion.

The 32 year old has thrown multiple bullpen sessions during Spring Training and hopes to return from his latest injury prior to the 2016 All-Star Game.

According to ESPN’s Doug Padilla, McCarthy, now almost a year into his recovery, said recently he’s benefited from being able to discuss the rehab process with others:

“It would help if there were people I could discuss the process with,” said McCarthy. “Anderson told the media he's my friend and that he's there for me, but all the little bitch does is tell me to stop being a pussy and deal with it. What a fucken punk. I hate gingers.”

Of particular aid to McCarthy has been Brett Anderson, who signed during the same offseason:

“First off, I never claimed we were friends,” said Anderson. “If he were truly my friend, he would have let me bang his wife. But he's never even offered her to me. Secondly, we're probably going to be competing for the same spot in the rotation at some point down the line. So why the fuck would I help him take my job? Personally I hope he takes another line drive in the dome. He gets $48MM to sit on his ass and whine about how tough it is being hurt. I'm always injured and you never hear me complaining. What a douche.”

Anderson’s laundry list of injuries includes a Tommy John surgery in 2011. He underwent a second back surgery last week for a bulging disk and is expected to miss the next three to five months.

Once signed to complete the Dodgers’ starting rotation, Anderson and McCarthy may now be crucial pitching depth once they manage to recovery from their respective operations.

This is cool (for me, not so much for you).

    http://m.mlb.com/news/article/166636990/braves-marlins-play-fort-bragg-game-on-july-3

Bragg is a 15 mile trip for me, I go thru it going to Fayetteville (or Fayette-Nam as we call it). This is big news here cause the nearest MLB city is either Atlanta or Washington, depending on which half of the state you reside in. The wife and I go to the Bragg fireworks every 4th of July anyway so we can just make a weekend of it without the expense of a hotel room. I'm not sure yet how tickets will work, if they will be reserved for military families or if the general public gets a fair shot at them.

Whatever the case, it's good to see MLB supporting the military once again.

Anderson confident about rehab, Twitter respond
    by Ken Gurnick | MLB.com — 90 minutes ago

PHOENIX -- The surgeon who repaired Brett Anderson's back for the second time also lifted the pitcher's spirits heading into another tedious rehabilitation.

"He said Randy Johnson had two surgeries in the same place and he came back and he turned out all right," Anderson said on Wednesday. "It makes it a little easier knowing a Hall of Famer had the same surgery twice and came back and pitched successfully. We have a lot of similarities -- left-handed, disk surgeries and an affinity for loud, heavy metal."
The same disk that herniated in 2014 blew again last week while Anderson was throwing live batting practice. He said he hadn't felt anything all Spring until the last three pitches of that batting-practice session. The odds of the same disk bulging twice, doctors told Anderson, are 10 percent. But when it comes to injuries, Anderson tends to defy the odds.

Last year was Anderson's healthiest season since 2009. He went 10-9, made 31 starts and pitched 180 1/3 innings. Before that, his career was one big medical file: a fractured foot, fractured finger, Tommy John surgery and the previous back operation.

A free agent during the past offseason, Anderson turned down multiple-year deals elsewhere and accepted a one-year, $15.8 million qualifying offer from the Dodgers, saying he would bet on himself producing a second healthy season and cash in even bigger next offseason.

"Can't feel sorry for myself," he said. "I made the choice, I bet on myself and lost, but I hope I can make up for it. I told [Brandon McCarthy, elbow surgery], now it's a race between me, you and [Hyun-Jin Ryu, shoulder surgery]. I'd still bet on myself. I have more confidence in myself than anybody but my family. All this stuff I've had to deal with has made me a better player and a better person."
Anderson said the first time he injured the back, doctors repaired the disk and shaved surrounding bone to provide more space. As a result, the pain this time wasn't as sharp as the pain the first time. But because of the scar tissue that had to be cleared out this time, he was more uncomfortable after the surgery.

"The last time I was an outpatient and walked out, this time I was on my back for the most miserable 24 hours," Anderson said. "It was excruciating."

On the bright side, Anderson said last time he was experiencing weakness in his leg and toes that he doesn't have now. That said, the Dodgers have issued a very conservative prognosis of three to five months.

"They're going to take it slow with the second one, because a third one would mean fusion and it could be career ending," Anderson said. "A significant portion of the disk is gone, but the doctor said it's solid. The first time this happened, I was upset, I felt I could have done more to prevent it. This time, I'm not as upset, I did the work, it's not like I skipped out on it. Everything looked good and it just kind of happened. The doctor said this isn't an exact science."

Anderson was greeted by typical clubhouse gallows humor.

"[Clayton Kershaw] said, 'I don't know about your back, but I need a catch buddy,' " Anderson said. "At least he's got his priorities. I'm just a catch dummy."
Anderson said doctors believe he is starting his rehab from a better baseline than last time. He said he's confident he will make it back this year to help his club. And he's optimistic his future will be healthier than his past.

"Maybe I'll be Benjamin Button," he said of the Brad Pitt movie character that ages in reverse. "I'll get all of this out of the way at 28 and start feeling younger."

    we all make mistakes
    and there's a reason
humility, accountability (as blazer alluded) and education
    lessons to be learned
except those times we don't, and (as einstein said) we're then doomed to repeat
those who don't learn from their mistakes are flawed individuals

lol, just realized i quoted blazer and einstein in the same post
    who woulda thunk?
must be that fine line between genius and insanity :retard:
