    and they recalled Austin Barnes

Cutting bait when you need to is necessary for a successful team. Glad they did it, and look forward to seeing if Barnes can bring something to the catching spot.

Dodgers Designate Carl Crawford For Assignment

By Connor Byrne | June 5, 2016 at 11:46am CDT

The Dodgers have designated outfielder Carl Crawford for assignment and recalled catcher/infielder Austin Barnes from Triple-A Oklahoma City to take his roster spot, per a team announcement.

Designating Crawford could bring about a significant financial hit for the Dodgers, who will likely have to pay the remaining $35MM on his contract, according to Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times (on Twitter). Crawford, who’s signed through next season, “got caught in the numbers game,” Dodgers vice president of baseball operations Josh Byrnes told MLB Network Radio (Twitter link). The Dodgers do have a slew of non-Crawford outfield options in Joc Pederson, Trayce Thompson, Scott Van Slyke,Howie Kendrick and Enrique Hernandez, but this is nonetheless quite a fall from grace for such a high-profile player.

As a quality hitter who played excellent defense and was a serious threat on the bases, Crawford was a star-caliber player with the Rays over the first several seasons of his career. The four-time All-Star’s success in Tampa Bay led the division-rival Red Sox to sign him to a seven-year, $142MM contract in 2010. Crawford played poorly in Boston during parts of two seasons, though, and the Red Sox then shipped to the Dodgers in 2012 as part of a salary-dumping trade.

The injury-prone Crawford appeared in 310 games with Los Angeles prior to today, and his play dropped off precipitously early this season. In 30 games and 87 plate appearances, he has compiled a negative fWAR largely impacted by a weak .185/.230/.235 batting line. To Crawford’s credit, he was solid with the Dodgers from 2013-15, slashing .286/.328/.414 with 18 home runs and 48 steals in 1,032 trips to the plate, but LA has now deemed the soon-to-be 35-year-old expendable.

Crawford has batted .290/.330/.435 with 136 homers and 480 steals in his career.

Can't think of anyone else in a situation worthy of a complete DFA, other than maybe Hatcher if he keeps sucking? Fien, but that's not anything big haha. I mean, the offense sucks but I can't see another situation of where it's very clear that a current player needs to go cause theres someone in the minors better suited for the roster.

Dodgers probably can't make any big moves to help the offense but they can help around the fringes. Like here.

Hatcher is on DFA watch himself, but as long as the stuff keeps playing up they'll give him chances.

Plus, he's probably ahead of Fien at the moment (unless Fien really is gonna throw 95 with a nasty slider all season lol) and I don't see the Dodgers AAA team have 2-3 guys who are guaranteed better then Hatcher at the moment, as bad as he's been. Montas will force them into a move though

Or maybe the dunce (Theo) who signed him to that contract will take him back?

Sadly the Giant scenario is probably more plausible.
