Murphy likely to be ready for the post season, but not a guarantee. They are saying he made some big strides in his recovery after I guess it looked like he was going to miss the rest of the season. Didn't know it was that serious.

    wow
    didn't know that either
that would be a huge loss for them, especially with ramos already out for sure
also heard some rumblings about harper having a thumb sprain, and see he hasn't played the past three days...

Arrieta, Montero not keen on Cubs' September spring training
Mark Gonzales | Chicago Tribune — 6 hours ago

With the home field advantage for the National League playoffs already wrapped up, Jake Arrieta and Miguel Montero don’t seem keen on the Chicago Cubs' current plan of treating the last week of the regular season like spring training games.

“It felt like a spring training game from the get-go,” Arrieta said after allowing seven runs and 10 hits — both season-highs — in five innings Wednesday night as the Cubs fell to the Pittsburgh Pirates 8-4.

    “I wasn’t crisp. I didn’t have much working.”

Arrieta took note of the fact that Montero was pulled before the bottom of the fifth in place of rookie catcher Willson Contreras. The Pirates went on to score three runs after two outs — as Arrieta allowed three consecutive doubles and a single to cap his miserable performance.

But Arrieta likes to stick to a routine regardless of the Cubs’ status, and he made that clear.

“I feel fine,” Arrieta, who finished the regular season with an 18-8 record and 3.10 ERA in 197 1/3 innings. “The feeling of the game, from the first pitch, wasn’t there. Switching catchers felt like we were trying to do a little too much instead of win a ballgame. But I didn’t throw well.”

Manager Joe Maddon and Montero thought Arrieta threw well but were perplexed by the results.

"It was kind of weird,” Maddon said. “I thought he had a great delivery, was throwing strikes and his stuff looked good. But he looked out of sorts, if that makes any sense.”

Arrieta admitted he was upset at some borderline pitches that were called balls in the first inning by umpire Chris Guccione and had words with him.

Montero, meanwhile, also wondered if Arrieta’s concentration wavered.

“He got upset in the first inning, and I don’t know if that took him away from throwing a good game. But I really thought he had good stuff going on.

“Other than that, I don’t know what happened. It felt like spring training. I do believe that. That’s not a good feeling for a pitcher or a player to go into a game knowing you’re going to play four innings or five innings or whatever it is, because this game is still important for all of the players.”

Montero was adamant that his mentality is to win despite the fact that Cubs secured a playoff berth nearly two weeks ago and that Maddon has used the subsequent time to rest his starters and employ his reserves to keep them sharp for the playoffs.

“It can be tough on players’ minds, so we have to find a point where we trick our mind, because if that’s the way we’re going to go the rest of the way, I guess we need to trick ourselves."

Montero took note of the fact that the Cubs used rookie Felix Pena instead of veteran Aroldis Chapman to secure a 6-4 win Tuesday night over the Pirates.

“I take it personal because I’m catching and want to win. It’s hard. I understand (Maddon’s) point and the organization’s point, and I respect it. I can only control what I can control.

“We have to trick our minds. We got to compete for whatever innings we’re going to play.”

Aside from Wednesday's rough outing, Arrieta described his season as "good" and believed he still has the potential to achieve a season similar to his 2015 season when he won the National League Cy Young Award.

"I don’t think you know how hard this game is unless you’ve play it," Arrieta said. "I feel I can have another season like that. People have done it before. Why can’t I do it? I can do it again. I appreciate it."

Top 80 pitchers according to Bleacher Report
    #31 Rich Hill
    #16 Kenta Meada
    #2 Clayton Kershaw
and they gave #1 to Max Scherzer

Now Scherzer has had a fine year and Kershaw missed 1/4 of the season so I wasn't going to bkitch so much but..
Being a stats guy I noticed that Kershaw was only given 27/30 in their category of "Control". WTF I think to myself how can that be? Two other pitchers were given 30/30 in Control and Clayton Muthafuckin Kershaw has 168 K's to 10 BB's. Clean your damned stat nerd glasses already.

Sufficiently irked, though I enjoyed the article overall, I looked back at those starters given the 30/30 perfect scores.
    Kyle Hendricks has 166 K's but he has a whopping 43 BB's!!! WTF??? Kyle's BB/9 is 2.1 while Clayton's is 0.6 and Kyle gets a 30/30??
Rick Porcello of Bahston was also given a 30/30 score with 183 K's and 30 BB's. 30 BB's!!! 3x or 4x the BB's and two perfect scores?? Heck Porcello has hit 30% more guys than Clayton has walked.

How does one NOT rail at the idiots in the media?

Their lame intro "It's unfair to give a guy who's missed half the season a perfect score" in the Control category when they already marked him down to 14/20 for 'Workload' category??

Someone please explain what missing ANY # OF GAMES has to do with having the best command of any pitcher is decades. His 168/10 ratio is the best in 100 years and they ding him on Control for missing games?

Fortunately the majority of Bleacher Report commenters were saying the same thing.

It's Bleacher Report, I would not overthink it too much. Honestly, I don't think anyone deserves a perfect score for control/command. Unless Kershaw starts hitting his spots like Maddux did, that is the only way you can get a perfect score in my book. If he did that with his stuff, we'd be on no-hitter watch about every game.

What makes you think that we're not on watch every game?

    Seriously.
Any given night Clayton Kershaw is capable
Some nights it even seems inevitable

Damn, that's pretty awesome. What a way to go out in your last at-bat with a team. Have to love moments like that, regardless of what teams/players you like and dislike.

Yeah that was awesome. I hate the Cardinals but man, essentially choosing Holliday over Pujols worked out beautifully for them
