WTF are nickname jerseys? Also, who the hell is Kazmir?

Props to Seager, Kazmir, and Fields for not playing. And props to Justin for thinking they asked for his Twitter handle.

I was pulling my hair out the other night with Doc's bullpen moves, but after what he did last night, I now understand what the plan is. It was mentioned earlier, but it is obvious that he is attempting the Phil Jackson method of putting your guys out there in tough situations to see what they got. We are probably not going to be an .800 team the rest of the way and would bet more likely that we are kicking around .500-.600 as they will probably choose to rest guys like Morrow and Jansen in the pen and see what players like Fields, Stewart, Buehler, Cingrani, Watson, Ravin and Stripling have. Not to mention, when Kershaw comes back, that should push one of Maeda or Ryu to the pen and they will need some opportunities to acclimate. Font is another guy to keep an eye on. His high K rate in AAA could translate well to the pen. I'd be interested to see how that works down the stretch.

So a couple of things to keep an eye on this month:

    - As I mentioned above, the team could look to rest a lot of guys down the stretch. We lose sight of what is going on sometimes in the AL, but the Astros have been in a bit of a freefall since the deadline. Their FO didn't do anything and apparently the team is pissed. They're 3-7 in their last 10 and an incredible 9th inning comeback away from 2-8. They are a full 9 games back of the Dodgers and are dealing with injuries to a couple of stars.

    - For all the talk about the Nats, their starting pitching is still somewhat thin after an offseason involving a big trade. Aside from a huge 4-4 day yesterday with 2 bombs, Ryan Zimmerman has been considerably average since the start of June and his monster numbers are mostly reflective of an amazing first two months of the season.

    - The Central has gone from a "what the hell is going on?" to "WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON?!" We all new the Brewers were going to come back to earth, but man they have really struggled as of late. They were roughed up by the Cubs and Nats, but even worse was a 4 game sweep at the hands of the Pirates and losing a stretch of 3 out of 4 to the Phillies. Now coming off of a tough late loss to the Rays, they've lost 3 in a row to the Twins... With all that going on, the Cubs have done almost nothing to give themselves some breathing room. The Brewers are still only a game and a half back, but also the Cardinals are right there too after reeling off 5 straight wins. Those teams are going to really have to work over the next couple weeks as after a 3 game set in AZ, the Cubs have 24 straight against sub .500 teams and only 7 of those games (Pirates) are with a team that is actually in the hunt somewhat. 10 of their final 49 are against the Reds, so the schedule gods have been kind to the Cubs.

    - I would guess that the Dodgers are not done dealing with the pen. Watson and Cingrani have not looked particularly great and the Dodgers being heavily in on Britton when the deadline closed means they are probably still going to be looking around for an impact arm. Speaking of which, Britton has only pitched twice since the deadline after going 3 straight leading up to it. Here is a list by MLBTR with top trade candidates https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2017/08/top-25-august-trade-candidates-2.html Ntohing too special that would apply to us, but this FO has a tendency to get creative.

Urias improving physically and mentally after surgery
by Pedro Moura | Los Angeles Times — 14 hours ago

Julio Urias visited Chase Field to meet with Dodgers officials Wednesday. They planned to delineate how he would proceed in his recovery from surgery for the torn anterior capsule in his left shoulder.

Tuesday marked six weeks since Urias’ season-ending surgery, performed by Dr. Neal ElAttrache. In the days surrounding the operation, the Dodgers did not make Urias available to speak to reporters. Others spoke for him, including Scott Boras, his agent, and Andrew Friedman, the Dodgers’ president of baseball operations. Friedman cited his frustration and despair upon learning what awaited the top pitching prospect.

Speaking for the first time since the surgery, Urias said he had trouble processing the reality that his career would be set back so significantly.

“I had a lot of emotions,” Urias said through interpreter Jesus Quinonez. “You feel sadness. You feel angry. Everything goes to your head. You think about your career, everything you’ve done to get to that point.

“I tried to get out of that stage as fast as I could. Now I feel very motivated and ready for everything.”

Manager Dave Roberts said he sensed from conversation that Urias had recently adjusted his perspective.

“He had clarity,” Roberts said. “And, in recent weeks, he hadn’t really had that.”

Urias will turn 21 on Saturday. After debuting at 19 a year ago and succeeding, the precocious left-hander walked more men than he struck out in an early-season stint with the Dodgers. Three weeks after he was sent down to triple-A Oklahoma City, he tore the capsule amid an eight-strikeout start.

Pain precipitated more than a week of inaction, which prompted several tests, and, eventually, the diagnosis, considered one of the most severe a pitcher can receive. When major leaguers have had the surgery Urias underwent, they have often been unable to reclaim their peak form.

“I’m not scared,” Urias said of that possibility. “I’m thinking positively, 100%. I’m thinking about coming back and thinking I may be even better if I put in the work. I’m not worried about being the same player, coming back the same way. I’m just being positive and getting my work in.”

Urias said he was encouraged by ElAttrache’s cheery post-operation report, which stated that “everything was better than expected.” Unlike most similar tears, Urias’ lacked scar tissue in the area because it had torn in an acute fashion. Typically, overuse is at fault.

“He obviously can’t guarantee anything,” Urias said of ElAttrache. “That depends on my rehab and how much work I put in, but after a month and a couple days, I feel really good.”

Friedman has expressed hope Urias could pitch in 2018. Urias was unsure when he could return.

“When God wants me to,” he said, “and when I’m ready.”

Urias said he had received an enormous quantity of encouraging messages from fellow ballplayers. He particularly prized the note he received from Washington reliever Oliver Perez, who like him hails from Culiacan, Mexico.

“I appreciate the advice from everyone,” Urias said. “But sometimes when your countryman reaches out, it helps send the message even clearer.”

It's hard to read an article about Urias and not come away impressed. As good as the kid's arm is, I really think his best asset is between the ears.

Wait a minute, Phil Rogers said the Dodgers have done nothing to separate themselves from the pack... and now you're saying the Dodgers will use the final month and a half as a second spring-training and tune-up for the playoffs because they are so far ahead of everyone else?

    - Willson Contreras is out for potentially 6 weeks. This could be a huge impact to the Cubs as Contreras is viewed as one of the best catchers in the game. Al Avila handing his son and Justin Wilson to the Cubs is looking like some fortunate circumstances for the Cubs, but he will have to continue his otherworldly production to likely help save a team's season that could now be in trouble.

    - Kershaw is supposed to throw a bullpen today. Fingers crossed it goes well.

    - Jerry Blevins was reportedly ClaimBlocked after being put on waivers. That is not a good sign for us as it will be highly unlikely that anybody passes through waivers now that will make much of any impact.

    - Wild Card will be interesting. As I mentioned above, the Cubs have a weak schedule, but so do the Cards. The Rockies is somewhat interesting in that it is filled with bad teams, but against teams they historically do not play well even when bad(Braves, Padres and Giants), while AZ's is pretty tough.

It will be interesting to see how Arizona holds up over the next week, they have 3 games vs the Cubs then 4 games vs Houston.
