Koehler is a lottery ticket, nothing more. A benefit if he works out as a reliever, he comes with an extra year of control.

A perfectly fine risk to take though.

speculation is he'll earn about $6MM through arbitration
good deal, especially if honeycutt gets his hands on him (no child rape, no homo)

    from chad moriyama...
    • Koehler isn’t one of those signings that anybody should expect to come in and be an impact talent for the pen, but he is one of those “dumpster dives” the Dodgers like to do for their pen that could pay dividends later. The team is basically taking a chance on a talented arm that is playing up in relief, just hoping they can strike gold again. And on just a one-year deal (assuming the money isn’t unexpectedly high), it’ll be worth it to find out if they’re right.

nah man I'm still long on Clayton..(and he's earned his pay)

tell Doc and the nerdtrust not to overuse him in short series
and even when he's not the BEST in baseball
he's still better than anything on the open market 3 years out of four
    maybe 7 of 8

not too many Kershaw equivalents floating around here or there

Roberts praises young talent, but believes veterans are essential to team’s success
by Matt Borelli | Dodger Blue — 16 minutes ago

The Los Angeles Dodgers boast one of the Major’s best farm systems and have reaped the benefits in recent seasons, receiving contributions from the likes of back-to-back National League Rookie of the Year winners Corey Seager and Cody Bellinger.

In addition to Bellinger and Seager, the Dodgers have upcoming talent in Walker Buehler and Alex Verdugo that are ready to make an impact for the 2018 season. The club also features a plethora of players under the age of 30 who have already thrived at the big league-level in Austin Barnes, Yasmani Grandal, Clayton Kershaw, Joc Pederson, Chris Taylor and Alex Wood.

While Dodgers manager Dave Roberts is surprised at the recent success of young players around the league, he went on to praise the talent level and believes the sport is excelling.

“I am surprised at that too, but you look at these players, and around the league there’s countless players, 21 to 23, that are just so uber talented,” Roberts told reporters at the Winter Meetings.

“It’s fun to watch. I think that the game right now, the talent level is as high as I’ve ever seen it. There is a lot of coaching going on.

“Not to take anything away from coaches of other decades, but when you’re having a 20, 21-year-old, 22-year-old playing in the big leagues and that veteran player is no longer on your roster, as a backup player, those kind of backfilled now by young players.

“So the coaches are taking on roles that they love to teach and those type of roles, which they’re meant to do their job. But the talent level is fun to watch. The game’s in a great place.”

Roberts also believes that having some veterans in place are essential to a team’s success, referring to them as “glue guys.”

“I think there’s a little bit to that, but if you look at the teams that win every year, there’s a balance,” he added. Those 27- to 30-year-old players — and you look at our ball club, maybe even to 37. But you look at — even the Astros, you look at the guys that were some of the glue guys that they had were those type players.

“So you mix those young Correas and those other guys, the Springers with some other guys, and we had that same mix. A lot of good clubs have that, the Yankees, I mean, they’re all kind of like that. I think those clubs aren’t missing on those guys either.”

There was no short series overuse when Kershaw choked away that huge lead in the 2014 post season opener VS STL, so yeah, that excuse was burned a long time ago. Kershaw's choked nearly every way imaginable in the postseason, just reality. He's choked on regular rest and short rest..early in the post and now in the WS as well. Facts.

Given his back issues in recent seasons and the fact that he's missed months at a time, if and when he opts out he should be offered less on the AAV. I imagine there has to be a good deal of pressure on kids like Buehler and Urias when the ace of the team can't hold 3+ run leads when it matters most in the fall. At this point we're all basically hoping that Buehler will become Smoltz and that he'll carry Maddux ( Kershaw) across the finish line.

Clayton is a choke artist but his 7 wins a year in the regular season are important

You pretty much have to build an 85 win team as long as you have Kershaw. Friedman can do that in his sleep, especially with Seager and Bellinger for the next half decade at least

When he says “7 wins” he means “7 WAR”.

It’s ok to hate VRP for being confusing.

Nah, it just illustrates the traditional ( old) way of looking at things as opposed to the SABR (new) way, I think.
I actually get it now...he makes a good point, imo.

Dodgers acquired Matt Kemp, per Ken rosenthal, for Adrian Gonzalez, Scott Kazmir, Charlie Culberson, and Brandon McCarthy. I don’t know how to feel
