Rylan Bannon is scorching the ball at Rancho
by Brook Smith | Dodgers Nation — 1 hour ago

If you have never gotten the chance to visit a Class A game in Rancho, it’s quite the treat. The scoreboard is incredibly small and hard to read, the beer is usually sort of flat, and the in-game entertainment is sort of depressing. The real upside comes with the talent you get to see. And boy is the Dodgers farm stocked with talent. One guy, in particular, is catching everyone’s attention.
    TWEET_1.png
It’s fairly common for Major League pitchers to make their rehab starts at Class A ball. What’s not common is to have a minor leaguer take you deep. Bannon did just that against the Angels’ Garret Richards. Don’t look down on Richards too much though, as Bannon has made it a habit this year to take everyone deep. He currently is the Cal League home run leader with 19 on the season.

Bannon is also hitting 296 with a slugging percentage of 568. That slugging percentage would rank him in the top ten in the majors right now. Obviously, Class A is a far-cry from the likes of Major League caliber talent. But it’s hard to ignore what Bannon has accomplished in just 80 games.

It’s even more impressive when you realize that this is his first year at Class A. The Dodgers took Bannon in the eighth round of the 2017 draft out of Xavier. Bannon, a standout third baseman, slashed 325/439/618 with 14 home runs in his final year at Xavier. Even more impressive than that? His defense. His college years were filled with highlight reel footage with the glove. The Dodgers have given him time at second base as well, despite profiling as a long-term third baseman.

    ANALYSIS

There is no way to know for sure which direction a prospect will go. Sometimes even the best prospects scouts have ever seen hit a wall and never rebound. Bannon does look to have quite a bit of promise though. The Dodgers 28th ranked prospect is just 22 years old, and we could be seeing him very soon.

Will Smith just hit his 7th HR in hist last 12 games. Since coming off the DL in early June, the dude has been absolutely crushing it.
The big names that were a bit further away in the system have not necessarily had great years, but there has been a solid group of breakout candidates from the second and third tiers. Smith was one of the top catching prospects in the game and had first division potential, but it was due to defense and contact skills, a lack of power he had not shown until this season was his largest drawback.

    DODGERS MINOR LEAGUE REPORT
Yusniel Diaz has four hits in Tulsa 10-5 win
by Craig Minami | True Blue LA — 3 hours ago
    [IMG]
Four of the six affiliates won on Sunday with Rancho Cucamonga extending their winning streak to 13 games, AZL Dodgers took their winning streak to seven games and Tulsa now having a five game winning streak.

    PLAYER OF THE DAY
Yusniel Diaz went 4-for-5 on Sunday including a home run. This past week has been a good one for Diaz, who is hitting .393/.469/.679 in July. Diaz and fellow Tulsa teammate catcher Keibert Ruiz were named as representatives of the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 2018 Futures Game. Both will be on the World team. That game is scheduled for Sunday July 15th at Nationals Park in Washington DC.

    TRIPLE-A OKLAHOMA CITY
The Dodgers lost their fourth out of their last five games on Sunday when they lost 18-8 to the Round Rock Express (Rangers). The Dodgers led 4-0 and 5-3 before the Express scored 13 runs over three innings to take control of the game. Drew Hutchinson started for the Dodgers and he gave up five runs in four innings, Logan Ondrusek followed and he gave up four runs in his one inning of work. Madison Younginer pitched to five Express batters in sixth, all five got on base and scored. The Dodgers did get some highlights at the plate as every Dodger in the lineup had at least one hit. Andrew Toles went 3-for-5 with a home run. Henry Ramos also had three hits and a home run. Connor Joe hit two doubles and Edwin Rios went 2-for-5 with a double and two runs batted in. The Dodgers will be off until Thursday as they will be going on their All-Star break.

    DOUBLE-A TULSA
Errol Robinson hit a two-run homer that put the Drillers back on top and they went on to beat the Frisco RoughRiders (Rangers) 10-5 on Sunday. This win extended their winning streak to five games and they are now 12-4 in the second half of the season. Robinson’s fifth inning home run had answered the three runs the RoughRiders had just scored in the top of the inning that gave the RoughRiders a brief 3-2 lead. The Drillers would then score four runs in the sixth and two final runs in the eighth inning to give them the game. Several Drillers had big days at the plate. Will Smith hit his seventh home run in his last 12 games. Robinson would also have a two RBI single to go along with his two-run homer. Yusniel Diaz went 4-for-5 with a home run and three RBI. Luke Raley had three hits including two doubles. And DJ Peters went 2-for-4 with a triple. Justin DeFratus started and gave up three runs in seven innings pitched. With the win, DeFratus is now 3-3 with Tulsa this season.

    CLASS-A RANCH CUCAMONGA
The Quakes were behind 5-0 after four innings and it looked like their winning streak was over. But then they scored four runs in the fifth and single runs in the eighth and ninth innings and held on at the end for a 6-5 win over the San Jose Giants. The win made it thirteen in a row and also a five-game sweep at San Jose. Each win adds to their new franchise consecutive wins record. Parker Curry started and he pitched four innings and was responsible for five runs (three earned) and eight hits allowed. The Quakes bullpen took over and they pitched five scoreless innings. Marshall Kasowski pitched the final two innings and he got the win. Kasowski struck out two and allowed one hit. The last four runs the Quakes scored were result of a home run. Cristian Santana hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning to make it a one-run game. Omar Estevez, who had hit a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning, homered in the eighth inning to tie the game. Hamlet Marte led off the ninth inning with a solo homer to give the Quakes their first lead of the day. And then the Quakes held on as Saige Jenco caught a fly ball with the tying run in scoring position in the bottom of the ninth to end the game.

    CLASS-A GREAT LAKES
The Loons trailed by three runs before coming back to beat the Dayton Dragons (Reds) 7-5 on Sunday. Tied 5-5 in the seventh inning, Eric Petersen singled in the tie-breaking run and then Josh McClain hit a sacrifice fly to give the Loons their two-run lead. In the ninth inning, the Dragons had the tying runs in scoring position with two out. Lorenzo Cedrola was brought in and he recorded a strikeout to get his first save as a Loon. 2018 fifth round pick Devin Mann had his best game at the plate as a professional. Mann, a 21-year old second baseman, went 4-for-5 and had two extra-base hits including his first home run as a professional.

    ROOKIE-PIONEER
The Raptors lost 10-5 to the Grand Junction Rockies to end their series dropping two straight games. The Rockies had a 7-0 lead after three innings and the Raptors had to battle just to get back in this game. The Raptors best chance was after scoring three runs in the eighth, Chris Roller came up as the tying run but he flew out to center to end the threat. The Rockies then scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth to put the game out of reach. Miguel Vargas, who had four multi-hit games in his first week with the Raptors, went 0-for-4 on Sunday. The 18-year old Cuban-born infielder is now hitting .500, with 12 hits in 24 at bats with Ogden.

    ROOKIE - ARIZONA LEAGUE
The AZL Dodgers won 10-3 over the AZL Angels. The win made it seven straight including going 6-0 so far in July. One name to look to perhaps move up this season is Rolando Lebron, a 20-year old outfielder from the Dominican Republic. Lebron had a big 2017 season in the Dominican Summer League hitting .343/.434/.490 in 53 games. Lebron is currently hitting .400/.486/.600 in 12 games in the Arizona League.

    DODGERS MINOR LEAGUE REPORT
    Quakes winning streak reaches 15
By Craig Minami | True Blue LA — 5 hours ago
    LOGAN.png
Limited schedule with three of the four full-season affiliates off on Tuesday plus a rainout in the Dominican Summer League. But the three teams that did play, Rancho Cucamonga, Ogden and AZL Dodgers all won. Rancho Cucamonga has now won 15 straight games and the AZL Dodgers have an eight-game winning streak.

    PLAYER OF THE DAY
Over the last two weeks, it has been difficult not to pick a different Quake as the player of the day because the team has been playing so well. And that did not change on Tuesday night, with several good performances, it was hard to pick one but for this entry, it will be outfielder Logan Landon. The 25-year old outfielder was a triple short of a cycle on Tuesday night, going 3-for-4 with a two-run homer. So far in July, Landon has hit .394./487/.727 in 38 plate appearances.

    TRIPLE-A OKLAHOMA CITY
The Triple-A All-Star game will be played tomorrow at Huntington Park in Columbus, Ohio. Oklahoma City will return from their break on Thursday July 12th when they start a four-game series at the Round Rock Express (Rangers).

    DOUBLE-A TULSA
The Drillers were off on Tuesday. Starting tomorrow, they begin their series at the Northwest Arkansas Naturals (Royals).

    CLASS-A RANCHO CUCAMONGA
The Quakes jumped out to take a four-run lead and went on to win 6-1 over the Lancaster JetHawks (Rockies). The Quakes have now won 15 straight games. On the mound, Tony Gonsolin started and pitched five strong innings. He gave up a run and three hits. Gonsolin also had 11 strikeouts while walking two. The two relievers Jason Richman and Connor Strain, each pitched two scoreless innings for the Quakes. Both Logan Landon and Rylan Bannon fell one hit short of a cycle. Landon needed a triple and Bannon needed a home run. Landon did hit a two-run homer in the first inning to cap the Quakes four-run outburst. Also, Cody Thomas had two hits and Cristian Santana drove in a pair of runs.

    CLASS-A GREAT LAKES
The Loons were also off on Tuesday. They will go on the road to start their series on Wednesday against the Clinton LumberKings (Mariners).

    ROOKIE - PIONEER
The Raptors had leads of six and seven runs as they cruised to an 11-4 win against the Missoula Osprey (Diamondbacks). Ronny Brito had three hits and two runs batted in. Miguel Vargas went 2-for-4 to continue hitting .500 for the 2018 Raptors. Joel Inoa pitched 4⅔ innings in his start. Inoa gave up two runs (one earned) and five hits. Inoa also struck out five. Connor Mitchell 2⅓ innings, he gave up two unearned runs and he was awarded the win. Austin Drury finished the game for the Raptors and he pitched two scoreless innings.

    ROOKIE - ARIZONA LEAGUE
The AZL Dodgers had but one lead in this game but it was at the best time as they won 8-7 on a walk-off two-run homer against the AZL Brewers. Sauryn Lao hit his first home run for the AZL Dodgers and it was a game-winner. Tim Locastro and Donovan Solano continued their rehab assignments with they each had two hits for the AZL Dodgers. Braydon Fisher made his third appearance on the mound for the AZL Dodgers.

Dodgers #21 prospect Imani Abdullah retired today. That is unfortunate to say the least. Kid turned some heads his first year, but took a giant leap backwards this season. Velocity was gone and his mechanics were a mess. According to Dustin Nosler, he may have had some behind the scenes issues. Bummer, I had high hopes for the kid.

    DODGERS MINOR LEAGUE REPORT
Will Smith homers in fourth straight game
by David Hood | True Blue LA — 8 hours ago

A short night on the farm saw some of the lower affiliates win big, while the hottest prospect in the system stayed white hot.

    PLAYER OF THE DAY
Will Smith homered in his fourth straight game, and has five home runs in his last six. Smith’s home run was his 16th of the year, upping his season slash line to .296/.391/.614 at Tulsa. Smith also doubled and singled, coming up a triple shy of the cycle. He’s hitting .452 in his last ten games, is on a seven game hitting streak, with two or more hits in five of those games.

    TRIPLE-A OKLAHOMA CITY
Oklahoma City was off Wednesday. They return to action Thursday at Round Rock, with Daniel Corcino scheduled to start.

    DOUBLE-A TULSA
Will Smith came up short in his attempt to single-handedly defeat the Northwest Arkansas Naturals (Royals) 9-5. Smith drove in three runs and also scored a pair. Jacob Scavuzzo also had three hits, including a double and two runs driven in. Isaac Anderson did not fare well in his return to Double A, lasting just 3.1 innings while surrendering six runs. Michael Boyle struck out one in 2.1 innings of relief, allowing just one run to cross. Corey Copping was the only Driller pitcher to keep the Naturals off the board, striking out a pair in a scoreless ninth.

    CLASS-A RANCHO CUCAMONGA
The Quakes middle order was held hitless in a 6-2 defeat to the Lancaster JetHawks (Rockies). Cody Thomas, Cristian Santana, and Omar Estevez combined to go 0-13 in the 3rd-5th spots in the order. Gavin Lux and Connor Wong each had a pair of hits, with Wong going deep for the 13th time this season. Austin Hamilton took the loss by allowing three runs in four innings of work. Ryan Moseley also struggled, walking three and giving up three runs while recording just two outs. Zach Pop continued his dominance with another shutout inning in the ninth.

    CLASS-A GREAT LAKES
The Loons needed ten innings to record their first run, but it was still enough to defeat the Clinton LumberKings (Mariners) 1-0. Josh McLain singled in Luke Heyer in the tenth, McLain’s only hit of the game. Devin Mann also had a hit in three at bats. Edwin Uceta was stellar to start, throwing six shutout innings while striking out seven. Jasiel Alvino took the win with a scoreless ninth and tenth inning, striking out three.

    SHORT SEASON OGDEN
The Raptors put forth the most complete game of the night with an 11-0 clubbing of the Missoula Osprey (Diamondbacks). The offense was led by Drew Avans, who went four for five with two home runs and five runs driven in. Matt cogen and Ronny Brito each homered, while Chris Amaya went three for five from the leadoff spot. Jose Chacin earned the win after throwing five shutout innings, striking out four. Hunter Speer and Justin Hagenman each pitched a pair of scoreless innings in relief.

    ROOKIE LEVEL ARIZONA

Another good showing for Rancho, featuring a couple of the most prominent trade chips.

    Dustin May: 6 2/3 IP, 2H, 3R(2 earned), 1 BB and 12Ks.

    Gavin Lux: 2/4, 2B, HR, 2R

Of note for Tulsa in a big win:

    Mitchell White: 6 2/3 IP, 6H, 1R(unearned), 0BB and 6Ks.

    Keibert Ruiz: 3/4, 2HRs, 3R and a BB

Not only very young but he's still in AA. Unless Verdugo is traded not likely until 2019 in September. Cut down his strikeouts so far this year but the power numbers aren't there yet unlike a guy like DJ Peters. CKWG would have a better answer, lol.

The price is a big draw for sure. Due to it's intimacy there's not a bad seat in the house so those tickets are usually available. I just wish AAA/AA were closer so I could go to those teams. Back in the day when AAA was in Vegas it was very cool to go see the 51's play, didn't attend as many as I wanted broke back then lol. There was the time when I went years back when these girls were fawning over this guy playing 1st base calling him gorgeous etc. I leaned over to them and said he'll be in LA real soon. They were talking about Eric Karros and he was called up soon after.

There seem to be a few guys that are in-line for promotions and Diaz is probably one of them, but he would go to AAA before making the leap to MLB. He is probably at least a Sept call up candidate in 2019. He is also not some hero bat waiting in the wings, imo. He has MLB regular upside, but for now his ceiling is below star status since he doesn't provide much pop and he would probably play a position where power is needed/wanted(COF). He has shown a tendency to be rather streaky in the past, hopefully those days are behind him, but what has me most feeling "meh" about him is that he has been somewhat fragile. To me I think he is a great trade chip if they can use him as a centerpiece for a Machado deal.

I am starting to really hate the idea of moving May, especially for a rental. This dude is showing the trajectory of a front line starting pitcher with the potential to be a rotation leader. Big dudes that throw in the mid-90's AND fill the zone at his age are a rarity and I think he would be a guy that this club regrets moving. At this point, he is the only untouchable in our system even if he is a pitcher and you should trade all your pitching prospects.
