I talk to my chinese overlords in sing song. Nobody has ever complained.
I talk to my immigrant family members in broken english.
It is what they use.
It is what they understand.
The ultimate goal is not for you to have the same vocabulary as me.
The ultimate goal is communication.
I need to get the job done.
If I explain the situation using terms the other does not use on a regular basis I leave much open to interpretation.
Interpretation is always bad.

I have been accused of being 'racist' for doing this. Others have accused me of doing it to belittle them. This only happens when I do it with immigrants who don't know the vocab very well. I make things simple for them not because they are simple people but because they are not experienced with our culture and constantly end up in trouble due to the loss of nuance.
Eventually, those very people who thought I was fucking with them learned to love the fact that I spoke to them in their language.

Patronizing is a tricky word. Look at the quote in the story... "they patronize minorities stereotyped as lower status and less competent,”.
To patronize means to support. A patron needs nothing and so he can give freely.
When you speak to a person at their level you are giving them the support they may need in order to fully express their needs.
We used to be taught that coming down to another's level is the right way of approaching them.
The media tried to use the word patronize in the way they have been doing for years. Which is what the media does best, distort language so that the people need the media to explain things to them. That is confusion and chaos.

When you go to Taco Bell you are a patron.
You are not there to belittle Taco Bell.
You know Taco Bell is shitty food though.
And that the staff is probably going to be immigrant, minority, or otherwise undereducated working poor.
Even if the place is not named Tyrone Bell.
It is patronizing to not patronize them.
And if you patronize their establishment then you are a patron.
They are serving you.
That is why at many establishments where someone is serving you and that person is a male and happy will call you 'boss'.
You are not his boss.
But he will call you boss.
The same way in Mexico they would call you patron.
Even if you don't know a thing about agave.

I think this entire fight about who is more racist and patronizing is a bit condescending of the level of emotional intelligence of the American people.
No wait, on second thought it is perfectly apt.

That is exactly how our conversations go.
The only language that exists is inflection, tone, face, hand movements... all that and the desire to want to communicate can get you to one word shared by both people which then gets you to two then 4 then 16 then 72 and you can now communicate much better than you can with 90% of the people that speak your own language but don't know how to communicate.

That is such a fantastic show.

Its been so long since I've watched Deadwood that I never realized that how we communicate at work is a lot like how Al and Wu talk.

Wu was not picking up everything Al was saying but he got the big picture until Al fucked up in the way he said juice. He inadvertently caused a negative emotional reaction in Wu which now become his big picture. Everything else Al had said had been wiped from the front of Wu's mind.
As soon as Al was able to ease his concerns he was quickly back on board.

The funny thing about Wu is that it is how you say the first part of Go'on in Mandarin. Mandarins are the enemy of the Goons from Canton in the south.
And in Cantonese means 'song of the south' in a literal way more like sound of the Wu. Which simply means the sound made by the southern rebel warriors who fought the evil Mandarin bureaucrats of the northern Manchurian Mongols.
They lost and were forced to wear long hair and braids like a girl. A Goon would face instant death penalty if he cut his hair.
