Having an incredibly strong farm does not necessarily equate to guaranteed success. Prospects can fizzle out, get injured or just never reach their ceilings, but generally a system that is overloaded with talent finds a way to at least be competitive for a stretch. This brings me to the Padres... They have a chance to be a real force in the near future if they keep trending in the direction they are going. Not only is their farm just absolutely stacked in the really good talent department, but they also have more than a couple potentially elite guys. Paired with this, their FO has been doing some very interesting maneuvering in recent years in an attempt to pay down/payoff sizeable bad debt from when the owners purchased the team. That has them believing they will jump into the middle tier of the leagues spending bracket, instead of near the bottom rung. That could make for a dangerous pairing if they are able spend wisely(something Preller has not yet shown an ability to do) on the free agent market.

I am looking at the Padres kinda like many viewed the Royals before their run. A lot of intriguing young talent that is all nearing the big leagues at the same time and if it clicks, could make for a dangerous divisional foe for a few years. This is the team the Dodgers really need to keep their eyes on, if they get too complacent they could find themselves in a tough spot within the division. The FO should not be looking to merely win a bad division this year, but loading up for a potential long fight against a young up and comer... That is why you get a superstar like Harper now when it only costs you money. A player of this magnitude doesn't come along all the time and skipping that chance now when it only costs money, could mean trying to play catch up in a couple years where it is likely going to cost you the prospect capital to that has become so much more valuable to land an impact player of that magnitude(unless they magically get Trout). Going for these mediocre short term plugs is not the answer for a team with World Series aspirations. Get out there and land the big fucking fish.

Joc should go to Boston and be Trot Nixon.
    Nixon Career Slash vs RHP = .288 .376 .496 .872

World Series foes rarely make trades the following season. Some other teams you can probably scratch off...
All of the NL West, Cubs, Brewers, Cardinals, Nats and Astros based just off of competitors, plus the Braves, Reds, Mets, Yankees, Angels and arguably the Rangers based on overall team needs. That is more than half of the league that really isn't a fit or option at this point. There are not a whole lot of options and you could even argue that many of those remaining teams may not have a need either. One team that could make a whole lot of sense is the A's. He is a Bay area dude, so they could see it as a chance to re-sign him to a decent extension and he would make a good pairing in LF with Chad Pinder who was .120 OPS higher against LHP than RHP.

These owners are way too cheap for the Harper’s or the Villar’s of this league

Rather akin to the Carl Crawford FA years ago.

Do not put anything past a (rich white) old boys club like MLB owners

Maybe Friedman and Zaidi are showing that collectively they were much better than they are individually.

Dodgers have signed AJ Pollock according to Ken Rosenthal.

Nightengale is reporting the Dodgers are trying to pull off a couple of deals in the coming days, including JT Realmuto

Passan saying it is in the neighborhood of 5 years at 60M potentially... that on the surface seems like a good deal. Meh, still don't like it.

Dodger fan Derek Carr wants to fight Kellerman and Stephen A., but he should probably be angling for Kasten and Walter instead.

5 years? Even if they somehow still sneak out the back door with Harper..5 years for Pollock is ridiculous

    • Nightengale says the Dodgers talks with the Marlins about JT Realmuto are now "intensifying".
    • Bob is also reporting that the deal is guaranteed at 4yrs and about $50M. That 50M mark makes a big difference to the D'Backs. There will be opt-outs and escalators. Heyman saying 55M

Bowman reporting that the deal is 4 yrs at 50M... which just fuck this. Sign Harper to play to that age, not the fucking walking DL dude.

This news is just depressing. 5 years for a guy who can’t stay healthy. If this is the only signing, man....not sure what the whole game plan is for the club.

This has to be step one in a JT and Kluber move.
