Dodgers blocked by Angels on great idea for dying valley mall
by AJ Gonzalez | Dodgers Nation — 2 days ago

The Anaheim Angels seem to never get the memo that Anaheim is not in Los Angeles. Bill Shaikin wrote a wonderful article, and tweeted out the gist.

In short, the Dodgers were exploring building a new baseball field at a dying mall and helping revitalize the are in the valley. An unfortunate snag in the effort is that the owner of the Angels would block it.

“Guber and the Dodgers liked the Woodland Hills Project. [Westfield Corp CEO Peter] Lowy and Westfield liked it. The mayor of Los Angeles liked it. The president of the minor leagues liked it. Rob Manfred, the commissioner of Major League Baseball, liked it. There was nobody that did not like it, except for Arte Moreno.”
    — Dodger owner Peter Guber

Under baseball rules, as it says, LA, OC, Riverside, San Bernardino, and Ventura counties are shared by the Dodgers and Angels. So both teams have the power to block each other in a venture to expand.

STOP TRYING TO MAKE ANAHEIM LA
Arte Moreno could use a conversation with Regina George, who would tell him to stop trying to make Anaheim, ‘happen.’ The Angels blocked the Dodgers attempt at re-vitalizing a dying mall that just happens to be within the city of Los Angeles. The Angels were not okay with this, apparently thinking that Anaheim was as much a part of Los Angeles as, uh, well, Los Angeles. To be fair, the Dodgers would have likely blocked this idea had the Angels suggested it. This being the only excuse for the Angels is particularly lame for two reasons... 1) The Dodgers are the Los Angeles team, and play in Los Angeles, no matter what MLB or the Angels try to market and, 2) This was the Dodgers idea.

    ANGELS, GREEN WITH BLUE ENVY
This battle of supremacy for “LA’s team” just won’t go away, despite it’s preposterous nature. This field was going to be 55 miles away from Angels stadium. Arte Moreno can do whatever he wants, but something like this is sad. The residents of San Fernando could have greatly benefited from this idea. Mike Trout is the best player in MLB, and the Angels have locked him up for good, but one player does not a team make. Until there’s a new Angels owner, Dodgers will have to take comfort in knowing that the Dodgers are Los Angeles’s team.

I guess maybe it's me, but if you're saying all that shit about good (us)/bad (them) teams, and the next paragraph write that, tbh, we would have done the same thing to them, aren't you saying absolutely nothing at all about the Angels?
Other than, of course, both teams are equally douches ?

If I was Moreno I would block it too.
Besides its in the wrong valley.
Way more Dodgers fans in the SGV.
And SGV is halfway between LA and OC.
Which means one of our fucked up Westfield malls can be turned into the minor league home of both the Dodgers and Angels.
And closer to the poor people with less options that would support minor league teams.
San Fernando is still just Hollywood's suburbs and that is where that valleys focus is at.
Dodgers need to show some love to their heartland, the SGV and the IE.
From the 2 fwy in the west to the 15 fwy in the east and from Whittier Blvd in the south to the San Gabriel mts is the north.

I could understand if they blocked gateway cities like Long Beach or somewhere in OC, but way out in the valley?
    Strange.
Moreno just likes pretending he's relevant.

There was more than a little talk of The Angels moving to Long Beach........and then there wasn't.

Whether this was true or if they needed to put a little scare into the the Anaheim City Council to help them negotiate we'll never know but if GuGG's (rightfully) killed the Long Beach part then payback's a bitch!

The Dodgers cant block the Angels from moving to Long Beach or anywhere else in LA, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino or Ventura counties.

WTF is wrong with this picture?

The Dodgers can't block another MLB team from moving into an LA suburb but The Angels can block a MiLB team offiliated with the Dodgers from relocating to one?

So, maybe the Dodgers can't block Arte from being the LA/LB Angels of Anaheim "officially" but did it "effectively" in some other way? Sounds like some more Baseball"Good ol' boy" unwritten owners shit has gone off the rails.

The Dodgers and Angels are the American and National League representatives of an identical territory that spans the area I previously mentioned. The Dodgers could play in Tustin if they wanted and the Angels could play next to Staples Center. They share the same exact territory and can play anywhere within it.

This deal Arte nixed had to do with the minor leagues which is apparently different.

According to Stubhub sales and other studies, Seal Beach is the last city that carries a small Angels majority. Everything north west of that is Dodgers all the way.

Moving to Long Beach may not be a big deal to those who live in Anaheim, Los Alamitos, Cypress, etc., but folks in Newport, Yorba Linda, Laguna, Mission Viejo, Irvine, and other parts of deep-Orange County will not like it.

The Angels should and will stay exactly where they are. While I dont think the LA name is a big deal, they are an Orange County brand with no real reach beyond that.

I get it now, thanks for the insight into the territory stuff but the fact is, it was an unnecessary and cKuntish move on Arte's part so there's gotta be a real reason we're not hearing.

I used to hang out at that mall when I was a teenager.

Total cunt move. Not like anyone from the valley is gonna drive to Anahiem to see minor league baseball, so a team there is no threat.

The location is the big thing. SFV is on the north side of LA, an eternity away from Anaheim.

This is the equivalent of the Dodgers blocking the Angels from setting up a minor league stadium in Irvine - if the Dodgers did that they’d be equally douchy.

If the Angels were still a Disney thing and Disney wanted the team near its entertainment headquarters in Burbank that might have been possible.
