I don't know, I could be in the extreme minority on this, but I prefer to have a strong shot of a championship for multiple seasons over the long run, rather than sell-out for a chance at a one-and-done type of scenario and have to live with the putridness that is the Gnats right now. Yeah, I know they won three, but two of them were really lucky so I'd argue that only one really should have happened. And you could shoot your load for the one and there's no guarantee it even happens, and then you're wallowing in mediocrity. Not saying I'm content with just division titles, but keep putting this team in the postseason and at some point it's gotta happen. Even despite Roberts (I hope).

Wow...everyone is entitled to their opinion.
But in my world, based on true history, that "elite" ceiling is nothing but a false positive. Aren't you tired of the bridesmaid role we've been finding every which way to carry on with? Shit's old.
Maybe it's just me...but winning the NLW every year, and going/ not going to the WS and losing...that and $2.50 gets you a cup of coffee. ( It used to be 10¢).
    Nothing more.
And I've read and been told fairly often about those "lucky" titles the SFags got...and it always sounds the same...
    like sour grapes.
If it's OK to win the division over and over again, and not get the ring ultimately, then it sure is OK to get lucky in 2/3 championships any day.
I'll take 3 WS wins, however "tainted" they may be, every damn time.

As would I, and I don't agree with their strategy this offseason (they should've added a lot more to the BP than Kelly, even if it put them over the tax limit, as that was clearly the team's weak link). But using Harper as an example - Had they signed him for $425M or whatever he got, we would've been in a situation where we'd need to win it in the next couple years to justify the contract. I believe he'll regress quickly after that and the contract will loom heavily. So maybe that would've put us over the top, or maybe it doesn't and we're financially limited for the next decade. That's one decision that I'd agree on with the front office. They maintained the flexibility to stay competitive beyond the next couple of seasons.

I'd love to see them shell out for Kimbrell now, especially since we're in a position that we likely won't need him to be at his best for a few months.

I would trade 5 losing seasons for 3 championships any day, especially when our drought has reached 3 decades.

Hell, I just want one for once. I'd be totally okay with being mediocre had we won it all two years ago.

should have won it all in 2017
the front office has done well acquiring rentals; darvish who seemed like a wise choice at the time, and mehchado
they also seem to find guys out of nowhere; taylor and morrow (2017) and muncy last year
but wtf have they done to improve the team to get it over the top?
i (reluctantly) accept not wanting to invest in harper...
but if you're going to play it tight, why the fuck would you waste money on a scrub like pollock?
if they were trying to placate fans, they failed... miserably
would have been better had they spent nothing than sign that ckunt
yeah and shocker than he's on the dl, er, il
this team is going nowhere with kenley the self-serving bkitch as closer

    Craig Kimbrel says hi.

    arrieta...
    • "We're one of the best teams in baseball. We're rolling and we feel good about where we're at. I think we just showed the rest of baseball that we're one of the best teams and we deserve to be in that category. We showed it in Chicago and now getting the first two against one of the best teams in baseball (Milwaukee), one of the best offenses in baseball, speaks volumes about the group we have."
so splitting a series against the cubs is showing it?

    Cingrani.......ugh

    From the LAT......

Roberts said left-hander Tony Cingrani suffered a setback with his left shoulder during a rehab outing for triple-A Oklahoma City on Friday. Cingrani needed eight pitches to record three outs, but Roberts said he emerged with discomfort. He said Cingrani, who has been on the injured list all season with a left shoulder impingement, was to be reexamined. …

It's becoming clearer by the day that they will need someone of impact from each side, can't rely on Maeda and Urias to be the saviors, though I would trust Urias more than Maeda to fill that role from his side. However, some of the starters are so fragile and with July 31st being the only trade deadline, they made need to over address this area in case Maeda/Urias wind up in the postseason rotation.

Will Smith being called up is the word on street. Austin Barnes probably to the IL. (hopefully pre cautionary) But I’m excited to see what Smith can do, he’s got postseason roster upside.

    Just as Barnes was hitting.
They never get hurt when they're sucking
Excited for Smith, although Ruiz is probably the real prize.

I have no doubt Urias will be lights out, but how often will he be allowed to pitch?

Yup that’s why I was like hopefully it’s pre cautionary as Barnes was getting hot again but Smith has potential to do even more than Barnes. And yeah Ruiz is probably the future but maybe Smith lights it up here and ups his trade value even more. Who knows what’s gonna happen with the catching situation the rest of the season.

I really hate the Pollock and Kelley signings. $75 million dollars less to work with, and for players we don't need. I mean, Joc/Kike in LF, Verdugo in CF, and Bellinger in RF is the perfect outfield. Offensively and defensively.

It'd be nice to address 2B and C, preferably with RH bats. For catcher, maybe Barnes gets healthy and puts together a decent offensive season. Maybe Will Smith impresses.

2B is just a hole unless they commit to Max there or Lux comes on the scene.

Old friend Howie Kendrick, who has always been able to make contact but not walk too often, is putting up .303/.350/.549/7 HR/129 wRC+ 16.2 K%
Probably isn't a very good defensive player anymore, though. Doubt he can play 2B.

Kurt Suzuki is OPSing close to .800 but I have no idea how his defense is.

Nothing is more important, though, than addressing the bullpen. The other problems are nothing compared to that.

    RIP Bill Buckner

    http://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/26832836/bill-buckner-dies-69-battling-dementia

Unfortunately the clueless, classless fucks of Boston took years to "forgive" him of his error in the World Series. He probably shouldn't have been in the game at that point. A defensive replacement should have been playing 1B.

Overlooked because of that error is a 22 yr career and over 2,700 hits.

A serious ankle injury robbed him of the speed he had early in his career. He was also an all-state football football at Napa High.

ESPN ticker (was watching a bit of the Nationals/Marlins game) read "Bill Buckner dead at 69. Committed fatal error in 1986 World Series"
Seriously? THAT's what you put for a player of his caliber who just DIED?

Also, Boston only "forgave" him AFTER they won in 2004. Scumbags.
