We cannot predict the future. All we can do is look at our record and roster against theirs, as well as our most recent track record against them head to head.
I was certain that Arizona would give us trouble in the 2017 division series, especially with Robbie Ray, J.D. Martinez, etc. And we swept them.

We lost 16 out of 17 games at one point couple years ago. Baseball just sucks. Maybe more for us than other teams. But we will see. I think if we are healthy and firing on all cylinders, none of these NL West teams have a chance in a 7 game series.

Really this all sounds pretty unconvincing from a guy who pronounces players as garbage and trash, and now some of them are the biggest assets we have, tbh.
And whatever skills and talent we do have, Roberts will find a way to dilute and misuse it...eventually.
And sure, you can't predict the future, but many times in the past, I have written that we will not win with Roberts as manager. So far, I've been correct. Not that being right is important really, not at all, we should all learn, but for a fan who wants to see the " best team in baseball" finally win, it's a fucking bad joke. I'm not laughing anymore.
I sincerely hope I'm wrong.

 

And to answer your initial question, which I forgot to...no they weren't playing their hearts out. They didn't have a sense of their worth yet, and they do now. It has taken this long to realize that against us, and that's s why they are outplaying us.

 

This FO has to realize at some point the Roberts is not some kind of tactical genius, especially with handling the pitching staff. The FO has to essentially provide Roberts with an idiot proof roster. When it comes to the offense, I think we’re pretty close.

The pitching on the other hand....not sure why they are failing on that front....repeatedly.

How much pull does the pitching and/or bullpen coaches have on making pitching related decisions in-game?

I am on your team, Zoo. While I do believe individuals like Kike versus right-handed pitching are garbage, Barnes is just garbage in general, and the idea that Kenley Jansen is supposed to close games in the world series is a garbage concept, I'm still trying to see the bigger picture here. They can't win a hundred and sixty-two games and play flawlessly all season as a team.

We can isolate some specific concerns, but looking sloppy for periods of time as a team is inevitable. It is for every team.

Barnes is probably the only regular on the team who is simply not capable of doing anything. He is so incredibly weak and incompetent.

Turner is still really good and should put up close to a 5 WAR this season. But he is far from the most trusted crunch time hitter he has been the past few seasons.

 

I'm so glad Kenley did not make the All Star team like Dodger radio hosts suggested he should be. He isnt even a top 30 reliever in my opinion.

 

Replace the names Kike, Taylor (granted, CT3 has been pretty good), Rios, Beaty, Barnes, and Stripling with Seager, Freese, Pollock, Smith, Lux, and Hill...big difference.

Just a demoralizing week though.
