It is pretty remarkable how whenever these trades happen it is almost ALWAYS "Team x was asking for Top Prospects 1,2 and 3, plus 3 lesser prospects from the Dodgers" and those lesser prospects are always some very high upside (though deep floor) 18 or 19 year old's enjoying solid seasons. Then you see the return the other team got and it is a joke of "well this guy has elite abilities, but he has never done anything with them and the other guys are probably MiLB lifers". The Dodgers development staff have shown an amazing skill set to bring out the best in players to a point where our top 30 is loaded front to back with MLB talent and a 30-50 with MLB upside as well. Shit, Cody Thomas just moved INTO our Top 30 and he has MLB regular upside. Most orgs when you get out of their top 7 you are looking at middle relievers, maybe spot starters or quad A guys. Teams need to stop focusing in on our tippy top prospects that will never be dealt for a rental or reliever and look more down the totem pole. When teams have done that in years past, the FO has shown a willingness to make the moves and the acquiring team has almost always seen success after the trade.

    Twins (Dozier)- Smeltzer
    Pirates (Watson) - Cruz
O's (Machado) - Kremer(plus basically loaded up their top 30 by taking lesser known's)
    Astros (Fields) - *sigh* Alvarez

So 10 days from today, I am going to be in Thailand and if the resort I am staying at's internet connection is anything close to the speeds and reliability of their website, I will be a no show during the trade deadline. Some things to watch for in the weeks ahead and what we know so far:

    What we know:
    • The Dodgers are said to be looking for 2 upper-echelon relievers to add to their bullpen
    • The club has also been said to be kicking the tires on Matthew Boyd of the Tigers
    • It seems that the team would like to add two lefties to the pen after the drop off's from Alexander and Ferguson, plus the Cingrani injury.
    • The lineup is loaded with the returns tonight of Seager, Freese and Pollock. The FO has said that they are in a position to only go "big game hunting" from here on out.
    What to watch for:
    • It is not understood whether the team is looking at 3 BP arms or 2. Are they looking for 2 LHP's and a top tier RHP? Just 2 top tier LHP's? Mix and match? We shall see, but pretty much the certain's in the pen right now are Jansen, Baez, Kelly and Urias. If the recent Kelly is the new normal Kelly, it could ease the deadline from "WE NEED ARMZ" to "we need a couple of solid lefties"
    • Speaking of pen arms, the Dodgers farm is not exactly loaded with intriguing relievers as of right now. Marshall Kasowski was having a good year until spending the past month on the DL. After a dominating start to his season across both HiA and AA, Jordan Sheffield has been getting knocked around his last few appearances while dealing with some serious command issues. Josh Sborz went on the IL after a very impressive first inning at the big league level, before getting rocked in the second. His back was said to have tightened up yet he kept trying to throw. He got off the DL a couple weeks ago and has been pretty impressive since his return, he is more MR right now and not seen as impactful. The rest of the arms that the club will have to look at if the preference is filling within is Gonsolin, May, Santana and White. The latter two have the stuff to be very intriguing relievers, but they have struggled this year in starting roles in AAA. It is getting late if the club wishes to transition either one. Gonsolin is back on the DL again so his chances at impacting the big league roster are slipping. May will likely stay in a starter role until September as the team tries to build up his innings, but his stuff would certainly play if he could handle the relief role.
    • Watch Julio Urias. This is going to be a big one as the belief early in the season was that he would eventually transition back to starter as the season went on. The club has been using him in 3 inning stints over the last month where he has been absolutely dominant. The club's interest in Boyd could signal that they prefer to keep Urias in a pen role where he could potentially be a lock down multi-inning reliever ala Josh Hader from a year ago. He is at 51 innings and there was some belief that he would be capped around 100-120. His ultimate landing spot could depend greatly on how the deadline goes, though I would not hate to see a playoff rotation of Ryu, Buehler, Kershaw, Urias.
    • As was said above, the club is said to only be "big game hunting" outside of the pen in all likelihood. Muncy's versatility could allow for the team to go after an impact bat at 1B or 2B if they feel Joc can't handle the duties, but a Joc/Freese duo with a hopefully healthy Pollock back in the OF could be formidable. Catcher on the surface is the only major weakness and there does not seem to be an answer outside of the org. I would not expect a position player addition unless someone gets hurt or someone falls flat on their face.
    • Speaking of catchers, Will Smith is back playing in AAA after an IL/DL stint. We have obviously seen some impressive AB's from the kid at the big league level, but the presence of Barnes and Martin make bringing him up tricky. While neither of the 2 vets have been impressive, the club could decide to wait on bringing Smith up until September and hope to capitalize on teams not having time to adjust to the rookie. Be patient with this one as slow playing him may be the wisest move.
    • The other impact bat at the MiLB level is the well known Gavin Lux. On the heels of another glowing report this morning from BP, Lux is potentially the big game bat the club will add to the roster. Lux is murdering the ball in AAA after his promotion and while the team could probably use him, it may be wise to let him get 200 AB's at the level. That would put him right in line for a September call up where he would probably get a reasonable shot to take 2B if Hernandez and Taylor are faltering, but would the club potentially be willing to go into October with 2 rookies in the starting lineup? Probably not likely.
So while we are all a bit frustrated by the production at catcher and with Pollock, it is probably not all that likely that the club addresses those positions. There is not really an intriguing front line starter or impact bat that the club could find useful. It looks like the bullpen should and will be the focus going into the deadline and depending on how that goes, they could come away with a frontline starter anyway.

Even if we won the 2017 WS, I remember being literally nauseous from all the home runs. Disgusting

Most HR's ever in a single WS. Most players to hit HR's ever in a single WS. Most extra inning HR's in a single game ever (postseason or regular). And the highest scoring WS game in 20 years.

Mostly it was Game 2 and Game 5 as the culprits, we lost both so I'm extra bitter, but they were shit shows no matter how it ended.

Would have been slightly more palatable had the Series ended differently.

Dave Roberts said the return of Seager, Pollock and Freese is like making a major trade acquisition.

    Every year.

i hate that reggie got away with it, but i blame the umpires (particularly brinkman and pulli) for blowing the call
there was also some debate that russell dropped the soft liner deliberately
had the umpires made either call munson doesn't score

    • The Mets have released outfielder Matt Kemp, according to the International League transactions page. He had been with the organization on a minors deal. Kemp, 34, only took 36 plate appearances in eight games with the Mets’ top affiliate. He turned in an unremarkable .235/.278/.324 slash there and obviously was not viewed as a candidate to ascend to the MLB roster. Before that, he struggled to a .200/.210/.283 batting line in 62 major-league plate appearances with the Reds. A broken rib limited Kemp earlier this season. That seems also to be the cause for his unavailability at Triple-A Syracuse. If he’s able to get back to health, it seems likely that some other organization will take a shot on a minors deal. Kemp did pop 21 long balls and carry a 122 wRC+ in over five hundred trips to the plate with the Dodgers in 2018. That said, the former star’s long-term outlook in the game is obviously in doubt.

    • The Angels have added a pair of players out of the break, acquiring lefty Adam McCreery and catcher Josh Thole from the Dodgers in exchange for cash considerations. The move will help bolster the Halos’ depth. It’ll also clear needed 40-man roster space for their cross-town rivals. The Dodgers activated outfielder A.J. Pollock today from the 60-day injured list. He’ll be joined by Corey Seager and David Freese in returning to the active roster. Acquired last November, McCreery had yet to appear at the MLB level with the Dodgers but did hold a 40-man spot. In 35 2/3 upper-minors innings this season, he carries a 4.04 ERA with 9.8 K/9 and 5.8 BB/9. The southpaw briefly cracked the majors last year with Atlanta but has yet to receive a full opportunity — due in no small part to the fact that he has not yet conquered persistent walk problems. The 30-year-old Thole was once a consistent presence in the majors, functioning mostly as a reserve backstop with the Mets and Blue Jays from 2009 through 2016. He hasn’t cracked the bigs since, however, and has mostly carried marginal offensive numbers at Triple-A that befit his lifetime .242/.313/.306 slash through 1,499 plate appearances at the game’s highest level.

Dave Roberts was the starting CFer when I went all-in on Dodger baseball as a youngster. Even as a RH batter I would try to emulate his drag bunts and headfirst slides into 1B. Shawn Green's open stance and Beltre's barehanded plays at 3B were also staples in practice.

    That said...

...I'm rooting as hard as I can for Roberts to lose his job. Sex scandal, luxury tax evasion, DUI...anything. That way we dont have to suffer a WS loss for it to happen.

Tired if his stupid soundbites and pulling our best pitchers out in the WS after 10 pitches.

Watching Zaidi finesse this deadline could be scary. Their farm is weak as shit, but their top 3 prospects have superstar ceilings. Not as loaded as the system that he last inherited, but a good enough starting point where he could build solid depth around those 3 just from moving their bullpen pieces. They fucked up this offseason, but they could legit look towards 2021 where they could be right back into the playoff picture if he plays his cards right these next couple of weeks.

I was never that enamored with Roberts the player. He definitely overachieved, but IMO he was just an average player. If not for one stolen base, no one would remember him. Shows you how fucked up it is that one play can define your legacy.

Meanwhile Bill Buckner who arguably had a hall of fame career will forever be remembered for one misplay.

Labels can certainly harm a legacy. Albert Belle, as crazy as he was, for a 5-6 year span he was about as good as it gets at the plate. Nearly 400 career HRs and like a .950 career OPS. No matter..he was mean to reporters. Lol Trash.

You're right, Belle was an absolute beast. He was "that" guy you didn't want to face with the game on the line.
