Been a few articles out there talking about some lefty, Victor Gonzalez, who is opening some eyes about a possible bullpen stint with us. He’s 23, left handed, mid 90s fastball with two other pitches, and has had a great year. Was exclusively a starter and then recently moved to bullpen where he’s striking out lots of guys and doing great. Friedman mentioned him as a bullpen candidate. Something to keep an eye on. However, I’m still unsure how many spots they’ll actually open up for guys. With hill and Gyorko we’ll need 2 spots on the 40 man and so I wonder if they’d really open 2 more for Gonzalez/Lux

I think he gets a realistic shot at the roster. LHP options out of the pen are shit right now outside of Urias. He gave up a run in his last outing, but is still putting up some good numbers. Don't think finding a roster spot would be too hard with Chargois, Garcia, Negron, White and Schultz all taking up spots. They could also activate guys like Yadier Alvarez and Ruiz, then put them on the 60 Day.

    • Dennis Santana has finally been moved to the pen. Results are somewhat mixed as he had two good outings before a rough one last night against a Reno team that is really beating up the club the last couple of days. Most reports on Santana are that he would be a force to be reckoned with out of the pen as his sinker was once graded as 70/75 pitch and a 60 slider. Everything seems to have dropped off since he got hurt last year, so he may no longer be the closer type guy he was before, but could still be useful.
    • Gavin Lux at worse will be up with the club in a learning role ala Will Smith last season(so not on 40 man). There is some worry amongst club officials that they didn't give him enough time to get ready for 2B this season. Him suddenly playing 2B more was upon HIS request, so there is some presumption that there was no plan for him to be up this year. Some recent remarks on him from scouts are that he is now a legit 5 tool player with a 60 bat and 60 power. One thing that was mentioned is that Lux spending so much time at the SS position when the need at 2B was much greater, is it could be indicative that the club no longer views Corey Seager as a long term option at SS. With Turner getting to older, they could be looking at moving Turner to 1B and Seager to 3B to reduce wear and tear, while still having a great defensive left side. I would say put away the pitchforks for right now though, as the Dodgers FO is likely saying these things about not bring Lux up to skirt any sort of grievances over service time manipulation. They doing the old "he has things to work on" bit is not worth getting angry over, unless it is September 10th and he's not on the 40 man.
    • Keith Law said to pump the brakes big time on DJ Peters and his recent results back that notion up. Peters has been getting absolutely worked the past 10 games since he last hit a home run. He has begun to K a ton again and teams may be learning how to attack him. Before that really came to light, Law said that Peters was taking advantage of AAA pitchers that are trying to work around the juiced ball. His good eye was forcing pitchers to get behind while trying to make the new guy chase and then he'd punish them for get me over strikes. He is still walking a lot, but he may not be the superstar I was hoping he had transformed into.
    • Jeter Downs, while having a good year, hasn't exactly blown the door down and the feeling is that he is more of a super super utility guy like Hernandez where he will be able to play a bunch of positions, can give you a whole bunch of AB's, but is not someone you want to rely on every night at any one position.
    • Law also said that Cartaya and Smith have improved to such a level that he thinks Ruiz should be traded for a valuable piece in the offseason. I am guessing that it won't be for a reliever, but would not be shocked if the club kicks the tires on a starting pitcher in the offseason.

This is a good problem to have. Trading Ruiz for an impact player would make a lot of sense than keeping both him and Smith next year. Do you feel this season enhanced his trade value or not?

It definitely didn't help it, but I don't think it cratered it like some say. Fangraphs still maintains that he is a 60 FV prospect, which is a perennial all star level grading. The word has always been that Smith was going to get figured out, but these recent reports are incredibly positive and most think that he has done enough to be a very good catcher. I'm just worried as he has shown some inability to stay healthy for long stretches.

I’d think the logical move (and what I’d expect them to do) is go into next season with Smith as the starter and Barnes as the backup, with Ruiz repeating at AAA. IMO there’s no way a catcher putting up a .304 wOBA in AA at 20 years old is a bad sign, and SSS but he’s been hitting in AAA since the promotion too. Keep them both in the organization and let it play out. It’s too valuable a position to trade him for anything other than a star.

They can fix the bullpen in free agency.

If Gavin is everything scouts say he is, and if he's even a fraction of what he's doing in AAA, then he should be playing 2B for the Dodgers in 2 weeks.

Yeah I definitely don't disagree with that idea. As I have stated, I have always been worried about Smith's durability and the fact that he is a catcher, makes that a bit scarier to me. With that said, the club was still said to be floating Ruiz's name in trade discussions at the deadline, so with that in mind, I would not be shocked to see if the club looked to use Ruiz to improve the roster elsewhere in the offseason. Since they were said to have been kicking the tires on at least Syndergaard, I would not be surprised if the org tried to use Ruiz to be a centerpiece for a big starting pitcher acquisition. Since those deals are hard to pull off, I also would not be surprised to hear that he doesn't get traded either. If the plan again in the offseason is "big game hunting", then he makes the most sense to be used as bait, but only if we are talking a big impact player.

Yeah if like Syndergaard or Scherzer are on the table I would be willing to part with him, but otherwise they should keep him and use money to fill the holes in the BP and the back of the rotation (and maybe 1B)

I would’ve been willing to deal him for Vazquez this deadline but not in the off-season when we could sign a reliever for just money

Gavin Lux has reached base in 49 straight games, still .434/.517/.809 in 178 PAs. Hit his 24th HR (11th in OKC) last night.

Josiah Gray continues to pitch well, however, it looks as if they are limiting innings (only 10 1/3 over the last 3 appearances), he's at 124 1/3 for the year, a pretty good jump from last season (52 1/3 + whatever he did in his college season).

Dude has been legit and his fastball is now working up to 97 MPH. Some reports on him are still so-so about his secondaries, but it sounds like his floor is looking much better.

Interesting piece about the Jays and the raises they gave to their MiLB players this season. If you are unaware, MiLB players are woefully underpaid, especially at the lowest levels. Most of these guys struggle on a day by day basis and the offseason can be somewhat of a terrifying or frustrating predicament for many players. The Jays gave around a 50% raise to all of their prospects, which may sound like a lot on the surface, but in terms of general pay it is still bad. The Dodgers were innovators with the way they have maximized development, the article makes a great point of how this could be the next piece to unlock more of a players potential by helping them save more during the season so that they can survive in the offseason and concentrate more on their training. Really hope we adopt this next.
