If he can hit above .200 apparently. In all seriousness, probably north of a Grandal/Realmuto. I mean, we would take Grandal’s numbers if they were evened out over the course of a season, but those peaks and valleys make it a tougher pill to swallow. Ruiz is a much different hitter than Grandal currently and is more contact oriented. The two knocks on Ruiz have been his lack of power(though he is still young) and his arm is seen as average. Everything else is seen as way ahead for a catcher of his age. He’s also supposed to be a stellar person.

Can’t do any worse then Grandmal and Barnes superiority in defense and bounces back can only help

All I know pitchers need to have confidence in their catcher and Grandmal sucked ass longer then he would help

Feels like the Nationals hand a $100MM+ to a starting pitcher every year

MLB Network ANALyst trying to justify the Corbin getting his contract and sucking up while the elephant is in the room is the Grienke contract. Ex-teammate and not even a mention of the fact that they have been shopping him because of his albatross of a contract especially the length. Why do I watch. Then gushing over the Nats rotation not even mentioning that all 3 I believe have a TJ surgery in their past.

Someone said today that they reached out to a GM and they said that it was a terrible deal. Then mentioned he would take Greinke and his contract over the Corbin one in a heartbeat.

This may help to see that there is a question regarding the finances of the Dodgers:
    https://www.forbes.com/sites/mikeoz...be-too-onerous-for-bryce-harper/#4dc9464a7d13

I have noted a few times in recent years that there may be chickens out there yet to come home to roost. Is there a tick tock? Who knows but like many complex financial situations the Devil is in the details and above our pay grade or that of sports writers. That's why I go to the pages of Forbes, Bloomberg etc for insight.

I think those of us who are investors may want to consider that we invest in things expecting a ROI (return on investment) not to lose money or to keep the principle without gain. What is a reasonable ROI for any investment v the risk is important to us. The important things to note from my link is tat 1.36 billion of the purchase price was funded by insurance and hedge fund money both of which are expected to have reasonable ROI. Ask yourselves how much profit has been made on that investment and is there a promised fixed rate of return that has to be paid out or back at a certain date as is the case in insurance annuities? There were at the times inquiries by at least one state attorney general regarding the purchase. I believe it was NY state.

I have always wondered if the Guggenheim purchase was a long term buy/own like the O'Malleys or a shorter term acquisition flip. Guggie has owned the team during a period of increasing asset values in a rising market of cheap credit. Is that about to change and like may corporations is their debt burden and debt service about to become excessive?

    Who knows?

    • The Phillies said they are willing to get crazy to sign guys, then balked at an extra year for Corbin, even if it meant losing him to a division rival. There are whispers that they may not be as serious as folks have said in the free agent market. Also, their GM and ownership are said to not be seeing eye to eye on how to go about things. Their owner wants to spend, spend, spend while their GM is rumored to be wanting to go about things a bit more methodically.
    • The Mets are planning to compete this year and are said to be focusing on J.T. Realmuto and AJ Pollock now with talks advancing. It sounds like the Realmuto asking price is still high, but as expected, has started to come back down to earth a bit. The Mets and Marlins are said to still be a bit apart, but are making progress. The Mets are rumored to be considering parting with Brandon Nimmo or Michael Conforto, but do not want to lose Amed Rosario who was one of their top prospects entering the season, but had a fairly awful year.
    • The feeling was that the Indians wanted to see what happened with Corbin before making their move. Would guess on the surface that the Nats pulling the unexpected victory here has helped them out as most starters on the market are looked at as mid to back of the rotation starters going forward and one of the major players not landing him leaves another shark in the water. Keuchel has not really been linked to the Yankees or Phillies yet, so the Indians could once again wait for the best pitcher on the market to make his decision and see if that brings even more competition to the table.

Thank you for this. One thing for me is that I have a hard time seeing Magic tie himself to a group in a town where he is such an important factor and face that he could potentially irreparably damage that image. The writer says everything may be "hunkydory" as he is not privy to the inner workings, but that from a distance he has questions. Since this came out too, it looks like that suit was dropped, correct? The other thing is, would MLB really travel down the road again of allowing a potential Dodgers owner to purchase a team under questionable means? I really do not understand that sector of the world so it is a bit over my head, but it does seem that over the past couple of weeks, maybe everything may actually not be doom and gloom after all.

I suspect that in the world of finances what is going on is within reason as risk is part of that world. I think the real issue comes up when the world of baseball fans, writers and agents come up against what ever the financial REALITIES are for any team. In this case the Dodgers. Fans, writers and agents want based on whatever teams to spend like a drunk sailor. The commissioners office, league and team lawyers and accountants may have a different sense of reality. Thus the article about no Bryce Harper which is perhaps our financial reality at this point.

Perhaps the key concept is how much debt service does the team have and what payroll cap keeps them in good shape to meet it.

That'd seem to be correct because we did doom and gloom 2-3 years ago and they answered by re-signing Turner and Jansen. Then we rehashed doom and gloom last offseason and they answered by dealing for Machado during the season and attempting to deal for Harper as well.

Point being, so long as they keep spending, being aggressive with moves and reaching the WS, we'll probably live long enough to do doom and gloom a few more times. It'll suck to high hell if they don't sign Harper, especially after keeping Kersh aboard for his 30MM+ per, but I don't foresee fans slitting their wrists. Not in the LA market, at least. Personally, I'll be less interested during the season, but myself and those that feel similar will ultimately check in for World Series III.

The best spot in Fresno is the exact geographic center of town bc a move in any direction is considered leaving. *
