As I said in another thread, the compensatory pick will be no lower than #38. The only unsigned and qualified player that doesn't impact the pick is Nelson Cruz, as the O's had a better record. Keep an eye on the remaining players to see where this and the first round pick end up.
Congrats to Hanley. Like I said before, I loved his time in Blue, but it was time to go our separate ways. TBH, I wouldn't have signed him for 1/3 that price because we need to get younger, healthier, and more defensively sound. An aging 220lb player who throws his body around like a 19 year old 150lb guy and breaks his pinky every other week, while we try to mask his defensive shortcomings, is not a problem we need to worry about.
As far as losing the best hitting SS in the league, we can just move Matt Kemp to SS... boom, we have the best hitting SS in the league again. Problem solved.
Good for Boston; doing what they feel they have to by signing two bona fide ML stars...one an absolute monster MVP in the post. Not afraid to spend what they need to for possibly bringing the WS championship to the Beaneaters. Most teams that have the money should be thankful they can compete monitarily, and take advantage of it. I remember....when was it...oh yeah, last year...how rich and blase we were about laying down millions for top players; what a difference a year makes. While we savor the draft pick that may or may not suck eventually, and be ready, if ever, in 2020 or so.
Perhaps. But now we have a need at SS. And since we love injury prone guys who don't know how to field the position, as long as they can hit when healthy... then Matt is the perfect fit.
you're killin me hey, don't sleep on the idea of AGon at SS..we could get SVS into the lineup everyday @ 1B. SVS> Ethier :fingerscrossed:
Hanley's contract terms are 4 years 88 million with 5th year vesting option of 22 million that can bring total value to 110 million
Hanley for 22 mil per makes a bit more sense but yeah Just a reminder that Brian Wilson and Brandon League combined is like 19 million for the Dodgers next year
We gotta remember that most of these deals look great when they happen, and rarely work out. Ok, maybe League never looked good, but you get the idea.
Best part about Pablo to Boston though was the local media up here saying there was no way he was leaving SF. Almost makes me smile.
Honestly, we all knew this was coming. We simply don't have the luxury to put Hanley in the outfield or at DH, and I certainly wouldn't have been too thrilled about watching him play the infield for the next 4-5 years. We will definitely miss his bat, and I enjoyed his time here, but it just wasn't going to work long term. 4-88 is a nice contract for him, and I hope he has success in Boston. Hopefully Friedman and company can find a somewhat suitable replacement at SS. I really would love Alexeiiiiiiiii, but it doesn't look like that will happen.
I semi-understand the early FO bashing, because you always want to see your team aggressively improve; however, Zaidi and Friedman have both said that these big name free agents will have to come off the board first before they can fully evaluate the trade market. We all knew Hanley wasn't coming back, they were never going to get Sandoval, and I'm sure they were interested in Martin but not at that huge price tag. I highly doubt this is the team we head into ST with. Trades and improvements will be made.
if it doesn't happen that might signify their confidence in Seager taking over in the spring..they haven't shut the door on him as an option for that spot.
