Based on tradional stats that are losing their value more and more in the baseball world, sure. Based on everything else, Puig is way better.

Kemp (if he stays healthy) next season is projected for 2 WAR. Puig is projected for 5 WAR. Puig: 152 wRC+ (top 10 in baseball since he joined the league) to Kemp's career 128. Don't get me wrong, Kemp is a good hitter, but he doesn't really offer anything else in an age where baseball players are being evaluated differently than they ever have before.

Idk what it is, but Puig doesn't get the credit a player with a 150+ wRC+ gets. A friend just told me that without Kemp, Gonzalez is our best hitter, which is far from the truth.

However bad you think Kemp is in center defensively Myers would be way worse because he'd be learning on the job and Kemp has played there and will be motivated to prove us wrong IF of course he indeed is a Padre!!!

I think Shields is a good pitcher but I think he's over-hyped. I mean if you took the FA pitchers coming next year and put them in this FA class Shields goes out of the top 10 and even if he signed there it wouldn't be a oh my god they are going to beat us because of the move. MadBum/Hudson (old), Cain (coming off surgery and has thrown alot of innings), The Freak (has lost it) and Shields (IF). Agree however our risk in signing those guys is HUGE but we still have our big 3 so I'm not worried. AND it's an odd year :D

Agree on the Giants staff condition...problems. But the guys we signed are very iffy for whatever they gave them. Don't care about the money really, but rather have a more "solid" starter than Anderson, and Shields can be damn good, let's face it. McCarthy seems overated to me...I hope not.
Our acquisitions weren't any "trimming the fat" kind of moves, actually the opposite is true, IMO. Maybe Nicasio was a cheapy....probably.
and the odd year thing....because the Giants don't win in them?
The sad thing is that they do in the even ones. It's been hard to look at them over this 5 year span, and escape the haunting facts; they just don't seem that damn good.

ah, so this will be the guy who turns into a stud when he joins the giants :smh:
    • The Marlins and Giants are closing in on a deal that would send third baseman Casey McGehee to San Francisco, Juan C. Rodriguez of the Sun-Sentinel reports on Twitter. Minor league pitching would likely head back to Miami in the deal.

We will probably soon see the David vs Goliath comparisons in the NL West as fans elsewhere begin to root for the Padres to up end the big spending with the largest luxury cap Dodgers.

Don't look now guys but the Padres are all of a sudden very relevant and very scary. Then the damn Gnats get McGehee? He's not the Panda but he is serviceable and is a power threat. The NL West has just gotten more difficult to win. I wonder if the FO feels now that they have to make another big acquisition to counteract the Padres move. Hello Max?????

He isn't a power threat, can drive in runs, but no power at all. I was saying last night how scary the Padres could be and that was before they got Upton.

I think we're overestimating a lot of these NL teams.

Do you guys think the FO would have traded Matt to the Madre's if they had completed the other major aquisitions first? I mean trading kemps potential prodiction to a team in our division who had Upton, Myers, middlebrooks, Norris etc..? Seems like the madre's put the kemp deal together then went after every one else to make sure they got him beforehand..just curious what you guys think?

i don't think it would've mattered to our FO. in their eyes, the Dodgers are still a 94 win team and so that'd mean the Padres would have to make up 17 games..just not likely. and then other than Upton, most of the guys that they've been picking up have serious health issues. Norris and his concussions, Kemp and his everything, Myers is coming off a broken wrist, and now 3 of their 6 starters are brittle as hell.

Pads are basically in the same place the Dodgers were in 2012..just collecting as much talent as possible to excite the fan-base and try to make an immediate run, fit be damned. even their defense has potential to be just as bad as those Dodgers. Lol only real difference is they don't have a Kershaw/Greinke/Ryu/Kenley combo. well, you could also say that AGon is more reliable than any of the everyday guys they have, but you get the idea.

They don't have a Kershaw or a Greinke or a Ryu, but their bullpen is far better than the Dodgers bullpen.
