With the playoffs expanded, very few teams are now clear-cut sellers at the deadline, and for big market teams it's even harder to justify. It's very probable that the Dodgers won't be sellers for the next 20 years.

Yadier Alvarez Seeking Waiver To Allow Deal
By Charlie Wilmoth [February 27, 2015 at 2:31pm CST]

Representatives for Cuban pitcher Yadier Alvarez are seeking a waiver that would allow him to sign before July 2, Kiley McDaniel of Fangraphs reports. A previous report had indicated Alvarez and fellow Cuban hurler Vladimir Gutierrez would not be able to sign before July because international prospects born after September 1, 1995 must register with MLB before they could sign, and Alvarez and Gutierrez were not registered.

MLB can waive that requirement, though, for a player who has “a compelling justification for his failure to register.” Such a waiver has never been given to a Cuban player, McDaniel notes, but the league has granted waivers for players from the Dominican. One might think the fact that Cuban players are unable to register while living in Cuba could potentially provide a compelling justification.

A waiver would allow Alvarez to sign either in the current signing period or the one that begins next July. That could widen his field of suitors, because Alvarez will be subject to rules regarding international bonus pools. The Yankees, Red Sox, Angels, Diamondbacks and Rays have all exceeded their 2014-15 bonus pools, so for the signing period beginning in July, they won’t be able to sign any player subject to the pool system for more than $300K. If Alvarez were allowed to sign before that, any of those teams could theoretically try to sign him. McDaniel writes, though, that the Dodgers appear to be most interested in Alvarez right now.

Dodgers second baseman Alex Guerrero is not playing to return to the minor leagues this season, reports MLB.com. The way that Guerrero's contract is constructed, the Dodgers cannot send Guerrero down to the minors without his permission.

"The team does not know what they are going to do, but all I can control is keep working hard and they will get the final word," Guerrero said. "I don't want to go down. I'm not going down. I feel like I can get better here at this level and play every day. I think that's what every player wants. You want to be in the Major Leagues and play as much as you can.

Guerrero only appeared in 11 games with Los Angeles in 2014, getting one hit in 13 at-bats.

"I just want to keep working hard and let my work speak for me," Guerrero continued. "I'm just being told to keep working hard and I feel like I'm getting better every day."

    • Infielder Alex Guerrero is facing a crucial year in Dodgers camp, MLB.com’s Jesse Sanchez writes. Guerrero, who’s now in the second year of a four-year deal, cannot be optioned to the minors this season without his permission, so if the Dodgers don’t find space for him on their active roster, they’ll have to to trade or release him. I don’t want to go down. I’m not going down,” Guerrero says. I feel like I can get better here at this level and play every day. I think that’s what every player wants.” Guerrero, 28, hit well at Triple-A last season even given the offense-heavy environment at Albuquerque, batting .329/.364/.613 in 258 plate appearances. The Dodgers have a crowded middle infield, however, with Justin Turner and Darwin Barney also available to back up Howie Kendrick at second base, and there are questions about Guerrero’s defense.

    i wasn't aware of this
    should deal him and :fingerscrossed:
    • Alex Guerrero‘s contract and the Dodgers roster situation makes for quite a puzzle, as Dave Cameron of Fangraphs writes. On the one hand, Guerrero can refuse an optional assignment and has said he will do just that. On the other, if he is traded he will earn the right to opt out of his deal after the season. Cameron posts that the club could send Guerrero out in exchange for some savings on his 2015 tab, agreeing to remain responsible for post-2015 responsibilities while hoping he will opt out. The Angels, Blue Jays, Rockies, and Rangers all look like reasonable landing spots, in Cameron’s estimation.

Yeah, that Cameron article was good. It's going to be tough to move Guerrero because of all of his contract stipulations. We can't send him down. If we trade him he can opt out of his contract, which he will if he has a good year. If he sucks, he can opt in to his contract and be paid to blow. Not a lot of upside and a bit of a gamble for any team that would want to pick him up.
