Brandon League Likely Out Several Months
By Jeff Todd [March 27, 2015 at 5:45pm CDT]

Dodgers righty Brandon League is expected to miss at least a couple of months with a right shoulder injury, manager Don Mattingly told reporters including MLB.com’s Ken Gurnick (via Twitter). An MRI revealed that there was sufficient injury to require League to be shut down, though it appears he will avoid surgery for the time being.

League, 32, figured to be a fairly important piece in the Dodgers pen. Though he is undoubtedly overpaid as he enters the final guaranteed year of his three-year, $22.5MM pact, League is nevertheless a plenty viable arm. Last year, he tossed 63 innings of 2.57 ERA ball, compiling a 3.40 FIP in spite of just 5.4 K/9 and 3.9 BB/9 because he also managed to induce groundballs at a ridiculous 67.5% clip.

League’s deal includes a vesting option that will not almost certainly not vest. Of course, that was quite unlikely regardless since the clause was tied to games finished, requiring League to be the last Dodger to toe the rubber at least 55 times this year. Barring a run of unpredictable events, that was not going to happen anyway.

The news on League is perhaps most troubling for what it means for the Dodgers’ overall pitching depth. Already compensating for injuries to Kenley Jansen and starter Hyun-jin Ryu, the team is looking somewhat thin on established, healthy arms. Of course, with plenty of trade candidates amongst their positions players, the Dodgers could conceivably swing a deal or two to fill some innings.

I mean, he's better than most people give him credit for, but that just opens the door for one of the new guys to fill in.

Management should really consider signing Soriano, this bullpen worries me.

Another little Indian goes down....and then there were...uh...how many left? If the guy is going to be shut down, incidently, and his injuries merit this, then why not have the surgery? It seems it's inevitable...or is this on the docket for his next team?

League expected to miss at least 2 months
By Eric Stephen | True Blue LA — March 27, 2015

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Dodgers relief pitcher Brandon League will definitely open the season on the disabled list and will likely be out at least a few months with right posterior shoulder inflammation, the team said on Friday.

League met with team physician Dr. Neal ElAttrache on Friday to discuss the results of an MRI of League's right shoulder. It is as of yet unknown just how long League will miss, but it is clear that League won't be pitching anytime soon.

"It's an extended period of time," Mattingly said. "The option everybody likes is rest, then a progression. This route of action is conservative. Rest will be three weeks, at least."

Disabled list stints can be backdated to March 25, so if League were placed on the 60-day disabled list the earliest he could be activated is May 25, which fits with the vague timeline outlined by Mattingly. Putting League on the 60-day disabled list would open up a roster spot to add one of the non-roster pitchers to the opening day roster.

League last pitched in a game on March 9. He is in the final season of a three-year, $22.5 million contract.

It’s been a rough Spring for Dodgers late inning relievers. Kenley Jansen is out at least another five weeks, but he is getting his walking boot removed on Tuesday. Jansen has been throwing while in the boot.

While Jansen is on the mend and looks to be back on the mound soon, Brandon League‘s prognosis is a lot more concerning. Ken Gurnick reported that the once successful closer (League saved 37 games for Seattle in 2011) was “devastated” by his shoulder injury. League had a underappreciated season for the Dodgers in 2014, and the groundball specialist was looking to be an important arm in the late innings for the Dodgers while Kenley is rehabbing. League chose to take a non-surgical approach to his “significant right shoulder injury,” and he will be out at least eight weeks. Brandon will open the season on the disabled list alongside Kenley Jansen and Hyun-jin Ryu who have also succumbed to Spring injuries.

The details of League’s shoulder injury have been hazy. It has been described as posterior right shoulder inflammation by the Dodgers. Surgery was an option, but the recovery time for arthroscopic clean-up surgery would have been longer than the eight weeks and would have essentially kept League out the entirety of the season. Brandon League last pitched for the Dodgers on March 9th, but he felt shoulder discomfort a couple of days later during his bullpen session. He tried a cortisone injection, but the discomfort continued during subsequent Spring Training bullpen sessions.

League pitched 1 1/3 inning this Spring in 2 games. He allowed 5 runs on 3 hits with a strikeout and a walk.

Even though League’s MRI showed no new structural damage from a 2012 MRI, the significance of his shoulder injury still could lead to surgery down the line should this conservative eight-week rehab program fail to relieve his shoulder inflammation.

Well this sucks, I actually like League. I mean his contract sucks in retrospect, but I still like him in the bullpen. Hopefully he can come back mid season healthy.

    League shifts focus to rehab

The Los Angeles Dodgers and Brandon League were dealt a tough blow this week when it was announced that he would be out at least two months due to a shoulder issue.

League avoided surgery, but will have to rest and slowly work back to getting on a mound. While he was considered a near-lock to make the bullpen, the right-hander will likely go to the 60-day disabled list now and will be out until at least June.

Instead of letting the injury bring him down, League has taken an optimistic approach via Ken Gurnick of MLB.com:

“It was kind of devastating, but I’m past that point,” said League, who was examined by Drs. Neal ElAttrache and James Andrews Friday in Las Vegas, where they were attending an orthopedic surgeons convention. “I had time to sulk on the hour flight. I’ve got goals in mind.”

Fortunately for the Dodgers, the new front office focused on bullpen depth in the offseason and will not be hurt by the League injury for now. His injury will open up a spot for another arm in the bullpen, giving the young players a chance to make the Opening Day roster.

After a disastrous 2013, League regained his confidence and threw well for the Dodgers. He finished with a 2.57 ERA in 63 innings for the NL West champions. He is in the final year of his three-year deal and will have to come back healthy in order to try and prove to teams that he can be an effective reliever.
