maybe he feels that his injuries have healed and that he can go back to being sort of his old self

    perhaps
but i think it goes back to passion/desire
players often come back when they realize they've still got that fire in their belly

    Yeah but...

    like Fall explained..
Too much ego in his alpha male head to be second fiddle to anyone.. ever.

can't disagree with any of that
but that's how he feels now, while he's still in the limelight
how will he feel after he's sat down for a while?
when he's a former player and no longer getting the attention he's been accustomed to since he was a teen?

like diablo said, it's a minimal chance at best
    but i don't think he'd come back to a jordan/wizards scenario
but if the spurs or warriors called... who knows?

    umm okay... that's settled then

Spurs and Warriors are simply too good of teams to want his ball hogging no D 38 year old ass to mess up their team chemistry

There's a difference between unretiring and returning for a 13th season, and unretiring to return for a 21st season.
I think the length of this man's career is being downplayed in this discussion.
He's gone through achilles, knee, back, and shoulder soreness this season..basically a culmination of the past 4 years worth of injuries hitting him at various points all in 1 half season.
    It's over.
And if, monster IF, he ever did come back he's not going to the rival Spurs to help Duncan, his greatest adversary, win a 6th or 7th championship for Duncan's team/franchise.
Like Cap said, nor would they want him because frankly they don't need him...Warriors obviously don't either.
This all gonna feel so ridiculous when he shoots 5-30 coming out of the all-star break.

can't disagree with either of you
and while leopards don't generally change their spots
sitting idly and wanting to play can change someone's perspective
all that said, i don't think it will happen
just saying, that however unlikely, it could :stirpot:

Just another something that he can hold over Duncan's head, being that Duncan's pretty much been playing beta for the last 4 or 5 years

cuz ego's of the basketball elite work like that??:scratchchin:

maybe Duncan has the high ground as the better 'team player' and nothing Kobe can say mattered next

When you're forced to be a " team player " because you're breaking down physically and other players on the team are passing you by, how much can you gloat in those regards?
Because they have a head strong coach that's gonna play to his strengths regardless of what any one of his players think.

Yeah Duncan is a stud between the ears as well. Leads by example so I believe it.

Reminds one of the Bill Russell v. Chamberlain comparisons... Wilt was the larger specimen but ole Bill had all sorts of smarts over him. Just knew how to beat him even if Wilt had 40+.

Media and fans were calling for his retirement. Message boards were filled with people saying that Kobe was killing the franchise and that he should have already retired.
That must have finally cracked Kobe's alpha athlete psyche. After the injuries and other bad news that Kobe has had to deal with the past few years this fan and media outrage over his decline in skills might have been enough. For the only reason that he finally believed that it was true, he was sucking and maybe he should have retired.
You could hear that in his voice early on this season. There was a vulnerability there that had never been.
He accepted that his body was finally too old to come back to a form he recognized.
Then the fanbase understood that this season is being conducted as a tanking season by design because of the protected pick.
And Kobe started to get a lot of love from the media and the players once he announced he was retiring.
I think the last straw that might have convince Kobe to retire was when Kevin Durant came out to defend Kobe in the media.
Durant maybe didnt get that his defense of Kobe had the secondary affect of meaning that Kobe needed defending. That he was a victim. That he was really sucking.
When one of the best players in the game starts defending the honor of an aging veteran great like Kobe it kinda means that the veteran is being viewed with sympathy.
Kobe dont want your sympathy. He doesnt want to feel like the old man that cant hang anymore but people are sorry for him so they protect him.

If he plays the rest of the season the way he has played the last 3 games then he is still a very effective player. Like a Reggie Miller if he can continue hitting those threes.

WTF. I would be stunned. I can't say how much I blame Mitch though. He did make the deal for Chris Paul before Stern fucked us. Traded for Howard, which I thought was a good move at the time. Rebuilt the Lakers for the 2nd run with Kobe, got Pau from the Grizzlies. I think Jeannie was the one who wanted to reward Kobe, which has hamstrung this team for the last years

Looks like Kobe couldn't wait until the all star break..6-25 tonight..3-22 until he pulled that late game BS.
And Randle, 19 rebounds, playing like he never wants to go back to the bench.

yeah Spurs and Warriors would not tolerate 6-25 evenings or else they themselves would miss the playoffs.
