Angels have to consider trading Mike Trout
by David Schoenfield | ESPN Senior Writer — 2 hours ago

Crushing news for Garrett Richards and the Los Angeles Angels as the power-armed right-hander will have to undergo Tommy John surgery. Jeff Passan's report on Yahoo! Sports also says that Andrew Heaney, currently on the disabled list with a strained flexor muscle, is rehabbing in an attempt to avoid his own Tommy John surgery. C.J. Wilson is still out, Jered Weaver is throwing 80 mph meatballs and Albert Pujols is hitting .198 with a .666 OPS.

In other words: A team projected as mediocre is now 13-15 and looking worse, and that's with Mike Trout tearing things up with a .317/.400/.596 line. Did we mention the Angels have what is universally regarded as the worst farm system in the game? Which is why Dave Cameron of FanGraphs wrote this:

And that reality prompts the obvious question: is it time to think about trading Mike Trout?

You never want to be in a position where you're potentially thinking about trading one of the greatest players of all time. The Angels should want Mike Trout to retire having worn only their jersey, and go into the Hall of Fame as a lifelong Angel. When you have a +10 win player, you should want to take advantage of his greatness and put a winner around him.

But the Angels have tried that, and thanks to some bad decisions that have long-term consequences -- the Albert Pujols contract still has another $140 million left after this season -- it's not entirely clear that the team can actually do that. Their farm system isn't just the worst in baseball; it's the worst that anyone can remember in some time. If the Angels keep Mike Trout, and just keep trying to surround him with decent free agents while trying to build back up the prospect base, there's a pretty good chance they'll be a 75 win team for the remainder of his contract, and then they’ll have to convince him to re-sign another contract with a franchise that spent six years failing to provide him with adequate support.
Superstar Mike Trout is signed through 2020, but the struggling Angels lack any depth behind him. AP Photo/Jae C. Hong

Trout is signed through 2020, four more seasons after this one. The Angels do get Weaver and Wilson off the books after this season, so that's $40 million in payroll to play with. But Trout's salary will leap from $16 million this year to $34 million in 2018, eating away at some of that money. So Dave's question on trading Trout is, I agree, appropriate. The Angels will have to consider the idea, although I'd hate to be the general manager burdened with the task of obtaining fair value for Mike Trout.

So let's play a little fantasy game. Which teams could potentially come up with a package of young players that would tease Angels GM Billy Eppler into even thinking of a trade?

Los Angeles Dodgers -- From Keith Law's No. 2-ranked organization, you could start with pitchers Julio Urias (No. 5 overall on Keith's preseason top 100) and Jose De Leon (No. 60), both in Triple-A and close to the majors. Outfielder Alex Verdugo (51) doesn't turn 20 until later this month and is already in Double-A. Outfielder Yusniel Diaz (No. 77) is a 19-year-old Cuban yet to play in the States but with tools resembling those of Lorenzo Cain and A.J. Pollock. But if you're the Angels, don't you ask for Corey Seager? And would you really trade Trout to your city rivals?

Chicago Cubs -- Can you imagine adding Trout to this lineup? I think you could convince Dexter Fowler to move to left field. The Cubs have Keith's No. 4-rated farm system, led by shortstop Gleyber Torres (No. 15), who is off to a slow start in Class A, hitting .191. Catcher Willson Contreras (No. 27), however, has a .451 OBP at Triple-A Iowa and would fill a big need at the big league level. Second baseman/outfielder Ian Happ, the ninth overall pick in the 2015 draft, is another high-upside bat and is hitting well at Class A. You also could ask for Kyle Schwarber, a perfect DH, or take a chance on Jorge Soler's production eventually matching his tools.

Boston Red Sox -- Keith rated them only the No. 10 organization but they have four huge upside talents in third baseman Rafael Devers (No. 7), second baseman Yoan Moncada (No. 17), center fielder Andrew Benintendi (No. 18) and pitcher Anderson Espinoza (No. 38). Moncada is hitting .348/.478/.506 with 19 steals for Class A Salem and Benintendi is hitting .376/.435/.653, although both have hit just one home run. Still, Benintendi could be on the Michael Conforto path: drafted in one year and reaching the majors the next. He should be moving up to Double-A soon and could reach Boston before September. Jackie Bradley Jr. also could be part of the deal, along with Pablo Sandoval (just kidding!).

Texas Rangers -- The Rangers are loaded with talent at the Triple-A level, even after dealing a big package of prospects last season to acquire Cole Hamels. Outfielder Nomar Mazara (No. 9) already has reached Arlington, but Joey Gallo and Jurickson Profar are hanging out in the minors. Center fielder Lewis Brinson (No. 32) continues to see his stock rise after a 1.004 OPS in the minors last year and a solid start in 2016 in Double-A. Pitcher Dillon Tate (No. 50) was the fourth overall selection last June and has cruised through his first three outings in Class A. But would you dare trade with a division rival?

Colorado Rockies -- Let this happen, if only because we all want to see the numbers Trout would put up in Coors Field. But the Rockies do have a nice system, No. 7 on Keith's preseason list. Shortstop Brendan Rodgers (No. 11) is probably a top-five overall prospect right now after hitting .366 with 16 extra-base hits in 24 games to start the season at Class A. He isn't necessarily blocked by Trevor Story because he's an even bigger talent, but it does mean the Rockies have two shortstops of the future. (Of course, the Angels have Andrelton Simmons.) Third baseman Ryan McMahon (No. 62) is blocked by Nolan Arenado. Outfielders David Dahl (No. 58) and Raimel Tapia (No. 78) are both in Double-A, with Dahl already at eight home runs but Tapia struggling. The Angels lso could get outfielder Carlos Gonzalez, and then look to flip him for even more prospects.

OK, this is admittedly crazy talk. Odds of the Angels ever trading Trout have to be slim to slim to none.

But as Joaquin Andujar once said, "There is one word in America that says it all, and that one word is, 'You never know.'"

Saw that. Intriguing, but the cost will be very high. And even though our hitting is much to be desired, it's our pitching and BP that still worries me the most. Trout doesn't fix that problem unless he increases our run production per game by 2-4 runs...which I don't think any single person could.

But it's hard not to think of the possibilities.

Can we just give them Crawford, Ethier, Anderson, MehCarthy, Yimi and Guerrero just as a token of our cross town affection??

Tell them to call us with WHATEVER is the highest offer for Trout and we'll match it PLUS an extra million just for Arte's (stupid) pockets?

Cannot process Trout with the Dodgers.

    • The Dodgers have claimed relief pitcher Casey Fien off waivers from the Twins. Fien, 32, has a 7.90 ERA, 6.74 FIP and 1.76 WHIP in 14 relief appearances this season. He’s been susceptible to the longball, allowing five home runs in just 13.2 innings.

Lincecum Showcase: Notes on Dodgers interest and other details
by Matthew Moreno | Dodger Blue — 3 hours ago

Tim Lincecum held his long-awaited showcase on Friday afternoon at Scottsdale Stadium, the Spring Training home of the San Francisco Giants. The environment was of course a familiar one for the right-hander, as he spent the past nine seasons with San Francisco.

However, the setting and circumstances were not. Coming off a season in which a hip injury limited him to just 15 starts, Friday’s throwing session was the first Lincecum completed in front of scouts, executives and other team personnel since undergoing hip surgery last September.

The Los Angeles Dodgers were among the several teams who had a presence at the showcase. Lincecum threw 41 pitches over two innings — 20 in the first, and 21 in the second — uncorking his full arsenal of pitches (fastball, cutter, slider, curveball, changeup).

According to John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle, the Dodgers have interest in the 31-year-old right-hander, though Lincecum isn’t holding firm to remaining on the West Coast:

"He told me he doesn’t need to pitch on the West Coast, that he’s at a point in his career he’s willing to go anywhere. But let it be known the Angels had several officials at the showcase and have legitimate interest. The Dodgers are in the mix, too, and plenty of other teams were in attendance with rotation holes."

Lincecum also said he’s seeking a one-year contract at present time:

Lincecum said he wants a one-year deal, to prove himself before seeking any long-term arrangements. That could make negotiations easier and quicker, and the Lincecum camp is anticipating fast-paced activity.

Another factor in negotiations is Lincecum’s belief he’s already prepared to pitch in the Minors:

“I want to make sure I’m ready for whoever needs me,” said Lincecum, insisting he’s ready to pitch five or six innings in a Triple-A game.

Lincecum went 108-83 with a 3.61 ERA, 3.36 FIP and 1.27 WHIP in 269 games (261 starts) over his career with the Giants. He was 7-4 with a 4.13 ERA and 1.48 WHIP during an injury-shorten 2015, all the while battling hip trouble.

Lincecum’s left hip was repaired by shaving down bone to allow greater range of motion, also improving stability, and by reattaching a partially torn labrum. Although Lincecum’s desire is to start, there’s speculation he may be utilized out of the bullpen.

The Dodgers certainly have question marks at the back of their rotation, but Mike Bolsinger, Brandon McCarthy and Hyun-Jin Ryu are all making steady progress toward a return.

However, Dodgers’ spending power and president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman’s belief is stockpiling pitching depth figure to make them a team to watch for Lincecum’s services.

Bolsinger, McCarthy, Ryu close to beginning rehab assignments
by Matthew Moreno | Dodger Blue — 7 hours ago

UPDATE (May 7, 9:00 a.m. PT): Mike Bolsinger begins his rehab assignment on Saturday with Triple-A Oklahoma City in Colorado Springs. Sam LeCure was originally slated to start for the OKC Dodgers.

Of the 10 Los Angeles Dodgers who began the 2016 season on the disabled list, six were pitchers. Most notable were starters Brett Anderson, Mike Bolsinger, Brandon McCarthy and Hyun-Jin Ryu. Of the foursome, only McCarthy was a lock to be in that position when Spring Training began.

The Dodgers’ pitching depth quickly eroded as the spring wore on, as Anderson required back surgery for a bulging disk, Bolsinger sustained an oblique injury and Ryu’s recovery from last May’s shoulder surgery was stop-and-go.

The timing of Bolsinger’s injury was particularly frustrating, given he felt the injury while warming up for a start on the day he essentially was selected as the club’s fifth starting pitcher.

Bolsinger, McCarthy and Ryu have all made strides in their recoveries over recent weeks, throwing multiple bullpen sessions without issue.

According to Bill Plunkett of the OC Register, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said the trio of starters are on the verge of beginning rehab assignments:

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Friday that Ryu (recovering from shoulder surgery a year ago), right-hander Brandon McCarthy (Tommy John surgery last April) and right-hander Mike Bolsinger (an oblique injury suffered this spring) could each begin minor league injury-rehabilitation assignments in the next two weeks.

Roberts added the Dodgers may use a significant chunk of the 30-day maximum for rehab assignments one each starter:

“It’s No.1 with their health and then necessity, where we’re at,” Roberts said of how long those rehab assignments might go. “And there has to be some build up. The full 30 days? Maybe not. But it’s going to be three or four full turns.”

Bolsinger is the furthest along in his recovery of the three rehabbing pitchers. Though, Ryu faced Minor League batters on Friday afternoon at Dodger Stadium. McCarthy is on record with his desire to make one or two starts prior to the 2016 All-Star Game, which is July 19.

Assuming all continues to go well, the current schedule calls for Bolsinger, McCarthy and Ryu to all return at some point in June. Ryu was transferred to the 60-day DL on Saturday in a corresponding move to the Dodgers claiming reliever Casey Fien off waivers; the earliest Ryu can be activated is May 24.

My brother went to High School with Casey and played youth basketball with him. Real nice guy. Everyone on Facebook is happy for him. Imagine being released and then getting picked up by your hometown team.

That said, I don't get this move. He's going to cost us 2.3 M dollars and is having a really bad year.

Edit: he was on waivers, not released

It's not really a signing, more like just getting a warm body with some experience for the minors. He has an option remaining, so he'll probably be sent to the minors. If he has anything of intrigue, cool. Seems pretty inconsequential at the moment

Mentioning that should be a bannable offense.

It will be interesting to see where he lands. If the Giants, who know him better than anyone, aren't interested it will speak volumes.

Apparently the little twerp still sees himself as a starter.

I don't get the Timmeh hate here...aside from the fact he was a Giant.
On a team like ours, with huge pitching holes and gaping wounds cascading losses left and right, wtf is the difference? It literally can't get worse in some instances. What's the harm...and the usual bs with the "he costs too much" like it's personal money from the family 401K is so fucking tiresome, man. Talk about flogging a dead horse...and at a time where weasley scumbags shoot up banned substances just to get the money from a long term contract, and then give the "fuck the suspension" shrug, the fact that Lincecum only wants a one year contract, so he can prove himself first, makes him someone that should be applauded, not ridiculed.

    Mmyeah, fuck Tim Lincecum.
    That's all I got there.
Fien is pretty much day to day operations stuff.
Where are all these suspensions that were supposed to come down?
