    in retrospect
probably would have been better to start him at home
against a team like the pads
then we could have saved some face and lost 2-0

Dodgers have decision to make on Julio Urias
by Doug Padilla | ESPN Staff Writer — 24 minutes ago

NEW YORK -- Known to be able to swallow a person whole, not even the Los Angeles Dodgers' brightest young pitcher could escape the wrath of New York.

Julio Urias, at the tender young age of 19, threw 81 pitches in a seemingly forgettable 2 2/3 innings Friday against the New York Mets at Citi Field. A far as major league debuts go ... it was one.

Just don’t expect Urias to feel sorry for himself. He knows he still has work to do to get better, but he held his head up high after the game and stressed the positives.

“I will never forget the first strikeout, especially being a batter like [Curtis] Granderson,” Urias said through an interpreter. “I will never forget anything that happened in this game because this is the happiest day of my life.”

Granderson indeed proved his mettle long after Urias had departed with a game-ending home run in the ninth inning, a half-inning after Chase Utley tied the score with a three-run double. The Mets won the opener of a three-game weekend series by a 6-5 count.

The Dodgers were prepared for any and all scenarios when it came to Urias, but they still seemed confident knowing of their pitcher’s poise and maturity, as well as his 27 consecutive scoreless innings at Triple-A Oklahoma City.

But the Mets don’t play in the Pacific Coast League, and Urias has never pitched in a jammed-packed ballpark that looks like a giant five-layer cake from the inside. And at this level, in his first career outing, he was going to have to fill the strike zone to get the calls on the edges of the plate.

“There was a lot of excitement, and I thought he kept his composure and I thought he had good stuff,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. “There were some pitches on the edges that he might be used to getting the call. But he wasn’t wild -- I think he was just missing and getting behind. I thought his fastball was good and fastball command might be a tick off.”

That was one big tick. Of his 81 pitches, Urias threw just 42 of them for strikes. It was not a ratio that was ideal for going deep into a game. Urias was asked about not getting calls on close pitches.

“Yes, I thought some of them were in the zone. I have to look at the video to double-check and see if, in fact, they were strikes, and if it’s not, then it was a good call by the umpire,” he said.

He insisted that he was not flustered by the turn of events.

At the very least, the Dodgers got the first start out of the way for the young left-hander, generally regarded as a future star. Nothing the Mets could do to him, two years before he is even old enough to order a round of drinks for his teammates, will change that.

“Yes, I think there is a reason why the team called me up,” Urias said. “Baseball isn’t easy, but I am going to continue to work so that next time we can get those results.”

The Dodgers will now meet to discuss what is in Urias’ best interest, and the team’s best interest. If he starts again, it figures to be next week in the team’s four-game series at Wrigley Field against the Chicago Cubs.

Fastball-heavy against the Mets, Urias could end up offering the first-place Cubs a whole different approach.

“I have to talk to my pitching coach and my catcher,” Urias said. “It was my first time out, and I know they wanted the best for me, so I followed their advice. If it is a change that I expect to make in the future, they want me to make in the future, that’s something we will work toward.”

Many of those early fastballs that Urias missed were high in the strike zone, something Roberts blamed on nerves and adrenaline.

“I’m not going to lie, when I went out there, I started thinking about everything I had to go through to get here,” Urias said. “But when I was on the mound, I was able to settle down and feel a little more comfortable. Unfortunately we weren’t able to get the results we wanted.”

If the city that doesn’t sleep was enough to give Urias problems, there is no telling if Chicago will be his kind of town next week. Wrigley Field’s tight quarters and fan intensity, especially as the Cubs are rolling this season, will be another animal altogether.

But Urias showed no signs of backing down, even after the Mets tried to ruin the teenager’s Friday night in the big city.

“I’m very happy,” Urias insisted. “This is the best day of my life, as it is for any big league player that makes their debut. Although we didn’t get the results we wanted, I will continue to work hard, and I thank God for the opportunity he gave me.”

Stuff was there, command wasn't. Ump didn't help.

Kershaws first game @NYM looked somewhat similar (his first away game and second start):

    3.2IP 4ER 2ks

I was expecting some earned runs but the lack of command was nerves. Ump squeezing him didn't help at all.

He caught a bad break on Legares' hit. Seeing eye bloop off the end of the bat which Seager almost flagged down.

Looks to me like the " bright lights" factor, no matter how it isn't supposed to mean anything, just might.

Well, bleh is it may be, the article writer, and his manager, and he himself somewhat, said as much.
But OK, if the bright lights mean zero, they mean zero.

Mets away was not the right game for guns to start. Agree it should have been a home game with a lame team to start.

Something is no syncing with this FO and Manager.....and kinda reaked of desperation.

But it's just his first start of hopefully many future chances. I'd like to see steady improvement.

This is a .500 team at best...so no high hopes so far this year.

    I love this kid.
    Mature like the best kids.
Its not just what he says but in his sinaloan drawl he comes off as super confident no nonsense kind of guy.
Sinaloa is to baseball what texas is to football. And like texans sinaloans are all about family god country and their semipro sport of choice.
Dude grew up playing ball on a team with his oqn family members.
His grandpa was the pitcher his dad the catcher and young Julio played 1B.
He didnt want to have eye surgery because he didnt want any layoff to mess with the rhythm he had been building. The organization told him that it didnt matter and that if he needed 4 or 5 outings to get his mojo back they wouldnt count it against him as a regression. They urged him to get it done and he did. Resulted in him sucking a bit for a month... Then came back kershaw like dominant.

    Dude has the right stuff.

Dodgers option Urias back to OKC
    ESPN — 4 hours ago

NEW YORK -- One day after becoming the first teenage starting pitcher in over a decade, the Los Angeles Dodgers sent Julio Urias back to Triple-A Oklahoma City.

The Dodgers' top prospect, and widely regarded as the top prospect in all of baseball, lasted just 2 2/3 innings against the New York Mets on Friday. In making his debut, he became the first pitcher to start a major league game before his 20th birthday since Felix Hernandez in 2005.

To take his spot on the 25-man roster, the Dodgers selected the contract of right-handed reliever Casey Fien from Oklahoma City on Saturday.

"We thought Julio threw the ball well. It was just where he's at and where our bullpen's at," manager Dave Roberts said. "It was more of the fact that we need to have coverage in the bullpen for the next couple, three games."

Urias will continue to be used as a starter at Oklahoma City. The Dodgers have made no secret of their desire to keep Urias' innings to a minimum this season and have even suggested using him out of the bullpen as the season progresses. That switch will not happen yet.

The Dodgers were confident Urias could be successful Friday, taking a 1.10 ERA and 27 consecutive scoreless innings into the outing. But the Mets tagged the youngster for three first-inning runs. The left-hander also battled command issues, registering four walks.

Despite his struggles, and less-than-desirable outcome Friday, the Mexico native still called it the best day of his life. His parents were on hand to see him fulfill his dream of pitching in the major leagues.

"I talked to him this morning and he was still on Cloud 9," Roberts said. "He was excited about last night. He had a chance to have his family here and celebrate that moment, and I just encouraged him and complimented him on how he handled himself last night."

The Dodgers have not ruled out the possibility of bringing back Urias to the major leagues later in the season.

"I'm not going to lie, when I went out there I started thinking about everything I had to go through to get here," Urias said through an interpreter following Friday's game. "But when I was on the mound, I was able to settle down and feel a little more comfortable. Unfortunately we weren't able to get the results we wanted."

They need to stretch out his appearances over time so he doesnt accrue too many innings and hit FA a year too early.

While I thinking it was fucking dumb to literally use him as a 1 start, spot starter.....

It was very exciting to see a 19 year old in a major league game. First player ever younger than me.

Stuff looked good, living 93-95... threw a couple good curve's, changeup was basically a non factor. All 3 of those hits in the 1st inning weren't bad pitches. Nerves got to him obviously as his command was trash. But he'll be back soon I hope.

Also, made David Wright look like a bitch. So that was cool.

    Well that's pretty easy.

Point taken though. Some positives for sure. Disappointed he won't get a second start.

nerds obviously think he needs more work in aaa
    and maybe he does
but he's arguably already better than any starter we have not named kershaw

He did look impressive in demeanor, and given the "rookie strikezone", obviously a real thing unfortunately, might have fared better if it wasn't.
Although basically a traditionalist, I kinda liked his attitude looking back at the ump after a bad ( or close call that didn't go his way) with a " for real... are you serious ?" expression .
Maybe the ump didn't though...went out of his way to squeeze him in the 2nd and 3rd.

He was squeezing him in the 1st too, just unfortunate. Although I totally believe we'll see him again this season.
