Designed like a classic newspaper site.
    Operated like a blog network.
Using an e-commerce SaaS cloud platform as the content manager.
Wedded to the forum and other social media.
Using RSS feeds of popular news stories.
Hacked up into various segments using quotes from the story by users like Irish who add their introductions, commentary, conclusions, etc...

We take something written in the paper and a user like Irish puts his spin on whatever the original writer talked about while keeping most of the original news report/story in place.
DSP would not be reporting news, but reporting on the news reporters and their takes/comments.
So we would not be covering the LA Times, but certain writers with The Times, SI, ESPN Insider, etc...
Sometimes, maybe many times, probably most times, in a critical, glib and sardonic tone.

We would not have to actually write much at all unless the poster wishes to make it into a deeper piece.
The quoted text would do most of the talking, while we just add our 2 cents.
The RSS feed would deliver the picture and some text as a new article that is hidden from view by most members but those authorized as writers. All accessible from the front end of the site, the poster would click on the article and hack it up to his liking while adding his contributions. It would then be accessible to all.

Once 'posted' to all the article appears on the front page and opens up to its own page when clicked on where it quickly becomes a conversation piece like a blog post plus.
The byline would look just like that of a newspaper, with members like Irish now contributing using their own name or a real-sounding pseudonym.
And under the byline would be a 'latest post' area that would scroll the latest few post from that article on the forum.
The posting of a new article automatically creates a new thread that is linked. Members who don't care about anything but their forums will have virtually no change in how they interact with the system.
For others the front end would have expanded social media interaction.
The forum 'latest post' feature will be at the byline. But after the article is over there will be expanded section with a block of running conversation from that thread in the forum. As well key blocks of chosen social media channels that run rss search feeds of content specific to the story you are basing your article around.
For instance if the story was based around a story Woj wrote on the Vertical. You would have a twitter feed theVertical created for that story. Either as a twitter post on Woj's twitter account or theVerticals, etc... Displaying replies by his twitter followers in real time.
Similar feeds can be incorporated using any of the other social media networks that are relevant to a particular story. So you could have our feed followed by twitter, facebook, instagram, reddit, feeds.

The areas of concentration will be what we are already doing on DSP.
The strongest would probably be Baseball with a focus on the Dodgers, followed by Basketball/Lakers and the NFL/Raiders. As well as a Cultural/Hell off topic sections.

Instead of google ads the site would be funded by direct selling.
Items that sports fans would enjoy and be the target market for can be sold indirectly through wholesale accounts with overseas importers. The customer places his order and we as the middle man then place the order with the vendor who drop ships it to our customer in a plain box. The margins there are 15-45 percent. Much better return on investment over time than ads.

Site can still be called DSP. Or we can get a new domain and call it lesssports.com or sportsless.com
Both are available. As are a number of other names that are shorter than DSP.
    Like for instance sportingloot.com, sportslooter.com, hellsport.com, ayesports.com, sportsfor.com, sporsche.com, sportsspecial.com, sportsfinal.com, sportsbae.com, sportscountry.com, sportsrags.com, sportsfine.com, feditsports.com, sportsdepo.com, sportbucks.com, deadsport.com, sportswagon.com, sportciopath.com, sportsbysportswest.com, sportsrev.com, sportswax.com, sportscomer.com, sportsmortal.com, villarbraunsports.com or DeeEsPee.com :D

Joking aside the idea is to become an online store. A retailer that caters to sports fans while also providing them with a social hub for talking shit and reading and commenting on the latest takes in sports while looking like the NY Times or some other proper news site with clean design elements.

With real-life benefits to contributors in the ways of credits to be used in the store.
As well as weekly store prizes/giveaways to bring in more users to the site.

    Today was a slow workday.

    Thanks for sparking my imagination.
How bout a weekly sports podcast from a couple of dsp members.
With all the same features of the previous site. But some of the writers might be high.
Selling custom team styled clothing, gear, equipment, but without using proprietary logos. .
Instead have items that are black with gold and purple trim as PG32, LA Magic. Get creative to get away from using the team names.
Stuff that is white with blue trim can be called Tommy Blue, Blue Crew, or Blue Dream, Blue Heaven.
    Start with shirts.

Definitely a yes from me. Like Diablo said, nothing wrong with you monetizing - we've all been floating along for free for years. The main thing tho - most of us are gonna just keep doing what we do. Most of us won't even leave the Dodgers area, so don't do this expecting much from your boys.

Also, if you have click-bait ads I will leave, create my own forum, and take everyone with me. You know the ad types "The 10 lamest DSP posters of all time! You won't believe who is #3!" And it has a picture of Juan Pierre who isn't even on the list.

Thats why we wont have ads but will sell shwag.
How bout tshirts of each member. Do you want a shirt with your logo that says MOUSY on it.
Irish can have a tshirt that says IRISH and has a drunk red faced irishman missing a tooth.
And one with DIBLO on it that has a demon looking thing with wings giving a homeless guy a burger.
We might need something with some art skills for that last one.
