LOS ANGELES — The Giants left their dugout quickly after Friday’s loss, escaping a celebration on the mound and a fireworks show in the sky. As Dodger Stadium shook with cheers, Bruce Bochy sat in the visiting clubhouse and smiled. He nodded at his laptop, which earlier had been used to pull up highlights of Japanese two-way star Shohei Otani.

“He’s good,” Bochy said, laughing. “I absolutely would play him every day.”

Earlier in the week, when it became known that Bobby Evans and Jeremy Shelley were headed to Japan to scout Otani, Bochy said he couldn’t imagine a player pitching and then moving to the outfield between starts. What changed?

Perhaps it was the tape Bochy saw. Otani throws 100 mph and hits homers with ease. Or perhaps it was the game he watched Friday. The Giants lost for the 94th time, with the big blow coming from a 22-year-old Dodgers star. Cody Bellinger’s blast was the difference in a 4-2 win, and the Giants don’t have a Bellinger, or anything close. Otani, 23, is a long shot for a team that very well could finish with the worst record in baseball. Still, he’s the kind of talent that could help pull the Giants closer in a hurry. He’s the kind of talent they haven’t developed in years, and Bochy certainly sounded a bit wistful as he talked of the power Bellinger has put on display.

“You call up a guy and he does that — that just doesn’t happen,” he said. “It’s a rare deal.”

The ninth inning of the Dodgers’ clincher reinforced that point for the Giants. They got a homer from Pablo Sandoval, but he’s playing only because Christian Arroyo — the Giants’ best prospect bet this year — is hurt. Ryder Jones, their 23-year-old prospect, struck out to end the night, dropping his average to .180.

That set off a celebration for Bellinger and the Dodgers. They have won five straight NL West titles, with three of the last four clinched against the Giants.

“Congrats to them,” Bochy said. “They’ve had a tremendous year across the board, and they’ve played great baseball. They brought some guys up that really did a great job for them. It’s well deserved.”

Bochy said it was not difficult to watch this one. The division has been wrapped up for months, with only a September slide keeping the Dodgers from clinching earlier.

“We knew what we were facing here,” Bochy said.

The Giants have two more against the Dodgers and then six more before a long winter. The Dodgers, on the other hand, will host an NLDS series here at Dodger Stadium. Both Bochy and starter Jeff Samardzija made the same observation, that the Dodgers will have a hard time cutting their deep roster down to 25 postseason players.

That’s a nice problem to have. It’s a foreign one right now for the Giants, who have a serious talent gap and no clear solutions internally. It’s no wonder, then, that Bochy has all of a sudden become so intrigued by a wondrous talent overseas.

2018 Dodgers/Padres series to be played in Mexico
by Matthew Moreno | Dodger Blue — 24 September 2017

    guzman.gif

When the Los Angeles Dodgers announced their 2018 preliminary schedule, it did not include details on a potential series with the San Diego Padres in Mexico. It reportedly was a possibility Major League Baseball has been working on in effort to further grow the sport.

Considering the Padres’ proximity to the country, and history of Dodgers players with ties to Mexico, the teams make for the obvious decision to head south of the border. The initial expectation was they would meet for a regular-season series in Mexico City.

While the Dodgers and Padres are still on track to meet, their matchup is expected to take place in Monterrey, per Marco Almaraz of La Cancha:

"The majors will return in 2018 to the Estadio Monterrey with a regular season series between Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres, from May 4-6."

The Dodgers previously played in Mexico City when they faced the Red Devils in 1964, and the New York Mets in 2003. Los Angeles also played exhibition games in Monterey in 1991 when they faced the Industriales de Monterrey and Milwaukee Brewers.

The Padres have been involved in all four Major League games ever played in Monterrey. They faced the Mets in 1996, and opened the 1999 season with one game played against the Colorado Rockies.

It’s possible the Dodgers will field a lineup — or roster — that includes Adrian Gonzalez and Alex Verdugo, both of whom played for Team Mexico in the 2017 World Baseball Classic.

Joe is probably one of those phonetic attempts at Joh, or Jo. Sometimes Cho. There is a history of immigrants taking on names that sound and look Western but also keep some part of their original last name, like "Louie" for "Lu" or "Loo".

And Hollywood or course is rife with actors changing their last names to sound less ethic and more "Mid-Western" to say the least.

Connor....cmon, everyone can take on an English given name.

Kok-Wy is probably his traditional given name at birth.

And I know....hee, hee, hee, he said "kok". Huh huh uh huhuhuh.

I'm down. The Padres can't have any less fans than they do in SD when we play them. I miss Julio Urias. That kid needs to get back soon.

    McCullough @McCulloughTimes·12h
Dave Roberts said he would have an issue if a player knelt during National Anthem. He referenced his father, who was a 30-year Marine vet.

Bravo, Dave. Put out all the crap lineups you want. You can do no wrong by me for at least a little bit.

FWIW, the original intent behind kneeling during the National Anthem was to show respect for the military.

    Original intent is immaterial.
    What is the intent now?
The flag salute thing is all about intent anyway.
And there is no question what the intent of the players was this weekend.

We used to goose step and stick our arm in high salute to the flag like the Nazis.
But as it is with everything if you are a slave to the way things used to be you will never progress.
Truth is everlasting, but it is like food. If you are not hungry a basic plate of rice and beans might not convince you to sit at the table.
But if you are very hungry that rice and beans are what is called present truth.
And present truth always trumps an old truth, no matter how strong a tradition that old truth is.
When a truth becomes old it becomes stale, dead.
And it needs to be refreshed.

Truth never goes out of style, but styles come and go and folks try to pull truth along.
Truth does evolve though, it has to or else the wrong people will know the truth.
And we don't want the enemy stealing signs do we?
And whats worse than that is an ally passing signs on to the enemy because he does not realize what he's doing.
So the signs have to change periodically. Or else risk the enemy knowing too much.
They still mean the same thing, but in spirit.
Literally, they may mean something else, at least on the surface. Because the enemy has to be kept out of the loop, out of touch. Because the enemy is a great copycat, it knows how to mimic and is the lord of all posers. He will learn how to look, sound, feel, and be just like you and become an expert in your own signs in order to best keep up.
But to those in the spirit, the truth will be self-evident. They will get the joke. And that is how they will know the friends from the enemies.
    That is their secret handshake/password.

This kneeling thing....it really was an issue fading away like Kaepernick's career until Trump started tweeting and mouthing off.

I'm pretty sure NFL and NBA owners are now saying "Gee thanks. With friends like these...."

That being said, those who are arguing that politics have no part in sports, and I just want to enjoy my Sunday escape, just doesn't know much about the history of sports. From the Roman gladiators, to Jackie Robinson, Kareem, the Munich Olympics, Jim Brown....sports and politics have always mixed together.

Why is the national anthem even played before each game anyway? If you want politics completely out of sports, don't play anyone's national anthem. Most of those people are fumbling with their hotdogs or their 7th beer anyway. Just start playing.

sports are a war of attrition
you have to know what side you are on
the trick is not to become a fanatic
once you become a fanatic, you lose
no matter the outcome of the game
    you already lost the war

So why not just play the team songs if this is a war between two teams.
