Could be the first of a couple of steps with Kemp ending up in the AL soon.

Well here are the numbers. Kemp is set to make 21.5 in 2018 and 2019, however the Dodgers are paying 2.7 of that for both years so really MGT is adding 37.6M total the 2018 and 2019 years. Out going is 51.4 in gonzo/mecarthy/kaz. So yeah it is a savings of 32.6m in 2018 but an addition of 18.8m in 2019.

So I can see Atlanta's angle in this. They pay more this year to get out of the bad money a year earlier.
As for us, do we have more coming off the books in 19 to offset Kemps salary. Or do we move Kemp as it will be hopefully easier to move 1 bad contact than 3

well don't expect any big trades.....

Rosenthal offers further clarification yet, as he points out that the Dodgers have paid the luxury tax for five consecutive seasons. Their penalty for 2017 was over $30MM, but if they keep their payroll below $197MM, their penalty will drop from 50% on the overage to 20% the next time they exceed the luxury tax threshold.

So as one who has been following Kemp since he left there is good and bad in play since he left.

The good is that he and Roberts have a great relationship
The good is that when healthy he still has pop
The good is that he can still drive runs in.
The good is that while healthy last year his on base percentage went up
The good is that he started last year til the hamstring problems started. He looked vintage at first

The bad is that he can still go through strike out streaks at times
The bad is his D is not good
The bad is that after losing weight in last off season he put it back on after he had his hamstring problems
The bad is he had a bad years with hamstrings last year

The good is that the Dodgers have a great medical and conditioning staff and perhaps most importantly:

Friedman has crunched all the numbers and knows when and how to use Kemp to maximize his output and keep him healthy. Don't play him on cold wet days early in the season, don't play him against tough right handed pitchers, give him time off etc etc. Roberts knows how to position him in left field and he gives the Dodgers a possible mid season trade piece to the American League before the trade deadline. Some of the things I have read elsewhere make me more inclined to now believe he will really stay in LA. Oh yeah the Dodgers have a great hitting coach who may have already figured out what he wants Kemp to do in the box.

The Braves had to move either Kemp or Nick Markakis
theyve a top five minor league player ready to start in the outfield. It was a given one of them had to go.

Kemp is gona be released..... and 6.5M comes off the books for Arruebarruena at the end of 2018. Hill's contract of 18.9 comes off the books in 2019.

Rosenthal notes in another tweet that the trade is “effectively cash-neutral overall,” but adds that the swap will put the Dodgers below the $197MM luxury tax threshold for the 2018 season. That will allow the Dodgers to reset the escalating luxury tax penalties, which seems to have been a significant objective for the club this offseason.
