Another MLB titan could now rival Yanks’ might next offseason
by Joel Sherman | New York Post — 10 minutes ago

The free agent market got a lot more interesting Saturday — that would be the free agent market next winter.

The Yankees signed CC Sabathia for $10 million. In one of the most voluminous salary dumps of all time, the Dodgers obtained Matt Kemp from the Braves for Adrian Gonzalez, Scott Kazmir, Brandon McCarthy and Charlie Culberson.

The moves better positioned the Yankees and Dodgers for 2018, but were mainly designed to drop the sport’s biggest financial monsters below the $197 million luxury tax threshold. If successful — and both teams insist they will be successful — the Yanks and Dodgers will not pay a cent in tax for 2018. But just as vital is that both clubs will reset from paying 50 cents on every dollar over the tax — which they did in 2017 — to paying 20 cents on the dollar if they go over in 2019.

That coincides with what is expected to be perhaps the greatest free-agent class ever next offseason with, among others, Bryce Harper, Manny Machado, Josh Donaldson, Charlie Blackmon, Clayton Kershaw, Dallas Keuchel, Craig Kimbrel and Andrew Miller highlighting a class that goes even deeper than that.

The Dodgers will acquire at least one more player — probably a star — because of what the trade Saturday allowed them to do in the big picture, but that player will not arrive until next offseason, more than likely.

Sabathia’s signing still gives the Yankees wiggle room to acquire another starter — a Gerrit Cole or Patrick Corbin — and yet stay under the tax. The Yanks have paid the tax every year since it was instituted in 2003.

The Dodgers now project to be under the tax for just the second time in the past six seasons. Essentially the decision was to take on two years of Matt Kemp at $43 million to get rid of most of the $47.5 million owed Gonzalez, Kazmir and McCarthy, all of whom have contracts expiring after 2018. Los Angeles is sending a few million to Atlanta to even out the dollars, but will still lower its payroll for luxury tax purpose about $23 million.

The Dodgers had tried to use the same expensive pieces plus have Miami pay more on Giancarlo Stanton as a way to get the slugger and still have a shot to go under the 2018 threshold. The Yankees, better positioned at that point to fall below the line, were able to land Stanton. After the coming season, though, the teams will be on even financial footing to slug it out for whomever they want.

Kemp is now to the Dodgers what Jacoby Ellsbury is to the Yankees — an unwanted, costly outfielder who they will willingly eat a lot of his salary to make go away in a trade. It is not likely Kemp, who was drafted by the Dodgers and is playing under the seven-year, $160 million pact originally signed with Los Angeles, will ever suit up for the team.

The Dodgers believed they had enough starting pitching to withstand moving the injury-prone Kazmir and McCarthy. To get Gonzalez to waive his no-trade clause, the Braves agreed to obtain the first baseman and then release him so he can be a free agent (during the offseason that cannot be done on the weekend, so it will come this coming work week).

Alex Anthopoulos, recently named the Braves GM, had been the Dodgers’ VP of baseball operations the past two years, so he knew the Dodgers’ situation and players well. Atlanta had payroll space this year to absorb the unwanted contracts and because they are all expiring after this season, it will be better positioned to spend on desirable pieces next offseason than if Kemp were still on the books.

In addition, the Braves get Kemp out of left field, where he was a woeful defender, and open a space for perhaps the sport’s top prospect, Ronald Acuna. In addition, health permitting McCarthy and Kazmir step into the rotation, allowing the Braves more development time with their impressive lot of starting prospects, and both potentially become trade chips in July/August. Culberson is a multi-positional piece who is known for strong defense up the middle, the ability to hit lefties and being a good clubhouse presence.

The last tidbit of the deal that went by on the crawl was "and Cash considerations from the Dodgers"... they had to pay money to do it and they could not get Miami and the Braves in the same room to get Stanton.

The jury is still out on your hero trade

as badly as kemp has declined
he still has the most left of anyone in the trade (sans culberson, who was collateral damage)
not that kemp will be on our roster by the end of the week, but still
personally, i not only view this as a good trade... i think it's fucken genius!
to rid ourselves of agon, mehcarthy and kazmir all in one fell swoop...
i didn't think it was possible
    just a great move imo

It is truly great as a salary dump but it's not great for us as fans if they don't improve the roster. Friedman gets to be a hero upstairs and earn his 7MM salary. Hooray for him and fuck us, right?

I thought about it and I’m going to enjoy these few seconds Matt Kemp is a Dodger, just for nostalgia. KEMVP!

agreed it doesn't help us immediately on the field
but it does free up a shit ton of salary moving forward
probably not friedman and zaidi per se, but i imagine guggenheim mandated that they get below the cap
i didn't think it was possible to unload agon/kazmir/mehcarthy, and i haven't been expecting us to make any big moves right now anyway
now if they're able to find an al team that will take kemp to dh -- even if we have to eat some of the salary or give up a mid level prospect -- that would be even better

TrueBlueLA says we’re ~$21 million under

If you move Kemp and get someone to take 5-7 million each year then you take even more off.

I can see Darvish getting like 5/120. That wouldn’t work considering I’m sure you wanna save like 6 million for the deadline just in case anything pops up. I wonder if they’d considering going an extra year or two in order to spread out the AAV. Like 7/140 instead of 5/120.

They are and they used to be more important. We are talking about a team that has excelled in the reg season without Kershaw for long stretches in recent years, so consider that much and consider his resume as a choker in the post as well as his back issues in recent seasons and there's just enough there to see to it that he gets less money on the AAV moving forward beyond next season
