The one statement that rang particularly true, imo, amongst the usual paeans, is that " he was a true American original".
And that is something to be, like a working class hero.

Horrifying. Really horrifying the idea of decent people getting reamed who can't/don't wrap their minds around the vigilance necessary to stave off the malicious crows. Even more horrifying when that involves spouses or family members.

Feel-good story of New Jersey couple and homeless man charged with fraud
by Dylan Stableford | Senior Editor, Yahoo News — 2 hours ago
    [IMG]
It was a feel-good story for the ages — a homeless military veteran’s random act of kindness and a New Jersey couple intent on helping him get back on his feet during the holidays — that inspired people to donate than $400,000 in an online fundraiser when it went viral last fall.

But prosecutors say Mark D’Amico, Kate McClure and Johnny Bobbitt Jr. fabricated the story in an effort to raise money for themselves.

“The paying it forward story that drove this fundraiser might seem too good to be true,” Burlington County Prosecutor Scott Coffina said at a press briefing in Mount Holly, N.J., on Thursday afternoon. “Unfortunately it was. The entire campaign was predicated on a lie.”

The three were each charged with second-degree conspiracy and theft by deception.

McClure and D’Amico surrendered to authorities on Wednesday and pending a Dec. 24 court date, Coffina said. Bobbitt Jr. taken into custody on Wednesday in Philadelphia, where he is awaiting an extradition hearing.

Coffina said that less than an hour after the couple’s online campaign went live, McClure texted a friend to say the story of Bobbitt assisting her was fake.

“OK so wait, the gas part is completely made up, but the guy isn’t,” McClure wrote, according to prosecutors. “I had to make something up to make people feel bad.”

Ernest Badway, the attorney representing McClure and D’Amico, declined to comment. An for Bobbitt did not immediately return a request from Yahoo News seeking comment.

A spokesman for GoFundMe did not return a request for comment. Coffina said that the company informed him it will be providing a full refund to anyone who donated to the couple’s GoFundMe page.

The tale of the homeless Good Samaritan and his would-be benefactors began in the middle of night last October, when McClure said she ran out of gas on a freeway ramp in Philadelphia.

According to McClure, Bobbitt approached her car, told her it wasn’t safe and went to purchase her gas with his last $20.

“Johnny did not ask me for a dollar, and I couldn’t repay him at that moment because I didn’t have any cash, but I have been stopping by his spot for the past few weeks,” McClure explained in her initial GoFundMe post. “I repaid him for the gas, gave him a jacket, gloves, a hat, and warm socks, and I give him a few dollars every time I see him.”

Inspired by Bobbitt’s selflessness, McClure and D’Amico launched a GoFundMe page with the goal of raising $10,000 to get him an apartment, a “reliable vehicle” and cover four to six months of expenses.

The story went viral, and the campaign raised more than $400,000 from over 14,000 donations.

“He will never have to worry about a roof over his head again!” the couple wrote in a subsequent post.

“She did not run out of gas on an off ramp, and he did not spend his last $20 to help her,” Coffina told reporters Thursday. “Rather D’Amico, McClure and Bobbitt conspired to pass off a fake, feel-good story that would compel donors to contribute to their cause.”

The net proceeds generated by their campaign amounted to more than $367,000, which was electronically deposited into accounts controlled by McClure.

Months later, their “pay it forward” story began to unravel over control of their haul.

In August, Bobbitt filed suit against the couple, alleging they were using the money for themselves and had failed to pay him nearly $300,000.

In an appearance on NBC’s “Megyn Kelly Live,” McClure and D’Amico denied Bobbitt’s allegations, saying they withheld some of the money out of fear Bobbitt would spend it on drugs.

“He wanted his fair share of the take,” Coffina said. “But the money was long gone.”

According to prosecutors, D’Amico and McClure spent the vast majority of the money raised by mid-March, buying a car, going on trips and hitting the casinos “hard.”

In September, police raided the couple’s south Jersey home, but they were not charged at the time.

That month, GoFundMe announced that it would pay Bobbitt the rest of the money owed to him. It’s unclear if the company did so, or whether it would seek to reclaim the funds.

Comerica Park stadium worker gets probation for spitting on pizza
Associated Press — 3 hours ago

DETROIT -- A food service worker at the Detroit Tigers' stadium who was fired after video surfaced showing him spitting on a pizza has been sentenced to 18 months of probation.

Jaylon Kerley, 21, also was ordered Thursday to take an anger management class and to not work around food while he serves his probation. He earlier pleaded guilty to one felony count and one misdemeanor count of food law violations.

Kerley didn't comment during Thursday's hearing. His lawyer, Carla Marable, said Kerley was "very remorseful."

Officials determined that video posted on Instagram was recorded Sept. 21 during the Tigers' game against the Kansas City Royals at Comerica Park. The pizza was apparently intended for a customer. Tests later showed that Kerley didn't have communicable diseases.

    well it is arizona...

Woman's racist rant caught on video
by Megan Johnson | Yahoo Lifestyle — 24 November 2018

A quick stop at a restaurant in North Phoenix, Ariz., turned ugly for one woman, who was confronted by another patron’s racist rant.

Lennys Bermudez Molina was charging her car by the Wildflower Bread Company, and decided to head inside to get some work done and grab a bite to eat. But since the restaurant was so busy, she asked a woman dining solo if the seat next to her was available.

“I said excuse me, is it OK if I sit here next to you and she said, ‘well, do I have a choice?’” Bermudez told CBS5. “At first I thought I didn’t hear her right.”

Shocked at the woman’s response, Bermudez grabbed her cell phone and began recording the outburst. Describing herself as “visibly shaken,” Bermudez posted the video on Facebook and shared, “I simply asked the woman if I could sit down next to her while I waited for the car to charge.”

In the video, the woman can be heard saying that she wants “the whole freaking nation to be white.” When Bermudez answered how that won’t happen, the woman responded “it will. You will be wiped out.”

Bermudez said on Facebook that she reported the woman to staff, and she was asked to leave. A manager of the restaurant later accompanied Bermudez to her car.

The restaurant’s founder, Louis Basile, was also interviewed on the news station and shared that he was “saddened and shocked” by the racist rant on the video.

“We really embrace the diversity of not only our workforce but of course our customers,” said Basile. “If a guest is uncomfortable in one of our restaurants, we’d like them to come to the manager.”

Despite the behavior of the woman caught on tape, Bermudez, who describes herself as a proud American of Puerto Rican descent, was extremely touched by the amount of people who have reached out in response to her story over Facebook.

“It’s really disheartening to experience that,” said Bermudez. “I don’t want to let go of the hope I have in people to be right and to do the right thing and that definitely was the wrong thing.”

On Thanksgiving, Bermudez wrote on her Facebook wall, “This week was a test like I have never faced. I am thankful for everyone’s support. #LoveConquersHate. Happy Thanksgiving.”

Pastor says hidden game room found in church isn't his
    KTRK/ABC Houston — 24 November 2018
    [IMG]
Firefighters called to reports of a fire inside a house of worship in north Harris County uncovered instead more than 100 gambling machines.

Crews were called to the 800 block of Turney Drive at around 7:30 p.m. Friday for a reported fire at the Word of Life Church. Firefighters arrived to find no signs of fire. However, the person who reported the incident said he was locked in by an electronic door lock. Crews made their way into the church, where they revealed a large gaming room.

Harris County sheriff's deputies were called to the scene, where they took several people out of the building in handcuffs. The sheriff's office said it was interviewing people regarding the gaming room. One person was arrested on an outstanding warrant.

Pastor Anthony Scott told ABC13 the church shares the building with another business. One side of the building is the Word of Life Church, and the other side is its own separate entity. Scott said that he and his church couldn't afford the entire building, so the landlord put a wall that separates the church from the other side of the building. He also says he has no idea who the manager of the other side is and has little to no information about the business they run.

An investigation into the game room, including its legality, is underway.

    Charlie Brown Thanksgiving labelled racist
    The Independent — 24 November 2018
    [IMG]
Charlie Brown has joined Friends and The Simpsons as TV shows to be hit by a racial controversy after a Thanksgiving special dating back to 1973 was aired again.

The episode features the cartoon’s only black character, Franklin, sitting in a lawn chair on one side of a festive dinner table. The five white characters – and Snoopy the dog – sit on different sides in what appear to be dining seats.

“Why is Franklin in A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving sitting all by himself at the table,” asked one Twitter user. “Man. Things that I did not notice as a child.”

The outrage came after the special – which is shown every year in the US – was aired by ABC on Wednesday.

“Not watching Charlie Brown Thanksgiving anymore, until they sit some people on the same side of the table as Franklin,” another critic tweeted.
The scene in question centres on an impromptu holiday feast – of jelly beans and ice cream – in Charlie Brown’s back yard. At one point, the lonely Franklin – who is clearly too polite to question the unorthodox seating arrangement – topples over in his half-broken chair.

For some reason, no one appears to mention that there is a perfectly good dining seat free.

“They give our friend the busted chair and won’t even sit on the same side of the table, more proof that Charlie Brown and his cohorts are RACIST,” a social media commentator said.

But others defended the classic cartoon and pointed out its creator, the late Charles Schulz, fought to add Franklin to the cast to stand up to racism in 1968.

The character was created after a teacher wrote to him and asked for a black child to be included.

Harriet Glickman told Schultz that something as small as him writing a child of colour into his work as the friend of a white child could make a real difference to race relations in the US.
