I want Harper too. I think we all do, or should, anyway. But they're just going to put Verdugo in RF and go back to the World Series anyway. Or at least that's probably their position with Boras. " Meet our price or not, whatever " Smh

We got a good prospect out of Puig.
It cost Wood and Farmer to dump Kemp for Homer.

Puig is Pedro Guerrero to me now.
Of course if he balls out with the Reds and Verdugo ends up sucking and Harper is gone and no big RF in FA in next offseason but Puig.. watch the dodgers sign him long term. Doubt it. I don't think the powers that be for the org like him much.
Of course the Reds can be sputtering at the deadline next season and trade Puig back to us for the stretch run alongside Scooter Gennet.

I still think we have a shot at JT. IMO MGT is playin chicken with Miami trying to get the price down. The Martin traded gives MGT more leverage. I would guess that Verdugo and Smith are gone. Would have no problem sending Barnes along, plus maybe a RHP like Santana/White/Alvarez. Run Bellinger in CF, Joc in LF, and Toles/Taylor in RF. Muncy would be 1b, with Freese/Taylor at 2b. Seager at SS. Turner at 3b. With Verdugo gone DJ Peters is next up, could have Judge type of power in RF.

I would but Bellinger in RF and let Joc/Taylor man CF with Toles/Kike in LF.

I don’t know about that. Above average, sure. But these guys have been in the business a long time to just now realize excessive platooning might be bad, and hitting to all fields might be good. Forget the not coming from a baseball background thing, but the moment you build a defensive plan that includes extreme shifts, why would you not think “what would I do to counter this if/when someone does this to me?”

They are smart in many ways, but out-think themselves in others.

Get Bryce Harper. We have a ton of money coming off the books next year. Sell the fan experience and excitement to the FO. How about a marketable player who isn’t returning from TJ or clearly on the downhill side of his career? How about a chase for 500 HRs? A player who’s upside is best-player-in-baseball over the next decade? A player who hits to all sides of the field better than anyone in the game? Blame ownership if you want, but the FO could get this guy if it was a priority.

I guess I just disagree with platoons and strikeouts being a legitimate hindrance. Boston platooned multiple positions all postseason too and Pearce barely played the first two games of the World Series, he just got hits when he got AB’s and Joc, Taylor, Cody, etc didn’t.

I’d like to see a more balanced lineup with more contact hitters because it’s more entertaining to watch, but I think turning Chris Taylor, Justin Turner and Max Muncy into the players they are shows that their approach definitely works, even if it’s frustrating.

Harper though is a no brainer, doesn’t make any sense to not sign him considering our only competition are two teams that suck in smaller markets. If the Cubs/Yankees/Red Sox were in I’d get it if we got outbid, but we have a clear lane and the only obstacle seems to be the luxury tax. And like you said, next year over $40 million comes off, and you’d still have Harper, Seager, Cody, Turner, Verdugo and Muncy for years

People keep saying this about the platooning, but it has been explained over and over again that it was not the plan, it just so happened that they had to do it. Catcher and LF were the only positions with a planned platoon going into 2018. Catcher was welcomed due to the grind of the position, plus Barnes and Grandal were coming off good-great seasons. LF was only cause of Kemp's emergence as a solid regular early in camp and Pederson is a well above average hitter against RHP'ing. Few teams are fortunate enough to have a good player waiting in the wings at every position and the Dodgers were quickly put behind the 8-ball in 2018. LF maintained a platoon all year, CF became a platoon when Taylor took a step back and Bellinger stopped hitting lefties, in RF Puig never bounced back against LHP'ing, at 1B as mentioned Bellinger stopped hitting LHP and so did his replacement at the end too so a third bat was needed, at 2B Forsythe did not bounce back after the promise he showed in the playoffs and hope for a year closer to his 2015-16 didn't happen then Dozier his replacement didn't do shit and catcher switched off of a platoon when Barnes completely forgot how to hit major league pitching. If anything that shows why they are a good front office in that they had pieces in place to weather that storm and still make it to the WS. Now that does not mean I am ok with this offseason thus far, but we gotta stop with the platoon stuff.

yeah you'll get a LOT of agreement from this board on that, especially NZ who carries a flamethrower at the mention of his name
he was a great story and then became a rich prima donna fuck in the end
i suspect he still is and hope he can catch the fucking ball at least
maybe this time around he'll even try hard
