    problem is there's precedent
much lesser players have been signed to long term deal
why suddenly the apprehension for two generational players?
    and...

"Given the game's annual revenues, which hover around $10 billion, their production, their age and past precedent, the $300 million-plus ask is by no means outlandish."
    Jeff Passan/ESPN

hear what you're saying and i don't necessarily disagree
but to pin it solely on the players, even agents, isn't completely fair

    fuck the players
    fuck the precedent
    this is some communist bullshit
if someone has it better than you it does not mean you are entitled to more
machado and harper both carry huge red flags
nobody wants them as the face of their franchise
its not collusion and even if it was
    fuck these players
they play basketball part time and make great money
    let them strike
    i dont give a fuck
the league has no need for primadonnas that don't know how good they have it

but it's okay for the owners to keep all the profits?
    nah man, fuck that
communist? a lot more to communism than being is paid accordance to your abilities
and it's a lot more than someone just having it better...
they have earned it, whether you like precedent or not
and while i agree that some might not want manny as the face of their franchise, i totally disagree on bryce
and fwiw... braun, tulowitzki, jeter, votto, pujols, arod were all given 10 year deals
only arod was younger and arguably as good/better than harper or manny
and there's been a ton of players given 8/9 year deals

so the games revenue hovers around 10 bill and one player should be given 300 mil of that guaranteed?

Realistically, only a few teams could afford high dollar rosters. The ones that can have decided they don’t want these mega contracts, at least for now.

If the owners want to keep a bigger part of the pie, that’s their choice, and they may only pay the piper if they put out a bad product year after year and fans finally react, if they ever do.

A strike will cause that to happen. So owners do have a lot at stake too.

Things are heating up with Harper. Intensified is the word I heard.
Phillies are the favorite, but word remains that nothing’s done yet.
    Will be a long-term deal.

If it is the Phillies, I hope Bryce has thick skin. Philly fan is not going to go easy on him.

I think it’s a 50-50 he doesn’t fulfill the full term of his contract and will either be traded or asked to be traded.

    so?
who cares that others made more?
    maybe they did more?
    maybe we knew less?
owners are the owners for a reason
yes they get to keep the spoils
    they make it all happen
you are not gonna go watch bryce harper and manny play at a local baseball park
not unless they are paid millions by an owner to play in a major league baseball team
let bryce and manny pool their earnings with a few other players and buy a team too so they can be owners
then they will say fuck the players too
because as owners they will no longer care about the players
so why do you care about the players?
you think mickey mantle cares about you?

My guess is that Harper, not to mention the teams with interest, wants to be in camp at the start due to the many many many examples of guys being dog shit after missing chunks of ST waiting to sign. This may have been a ploy by all the teams with interest in hopes of getting a cheaper deal at the last minute. There are said to be multiple teams currently showing interest in Harper and thought he Phillies are the favorite, there are at least a couple of other teams kicking around.

Those benefits were fought for long and hard over the decades. The owners would not have given them a dime extra if they didn’t have to.

Contrast that with the NFL, a much younger league and sport, where the pension and retirement plans were basically nothing until even recently, and the NFL is still stiffing some ex players on the CTE settlement payments. And the NFL is the richest league in the world.

It's a disgrace how the Players Association has largely ignored the pioneers of the game.

Sounds like things are finally ramping up in the Harper/Machado sweepstakes:

    • Padres are said to have offered a contract to Manny Machado somewhere between $240-280M over 8 years and it sounds like his agent has taken that offer to other teams asking for them to beat it as Machado is said to want nothing to do with the West Coast. They are also said to have made a substantial offer to Bryce Harper, though the terms have not been released, but it is rumored to be over $300M. There is no word if these are off the board if the other accepts. Report out now says that their offer for Machado is far and away the highest and is viewed as near "unbeatable".
    • Phillies are said to have offered a contract to Harper at 10 years and at least $300M and are currently viewed as the favorites to land him.
    • Giants are said to be very much in on Bryce Harper according to Heyman.
    • Multiple teams are said to have offered Harper deals in the range of 10+ years over $300M+. The Phillies and Padres are said to not be the only teams to have done so, those others have not been announced. Something fun of note. TWO private jets took off tonight from Las Vegas, one went to Clearwater, Florida (home of the ST site for the Phillies and Blue Jays) and the other went to Goodyear, AZ (ST home of the Reds and Indians... also not far from the White Sox and Dodgers site).
Based on everything that is coming out this offseason, I would not be shocked if Bryce gets somewhere in the neighborhood of 5-7 offers. Though Manny seems to have damaged his reputation incredibly during the playoffs.

I am fully prepared for the Dodgers to(annoyingly) not get Harper, but if it turns out that they didn't even bid on him then I may have a bit of a meltdown. Like, what even was the point of the top brass meeting? Did they think they were going to be able to move a whole bunch of money around to get enough room for him under the tax(not fucking likely)? Did they honestly go into that thing thinking on day 1 of free agency that he was willing to talk short term deal? Are they really willing to let their northern or lesser southern rivals go into the luxury tax to sign this dude while you, the far richer team with a ton of money coming off the books, just sits idly by? Something just doesn't smell right in this whole scenario and I am withholding judgement until a decision is made. Sign him for LF, then move Joc, Verdugo and Hill to the Indians for Kluber and call it an offseason(would never happen).
