Nice, long winter vacations every year. And no one will ever blame him for being home in October.

Big win for the State of California, as it just added another 40M+ to its tax coffers. Actually, by the time Gavin is done with us, it may be a lot more than that.

Reportedly there are no opt-outs in the Trout contract.

I have been fairly vocal about my hate of the player opt-out, and it will be interesting to see if this deal (with Harper's deal) trickles down so we see less player opt-outs overall. Assuming it's true that there are no opt-outs. Overall, this looks like a helluva steal for the Angels... as much as you can call guaranteeing $430 million to one person "a steal".

This is why it was imperative for the Angels to do this. He's their golden boy, and he probably sells more tickets than if they were actually winners.

Mike Trout seems too good, no too perfect to be true.

If a tree falls in the middle of Anaheim, but it's on a losing team, does the tree really matter?

I don't see the Angels leaving Anaheim with or without Trout.
Public money isn't an option in Long Beach or Tustin, the two sites they've had dialogue with.
They'll end up renovating the current venue and get some sort of interest in the surrounding land.

Darn. I was looking forward to hearing rumors of the Dodgers being "interested" only to learn we refuse to offer more than a 3 year deal to a generational talent and sign a .220 hitter with high K rates instead.

I'm bummed that the Dodgers won't have a shot at getting Trout, as are probably fans of every other MLB team, but in some ways I'm taking some joy in how this went down. Specifically with Harper's remarks that he was going to try to convince Trout to come to Philly. Haha, Bryce looks pretty foolish today, with this extension basically giving him a dose of STFU. Also, the extension protects Trout from having to endure a Harper-esque circus of an offseason. Could he have got more money in two years if he waited? Possibly. On the other hand, Mike Trout doesn't strike me as the kind of guy that can't make do with 430 of the big ones and would certainly give up the possibility of a few more to avoid that circus.

It does put perspective on the frame of mind both Manny and Bryce has vs Trout.

In many ways, that is why “drama” seems to describe Manny and Bryce, but “boring” is about the worse thing you can say about Trout.

It's hard to say for sure if he signed an extension now to avoid a circus, or if he just wanted to take the safe path and lock in the money now. I wouldn't say that makes you unselfish or anything like that, it just makes you smart. It makes sense for super agents to push players to FA, because if something catastrophic happens they move to the next guy, but if you are a player working with a sample size of 1 - unless you are unhappy, you lock up the money as soon as you can.

Odds of the Phils going big for one or two of Stras, Sale, Velander, etc. after this season have probably increased.
Wouldn't mind seeing extensions for those guys, so the Phils get left high and dry there as well

And of course, not everyone is fortunate enough to play for Moreno. I imagine if Harper or Machado were with the Halos, that they would've had sizable extensions offered to them ahead of time. Always knew Boras would take Harp to the market to do his duty, and obviously Trout's not a Boras guy. Machado only had the worst owner in the sport in BMore and then of course the Dodgers were too busy reveling in attendance numbers to extend his stay. If Machado had blown his knee out in the postseason his chances of remaining a Dodger would've increased, but it wasn't in the cards

To be fair to Manny, no chance in hell do you sign with the Orioles long term. That org has been a cataclysmic mess for YEARS. We complain when our FO goes out and only gets a front end starter/superstar, 7th-8th inning reliever and a solid under the radar potential upgrade at the deadline. The Orioles had a legit WS contender a couple years ago with a dynamite offense and shutdown bullpen. They just needed a mediocre starter or two that could get them 5 solid innings and instead, their FO got them bupkis. Machado was hitting the market no matter what and something tells me that the Dodgers didn't really step up to the plate woo him from testing free agency.

Yu Darvish, who has looked excellent this spring, just came out of his start with a blister on his ring finger. This will be interesting as there have been rumblings that the Cubs have been routinely checking in on Keuchel and Kimbrel, knowing that they are thin at both positions and could be interested in a value signing.

Seriously... how did they not go get Gio on a similar deal to what he got?

They have a 1B in Bour and a DH in Otani (when he gets back) on the Angels now.
Which means Pujols will be forced into a full time bench role.
Which also means a new era is about to begin in Anaheim.
    They got a new manager.
Angels starting fielders are pretty much all talented veterans that are around 30 years of age.
Not stars but guys picked off other teams that are professionals. Role players that can come up big in key moments.
Kinda like how KC went about it. Except KC did not have a mega superstar player like Trout.
If they had more of those role players on the pitching side like a Rich Hill or Ryu the team would be instant contenders in the AL.
You dont need to have superstars at every position to win. But you do need every player at every position to be pulling together to win.
Taking players out of a game or sitting them due to an analytically derived tactical advantage tends to be bad for morale/chemistry.
It may affect the players chemistry and the teams morale. Although this is lessened with good role players that are pro's and know whats up.
I just checked and they have 5 or 6 top 100 prospects ready this season or next. Which includes a 2B, 2 OF and some pitchers.
Some of those players are bound to come through.
Artie just has to open up the checkbook for a few more players.

Trout is the most perfect player in my lifetime.
Hey Trout would you mind taking the safe path avoiding the circus of FA and lock in the money now so you appear unselfish smart and humble by having the highest sports salary in history as well as the largest contract ever?

All while looking like the kid next door who 'just likes to play ball'

Hard not to like his hustle every play, heads always in the game, no commotion or showboating
About 175 degrees opposite Harper on many scales

At least that's how he's marketed.. and appears well worth the 12/$430M
