Because he hasn't apparently come down on his demand of 6 years and he's probably thinking somebody will do that long of a deal. I'm not s sure.

Kenley is probably the reason why the FO doesn’t want to do another huge long term deal for a closer again. He was supposed to be the closer that flipped the script on longevity for relievers and we’ve seen how well that is working out. The success stories seem to start and end with Mo

I think Keuchel is a real chance for them, but Kimbrel is probably a stretch. It sounds like the feeling around the league is that the Cubs window could be coming to a close this year. Bad signings, a depleted farm system, some iffy starting pitching and a questionable relief group all in what should be a tough division are plenty of reasons why. I would not be shocked if they are struggling near the deadline, they could sell off guys like Zobrist, Hamels, Lester and Quintana to try and recoup some semblance of depth in the minors. That roster stays healthy though and a couple breaks go their way and they are still right there in the contender bracket.

Yeah there's a reason he's the first 100% ballot. Best at what he did and was consistent as all hell. Out of that, I mean, Hoffman, kind of. Not as great as Mo but certainly not bad.

Hoffman was also consideration when I typed that, but I remember that he wasn’t all that ideal to have up in the postseason or when the games REALLY mattered. The reason Jansen got the Mo comps was that he threw the same pitch, plus being a bigger dude meant he should break down slower. Working out great.... at least Mo knew he needed to add that fucking 2-seamer so guys stopped sitting cutter.

yeah i was only thinking about a one or two year thing since thats what the brewers were inferring
no way any reliever is worth 6 years or even 4 really
especially one that has had his dominance declining recently

Am I the only one who wouldn't object to Urias spending the whole year pitching in relief? Given his innings limit, it could be better utilized over a full season in that role as opposed to maybe 15 starts and he finished.

Obviously things can change, we don't know when other injuries may happen that may force him into a starting role.

I am not a fan since if he is not starting, he is probably not working on improving all of his pitches, which could stunt his growth as a potential starting pitcher. I think 80-100 innings(I have heard that pushing him to 120 is realistic for him this year, so either he should be a starter or he needs to be a piggy-backer for Maeda and maybe start him at 1-2 innings every fifth game for the first couple of weeks, then lengthen him out 2-3 innings and then really unleash him after the all star break depending on how things are looking for the playoffs. That would be the scenario that I am most a fan of if they insist on keeping him in the pen.

With what has been going on this offseason with all the extensions, if the Kimbrel signs a 1-2 year pact at a high AAV with another club, I'll be legit pissed. There is no longer that golden carrot being dangled and there is A LOT of money coming off the books after this season at a position where we have tremendous depth. Go get him and reset the tax next season, if that is so damned important, when roughly $100M is coming off the books. The only reason it wouldn't workout is if he really is insisting on closing and neither he nor Jansen will budge off it. Still though, it does not sound like hs demands for a long term deal are coming down.

    • Brewers reliever Cory Knebel is dealing with a UCL injury in his elbow. They are hoping that he does not need TJ, but it now makes sense why they are kicking around on Kimbrel. With Corbin Burnes getting moved to the pen, they are a little thinner at the back-end compared to a year ago.
    • Paul Goldschmidt and Ian Snell today joined the ranks of players to have signed 5+ year extension deals this offseason.
    • Orioles IF'er Drew Jackson has had an impressive spring. The Dodgers decided not to protect the utility IF'er in the Rule 5 draft this year and it is looking like the speedster will claim a spot on the O's roster.
    • Another Dodgers Rule 5 casualty, UTL Connor Joe, was traded from the Reds to the Giants today. Like Jackson, Joe is having a solid spring and is expected to make the Giants opening day roster. If you have been watching closely, the Giants have been scooping up former Dodger MiLB depth guys throughout the offseason.
    • Brad Miller has opted out of his MiLB deal with the Dodgers. His spring has people believing that he will latch on with a team where he could get a shot to start. This pretty much means that Alex Verdugo is making the opening day roster.
