Not saying he’s back, but Kelly has looked a shit ton better the last couple outings after his blowup in Anaheim. The weird thing about that awful Kelly outing was he came away saying that he thought he figured something out in it AND one of the analysts said they thought they saw something as well(I think it was Monday), feeling that he thought that he was about to go on a run. Really hope that dude figures it out as that would be a massive boost.

I know baseball is super hard.
But I don't get how you can just forget how to pitch.
Even if he "found something" goes on a run, there is always the possibility that he forgets again. And doesn't remember for another 2 months.
    That terrifies me.

Everyone goes throw ups and downs. But he just forgets how to pitch. For long periods of time.

I know with basketball it can simply be a confidence thing or a mechanics thing
you can lose them for a variety of reasons
and you can forget a lot of things that have been second nature all your life
thats why sometimes we have to remember to tell people that they need to take a breath
we can even go to classes where they can remind you how to breathe in case you suck at it now

Yeah...he's not exactly at optimum these days. The K becoming more and more frequent.
Still got a nice BA, though.

Ups and downs are the story of Kelly's career. Hoping Honeycutt can help him eliminate some of the downs.

I'm convinced the fucker is a spazz.

He gets two outs last night, then completely shits himself against the PH Reynolds. Throws the first pitch to the backstop, then doesn't come close with the next three. Then settles down and gets the final out.

Talked to an old friend yesterday (former MLB reliever with several NL teams, including the '80 Phils). He was also a minor league pitching coach for several years. He feels Kelly throws against his body and will have a hard time maintaining any consistency with those mechanics. That said, he's blown away (no homo) by Kelly's stuff. He really likes what Baez has done with his career.

My amateur opinion........he may have mechanical problems, but some of those are stripped gears between the ears.

It really is that easy for it to all come tumbling down as players are differently in-tune with their bodies. He caught fire in the playoffs last year, so added adrenaline likely helped him out, also probably made it easier for him to lose what little quirk he may have been doing. That is the thing about pitching, what alteration in your mechanics, even if it is minor could cost you MPH's, cut, dive, etc... shit one mistake just one time could cost you your career. There is a lot more to pitching than just getting up there and throwing as hard as you can. One good outing where you did something different can turn around your whole season or even once again your career. Though like you said, just as quickly as you found it, you can lose it all over again *cough* Kenley Jansen *cough*

I'm not sure we'll ever see the lights out Kenley again. He's still better than most, just not what he was and likely not the closer the Dodgers need to end to Series drought.

Oh god, she wouldn't last two posts on this board. She hates Puig cause the Rockies announcers hate Puig. She knew I liked him, so she listened more about him and I would say that the local sportscasters never minced words for him. So she bought in that he is a punk... which I also never argued against that and I probably only solidified her judgement that his character is shite. Now for Verdugo, him gyrating those hips and dancing around the field already has most teams hating him when he leaves, so I just figured the local homers would destroy him... was not expecting Verdugo to go on a fucking tear though, so that is probably helping.

A lot of people have already chimed in, but I’ll add my two cents. It seems strange to just somehow forget how to do something you have been doing your entire life, especially when you have previously done it at a high level.

You mention baseball being super hard, but I feel like sometimes we really forget all the minor nuances that go into being successful. It could be the grip of the pitch, arm slot, release point, etc. Obviously there are a ton of things that can go wrong on the offensive side as well.

I mention this because there was a time in high school when I used to have an absolutely devastating cutter, that I just somehow forgot to throw after a year. It was mind boggling to me, but I always think back to this when I see guys struggling at the highest of levels.

Not trying to defend Kelly, but I get how it can happen and that it can happen again at anytime. Even after you’ve put a string of good at bats or innings together.

If he played on any other team Verdugo would be the new Parra around these parts.

In my opinion, he is not a top 25 pen arm anymore and I don't care what the analytics say(not looking at them). An elite closer can not be so susceptible to the long ball like he has become and since his slider is only ok, it is putting his career in line for a steep drop if he can't figure out a way to get that elite cut back on his cutter. Had he ever taken the time to add a fading two seamer, it would have likely prolonged his dominance, but for some reason he decided not follow through with those plans. Seriously, even Mo realized he needed to add to switch the look on his pitch, but Kenley is too good to do it? He isn't locating anywhere close to the level he used to, both his slider and cutter flatten out a lot when he tries to pump it up. Which in the world of his velocity now means he's muscling up to 93 , instead of it happening at 97-99 in his earlier years which was somewhat ok for mistakes from time to time.

I used to champion Kenley a lot as I loved him. His loyalty to the franchise can't be forgotten, but his personality is now getting in the way of the teams success. I wasn't mad at him for the 2017 WS as he had been a rock up until Game 2, but since that moment his career has been much more of a disappointment. The club's bullpen is struggling, they had one of the truly great closers available in free agency, it would have only cost them money and he said "yeah we can sign him, but he's not closing"... great teammate dude. So the guy goes to your most dangerous competition in the National League... GREAT. He is too damn proud to see that he has become a liability and instead of seeing this franchise out of the depths of a 30 year slump, he took himself over all others. Fuck Kenley Jansen.

What is wild to me is that Verdugo is not even in the rookie of the year conversation for the NL. Pretty absurd in my opinion.
