I've been spouting for over a decade that "Closer" is the stupidest role in all of sports. It was the advent of the Save statistic, and the money that came with it, that really birthed the obsession with Closers that we see today. Perhaps with the continued progression towards more analytics, pay days will no longer be reliant on that number, and the Closer role will die.

I'm with you, so much more can go into the decision of who pitches and when. The idea that x pitches the 9th and y pitches the 8th is so archaic and simple. The team that finally ditches that traditional concept in favor of something that is more mathematically sound and keeps opponents on their heels, will gain an immediate advantage. Fuck Closers.

    agree to a point
if say Julio was like this he'd throw a fit and say he wants to start
all of us in every walk of life have to put our pride aside cause it just doesn't work that way
no place is more evident than a team
its supposed to be about the ultimate goal

To want it to happen is one thing... but the fact that you want to see it is a whole other thing... definitely homo

Matchups, ballpark, rest... if someone just looks good/bad warming up in the bullpen - there are lots of things that can/should be taken into consideration.

I'm also a firm believer that the more pitchers you roll out there, the more likely you are going to run into someone having a bad day. I think every relief pitcher should come in with the expectation that, unless they struggle or look bad, they will stay in for one time through the batting order.

Everything I've read after my initial post confirms exactly what I wrote.
If someone throws a fit because a real manager * who tells him to do what is best for the team in his highly paid opinion and in performance of his obvious job requirements, then fuck his faggot player ass. And if it goes as far as player refusal on some grotesque level, then the suits should have him immediately take it up with Rabinowitz & Rabinowitz about his contract obligations.
    Thank you.

    * Not a manager who is adored and steadily elevated to iconic level simply because he pats players on their asses and handles "so many different personalities and egos"...
    What manager doesn't ?
The idea is not to win Miss Congeniality...it's to win a championship.

Perhaps, with virtually no competition in the division and home field advantage likely secured in the National League, Dave Roberts is trying to keep the peace in terms of "roles" and such during the regular season.

All we can ask for, I suppose, is that if we are in game 7 of the World Series and Felipe Vasquez or Brad Hand strikeout 3 batters on 9 pitches in the 8th inning, they would be allowed to continue into the 9th because they give us the best chance to win it all. If Dave can do that, he is fine by me.

Not adding Kimbrel to the roster because of Kenley's ego is all on the front office.

I'm not going to argue that the whole closer thing could use some re-thinking, but thinking getting the final three outs of the game is the same as getting outs in the first eight innings is wrong. It's a mindset and a lot of pitchers don't have it.

Dinosaurs played for the name on their front not the name on their back.
Yet they still ended up as tarballs.
Weather changes, you gotta listen where the wind blows.
You dont play for the shirt you are wearing, you dont play for laundry.
    That is out of style.
You play for the guys on your team playing next to you.
That is classic and never goes out of style.
Except that the team is no longer the organization that owns their contract but their fellow players in the league.

    Good job, kid.
Sorry your defense and manager are garbage.

Two shit plays by Joc in the same inning. Routine ground ball botched and a limp armed underhand toss from 15 feet away.
The pathetic thing is they are playing him at 1B because they don't have the balls to bench Pollock

Was Verdugo molested in rookie ball or something? Who looks in the mirror with that hair and ensemble and thinks "this works." ?

Joc playing first base probably isn't helping him at the plate, either.

I was researching this as you typed it. He's now 3 for 19 while playing first, with an OPS of .357. Small sample size, but something tells me it's pretty indicative. Roberts needs to end this experiment - there's no way Joc can be played there during the playoffs.
