needing 2-3 sources before going to print has been replaced by being first regardless of accuracy/validity
both my mom and dad worked as reporters/writers, which is how they met
they both eventually moved on; my mom to cbs, dad to public relations... but the newspaper business was their roots
my wife was an editor at a couple different newsrags before becoming a teacher
interesting @fsudog21... the wife and i recently watched all the presidents me for the umpteenth time
also watched the post recently too
i guess it's in our blood
really miss murray, malamud and others
when i was little, i only read the sports page
but i guess that was a gateway drug as i eventually read everything else too

Former pitcher, Jack McDowell, is alleging that Tony LaRussa headed a pitch-stealing system in the 80's when he managed the White Sox. They had a camera setup in the outfield at Comiskey Park with a light on one of the signs that batters could see. The light was controlled by a switch in the manager's office.

    no gm
an arrogant president of operations who says they don't need a gm
an out of touch, self-righteous, cantankerous part-owner who holds fans [or anyone who doesn't agree with him] in contempt
    fuck this ownership group

As a baseball fan in general, what angers me the most about this is that the 2017 Astros - and possibly the'18 Sox - have essentially nullified that/those season(s), because one of three outcomes are going to result, and THEY ALL SUCK:

    1. MLB sticks with these lame penalties and lets the Astros remain as the WS winners, in which case nobody that follows baseball with the exception of maybe half of their fan base will ever look at that team and think of them as legit champs.
    2. MLB will vacate the WS in the record books, so we'll basically have no closure for that/those season(s).
    3. MLB will award the championship to the runners-up - the Dodgers - and again nobody that follows baseball will think of them as legit champs.

As a Dodger fan, what angers me is that we had a real chance to win it outright and legitimately, but unless someone figures out how to turn back the clock, that was taken away from us.

    • Ummm, apparently this Trout HGH thing may have some legs. It's still a "he said/I heard" thing, but it seems to be getting some focus now.
    • Todd Frazier was on MLB Radio today. I missed it, but in summarizing it, Casey Stern said that TF said this cheating scandal is not close to being over with and that more/worse stuff is going to come to light.
    • Players in the know are supposedly too scared to come out in public with what they know as they feel that they would be black balled from clubhouses for it(snitches get stitches). It seems Fiers is a rare duck in all this, but I would not be surprised if their are MORE hit pieces(you are starting to see them already) about him in the weeks, months and years to come. Fans are understandably outraged, supposedly the players are as well only for a different reason.... feeling that the "what happens in the clubhouse, stays in the clubhouse" unwritten rule has been broken. I knew it was only a matter of time before this shit started to get spewed and here you go.

If Trout has been on HGH, this off-season has to be in the discussion for worst off-season in the history of baseball. Tragic.

And the fact the Angels paid a crap load of money for Trout and Rendon....this actually makes me kinda happy.

There could also be some element of self incrimination. I would bet my house that players both benefited and suffered from the cheating. Why expose you to a double whammy like that? People in glass houses......

I think this has alot to do with the initial silence. Teams, players, agents are doing a fair amount of due diligence now.

I am so on the fence with the HGH thing and I have been for years. I have spoken to a number of trainers and weightlifters that are not exactly against the stuff when used properly. It's primary benefit from my understanding, was quicker recovery times and helping the aging process. Whether that wear down be from surgeries, games day in/day or from weightlifting, it helped get you healthy. When used correctly in could be a great positive for someones health and well being. The problem is that then it starts to get down to the young or poor kids that don't use it properly, abuse it or get some off brand shit and that is where the dangers arise. I have talked to some pro athletes that wish it would be legalized as they think the level of play would improve(without impacting the integrity of the game), players would be able to stick around longer and they would have less wear and tear on their bodies. The issue is, from there it becomes a slippery slope as does this then become a gateway to other synthetics?

I am not as well versed in it as I used to be. I had read up on it when I was younger having my health issues and even had a doctor explain the pros and cons of it to me. At the time I think it was still fairly newish (close to 15 years ago) for the mainstream market, but the gist was that it was getting a bad rap basically from abuse and an over-sensationalized environment. We still really did not know long term effects, but the feelings were if used correctly it should help your quality of life. I decided in the end to say fuck it and walked away from the game as the drug was not cheap and I had no money. Naturally, a lot could have changed, but I'm not as against the HGH thing as some others are.

As for Trout, the word is he has a waiver from MLB. If he has a legit health issue and a Dr prescribed it, then what can you do? Also, if he is getting the exception, I am willing to bet that he is far from the only one.

Casey Sadler was traded to the Cubs for INF prospect Clayton Daniel. Daniel was and 18th round pick in 2018. He is a light hitting UTL IF and has done a decent job of getting on base and getting hits so far. It is an interesting return as the Dodgers farm is pretty well stocked right now in the UTL IF department in AA and AAA. Not saying it is a precursor to anything, but on the surface I don't see a ton of playing time for him unless there is a move that opens up a spot. I am also fully prepared to hear the words "swing path change" associated with Daniel in the year ahead to address his .379 SLG in two years of pro ball.

Or prior to the start of the season have the Dodgers and Yankees engage in a new World Series special event to crown the winner as the champion for the vacated 2019 title.

Loved Murray, but Malamud's "Notes on a Scorecard" was my favorite.

I don't think this scandal is anywhere close to done
just wait until spring training and the reporters start peppering them w questions
and astros hitters suddenly come back down to earth etc.
the drumbeat for vacating the championships of 17 and 18 is also getting louder

MLB issues a denial re. an exemption for Trout.

    By MIKE DIGIOVANNASTAFF WRITER

An ugly week for baseball marred by the fallout from the Houston Astros’ sign-steal scandal ended with the commissioner’s office and the players association forcefully shooting down speculation that Angels star Mike Trout has been using human growth hormone.

Trout, the three-time American League most valuable player and eight-time All-Star, was not mentioned by name in Friday’s joint statement issued by Major League Baseball and the union, which read, in part:

“Since the inception of the MLB-MLBPA Joint Drug Prevention Program, no major league or minor league player has ever received a therapeutic use exemption for, or otherwise received permission to use, Human Growth Hormone (HGH).”

But the statement was clearly a response to a controversy that flared hursday when NBC Sports Northwest reported an accusation in an Instagram post from David Brosius, the son of former New York Yankees third baseman Scott Brosius, who was the Seattle Mariners third base coach in 2017.

In expanding on Houston’s sign-stealing scandal, David Brosius wrote, “If you want to read something better, Mike Trout takes HGH for a ‘thyroid’ condition. It’s a loophole he found and the MLB doesn’t make it public because they don’t want fans knowing their best player is on HGH. But people within know …”

Brosius walked back his accusation and apologized in another Instagram post Friday, saying he was merely “explaining how there are certain situations in which actions that would usually be against the rules and considered cheating are deemed OK for medical or other reasons, thus not cheating.

“The example I used of Mike Trout does not stem from information from my Dad or sources within MLB and has no evidence behind it. I had no intention of this becoming an accusation against Mike Trout or causing the uproar it did.”

But the issue intensified Friday morning when Yahoo Finance reporter Daniel Roberts tweeted comments from a conversation he had with Cincinnati Reds pitcher Trevor Bauer about the Astros’ scandal.

“Trevor Bauer tells me Mike Trout has an exemption from the league for therapeutic HGH for thyroid issue, and that players know this and generally don’t care,” Roberts tweeted. “Says there’s a whole complicated process to qualify for such an exemption from MLB.”

Then came this tweet from Roberts Friday afternoon:

“Update: Bauer now, through his P.R. people, tells us that he said or meant to say that ‘IF’ Trout has this exemption, he has a league-approved medical exemption. Bauer clarifies that he doesn’t know whether Trout has one or not.”

Players, through their personal physicians, can seek to use substances on baseball’s banned list, but they must be approved by baseball’s doctors. The majority of therapeutic use exemptions have been for drugs that address Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

If the independent program administrator of the joint drug program granted a therapeutic use exemption for HGH, he would be obligated to include it in his annual public report.

But an exemption for HGH has never been granted to any player since 2008, when data was first publicly disclosed after the release of the Mitchell Report.

The Angels’ only response to the controversy was to issue a statement saying they “support the joint statement by Major League Baseball and the Major League Players Assn. regarding the therapeutic use exemptions.”

MLB and the MLBPA have flatly denied it. Not that they'd be allowed to say it if so because HIPAA. But even if he were, it wouldn't much bother me.
