Looks like someone just trying to make a name for himself. The style of that article (I read 2 paragraphs) is less about trying to sell a point or tell a story, and more about the author's ego. Not too much unlike sports writers like TJ Simers, or people who insist on picking underdogs to win the WS.
I understand what the writer was trying to say with his zingers. Hef made pornography acceptable to the holier than thou crowd....the CEO's and the American aristocracy. Before then, the privileged crowd did their thing in secrecy, behind the scenes, and with silent but tacit approval from the same aristocratic crowd that didn't want to be exposed as a hypocrite. But the hoi poloi couldn't partake. That was smut. That was pornography. That was prostitution. Well Hef just made it public so that when the crystal class could openly defile themselves, it gave the hoi poloi the excuse to take it on as well. Playboy, turned to Penthouse, turned to Hustler then god knows how many niches it all spread. But what I agree with the writer is that Hef made smut into a class thing....people exploiting themselves in a way that was "high class" vs the regular crowd. Not everyone was invited to the "Playboy Mansion". Even the name itself exuded exclusivity. Smut with class, but only for the rich and famous. At the end of the day, in my opinion, Hef just made pornography into a class thing, even a race thing. What legacy did he leave other than a rich old white guy who fucked around with a lot of very young pretty white poor women? That's not revolutionary. He just made it into an acceptable PUBLIC vice.
