Former 'SNL' writer Nimesh Patel kicked off stage at Columbia University for 'inappropriate' standup set

Comedian Nimesh Patel kicked off stage 30 minutes into set for 'inappropriate' jokes

Comedian Nimesh Patel took his gig at Columbia University’s “cultureSHOCK: Reclaim” event a bit too literally, apparently. The former Saturday Night Live writer was kicked off stage by student organizers 30 minutes into his set for jokes that were deemed homophobic and racist.

Columbia’s Asian American Alliance (AAA) invited Patel to perform at the annual charity showcase, which aims to provide a platform for Asian-American artistic expression and to break through harmful stereotypes. According to the Columbia Daily Spectator, “Patel’s performance featured commentary on his experience living in a diverse area of New York City — including a joke about a gay black man in his neighborhood — which AAA officials deemed inappropriate.”

Patel quipped that being gay cannot be a choice because “no one looks in the mirror and thinks, “This black thing is too easy; let me just add another thing to it.’” Members of AAA then interrupted the performance and denounced his material about racial identities and sexual orientation. The group gave him a few moments for closing remarks, but Patel pushed back, saying none of his jokes were offensive. He purportedly claimed that he was simply exposing the audience to ideas that would be found “in the real world.” Patel’s microphone was cut from offstage and he exited.

AAA defended its decision to give Patel the boot. “Patel’s remarks ran counter to the inclusive spirit and integrity of cultureSHOCK and as such, the choice was made to invite him to leave,” the group wrote on Facebook. “We acknowledge that discomfort and safety can coexist, however, the discomfort Patel caused was unproductive in this space.” AAA added, “We deeply apologize for inviting him in the first place.”

Princeton a cappella group won't sing 'Kiss the Girl' from 'The Little Mermaid' over misogyny complaints

Song from Disney's 'The Little Mermaid' called problematic and 'misogynistic' in wake of #MeToo

Daily Princetonian school paper[/a] that he and his fellow performers will no longer sing “Kiss the Girl” from the 1989 animated film The Little Mermaid following complaints that it promotes a message at odds with the #MeToo movement.

Daily Princetonian[/a] criticized the song choice as “misogynistic and dismissive of consent” because in it, Sebastian the crab implores Prince Eric to kiss a mute Ariel without her verbal consent.

“The song launches a heteronormative attack on women’s right to oppose the romantic and sexual liberties taken by men, further inundating the listener with themes of toxic masculinity,” wrote sophomore Noa Wollstein. “In trying to motivate Eric to kiss Ariel, the crab, Sebastian, makes use of lines such as, ‘Looks like the boy’s too shy,’ ‘Don’t be scared,’ and ‘It’s such a shame, too bad/You’re gonna miss the girl.'”" data-reactid="19" style="margin-bottom: 1em;">“The song launches a heteronormative attack on women’s right to oppose the romantic and sexual liberties taken by men, further inundating the listener with themes of toxic masculinity,” wrote sophomore Noa Wollstein. “In trying to motivate Eric to kiss Ariel, the crab, Sebastian, makes use of lines such as, ‘Looks like the boy’s too shy,’ ‘Don’t be scared,’ and ‘It’s such a shame, too bad/You’re gonna miss the girl.'”

offensive and violating ritual.”" data-reactid="31" style="margin-bottom: 1em;">Wollstein added that the Tigertones’ repeat performances of the song were an “offensive and violating ritual.”

Brown acknowledged the song’s problematic tone in his column responding to Wollstein’s complaint, noting that a tradition of having a man and woman kiss during the performance also raised concerns about consent. He did suggest, however, that the group could sing the song again if a more appropriate performance style was adopted.

“A central element of our ‘Kiss the Girl’ performance has involved our soloist selecting a female and male duo from the audience one by one, dancing with both of them on stage before encouraging them to dance with one another, and then requesting that they ‘do as the song says’ before the group promptly advocates for a peck on the cheek,” he wrote.

“Many of the recent criticisms of this performance reflect on internal conversations our group has been having for some time. In the last few years, we have taken intentional steps towards ensuring that audience participation is more voluntary and consensual. These steps have clearly not succeeded in guaranteeing total comfort for both participants or in obtaining continual consent. Performances of this song have made participants uncomfortable and offended audience members, an outcome which is antithetical to our group’s mission and one that we deeply regret.

“Because of these concerns, we are removing ‘Kiss the Girl’ from our active repertoire until we can arrive at a way to perform it that is comfortable and enjoyable for every member of our audience. We sincerely apologize to any of our past participants and audience members for whom our performance of this song was uncomfortable or offensive.”

    This is so funny.
So he was homophobic in 2011, apologized in 2012 and has not tweeted homophobic remarks for 7 years.. but these 'affected' uber left liberals want to drum his career out of business??

wait .. were the protests from white gays?
    or black gays?
or some other strain of LBGTQ rainbow?

So since when was audience participation anything other than voluntary and consensual? Don't like the show? Then leave.

"total comfort for both participants in obtaining continual consent" what sort of sentiment is this? Did we presume that ALL ART now must meet the lowest common denominator of "total comfort" for human consent? Since when?

Explain how a certain percentage of viewers were not upset at "frankly my dear I don't give a damn". Too bad. Be upset quietly, in the back of the room, some people are still listening to the show.

Also of note that this is DISNEY movie song that they are protesting!?! Fer cripes sake ya got nothing better to do than bkitch about a line in a DISNEY movie from 29 years ago??!?!

    Grow a brainstem already

    hypocritically ironic
maybe it's just me, but isn't a large part of the comedian's job to mock people
it's what they get paid for, and why we willingly pay to see them
it's like society suddenly turned into germany... no humor
comedians like kinison, andrew dice clay, eddie, chris rock -- and before them -- pryor, carlin, bruce and rickles made fun of any and everyone
i remember back in the 80's this chick i knew was disgusted with a sam kinison show she went to
she found him to be misogynistic and offensive
so you know what she did?... she left
she didn't petition people to join her in protest, she didn't ask that he not be allowed to perform... she just left
its like these punk bkitch drivers who wait for someone to turn on their turn signal, and then speed up to (try and) not let them in
ambulance chasers of a different sort, waiting for something that could potentially offend someone (and often not even them) and then calling for someone's head
kevin hart is a good man and (admittedly) has a lot more discipline and self-control than i
and where are the people to stand up and fight back in support of kevin hart?...
oh that's right, they have jobs and aren't completely consumed with seeking out faux wrongs and pseudo justice
    fucken douchebags
