i thought he wanted to play close to his redneck home Angels Emerging As Front-Runner For Oswalt?By Mike Axisa [March 24 at 10:25am CST]The Angels are "suddenly the front-runner" for free agent right-hander Roy Oswalt, reports ESPN's Jim Bowden (on Twitter). The Red Sox remain in the mix, though the Rangers and Cardinals are fading out of the picture despite Chris Carpenter's neck problems.Oswalt, 34, is reportedly willing to sign anywhere and is eyeing a midseason return. Earlier in the offseason he was said to only be interested in playing for a team close to his Mississippi home. Andy Pettitte's return to the Yankees for a $2.5MM minor league deal may have set the market for free agent pitchers coming back during the season, though Oswalt isn't coming out of retirement like his former Astros rotation-mate.The Angels have reportedly been seeking pitching depth behind their strong front four of Jered Weaver, Dan Haren, C.J. Wilson, and Ervin Santana, though they are said to be targeting out of options players and non-roster invitees. Oswalt at a salary similar to Pettitte's could be the bargain of the year.
What are you getting from Oswalt at this point in his career? Can he be your 5th starter and perform consistently?
depends on the team on the dodgers he'd probably be a 3 (ahead of lilly, crapuano and harang) he was below .500 last year, but had a 3.69 era, and a 3-to-1 strikeout to walk ratio imo, he's definitely worth the risk the question is will he break down
But if you're grabbing him to come in mid season and give your rotation a boost, or to be insurance for one of your other starters going down, like you said it could be worth it, depending on how much money he wants.
I don't understand this apparent anxiousness by the Angels for a 5th starter. Are their options within the organization that bad? I mean, their front 4 is pretty damn good, so I don't understand wanting to spend much more than minimum wage on another starter. Those first 4 will make a little under $50 million in 2012, which is about 35% of their payroll from 2011. I would think they'd want to find a cheaper alternative.
I would bet he would go to STL before he would go to Anaheim... NL vs AL thing plus he WANTS to go to Stl.
The Angels don't need Oswalts but 'need' is a mighty subjective word when you're spending $$ from media deals...
...and so do the Card's have excessive media $$ to throw around? ... it's sort of like Fox and to a lesser degree Time Warner, are using the hugely lucrative media contracts to choose which teams prosper in the next decades... is your team in a media destination? OK, here's a few billion. Oh you're in a sunny rich area? OK, here's a few billion for you too. No one advertises in frozen tundra Minneapolis? So sorry the Twins won't be getting a new media deal...ever... good luck signing those free agents now... Now if only Bud Selig wasn't bought and paid for and instead was looking out for MLB... If only... sheesh what was I saying...
It would be a good move. They need a steady #5 starter he is also a veteran would be good influence and help for Angels rotation
Gracias. I came here from searching up something to do with Yankees prospect and realized Burch who I know from a different forum so I joined
The Angels dont need a 5th starter they have Weaver, Haren, CJ Wilson, and Ervin Santana. it doesnt matter who the hell is pitching 5th, hell I could pitch 5th and we would still make the playoffs.
