Scene from underneath Chase Field: Dbacks spraying champagne in clubhouse, meanwhile Zack Greinke walked into the weight room alone.

    Poor guy.

    lol
celebrating because they won the play in game?
couldn't help but notice the difference in celebrations from the yankees yesterday (happy, but very business-like) and the d'backs acting like they'd won it all
reminds me of 2008 when we beat the cubs... and then fell to the phils, who we were heavily favored to beat
    hopefully they'll do the same
apparently zack is the only one in az who gets it

D’Bags to start Walker, Corbin or Godley in Game 1
by Matthew Moreno | Dodger Blue — 27 minutes ago

The Arizona Diamondbacks survived a back-and-forth affair with the Colorado Rockies to win the National League Wild Card Game and set up a highly-anticipated NL Division Series matchup with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Though, not only did it cost the Diamondbacks their ace, Zack Greinke, but also the team’s second-best pitcher in Robbie Ray. The southpaw was called on to pitch in relief, throwing 34 pitches over 2.1 innings.

“This is an all-in moment,” Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said after his club’s thrilling win at Chase Field. While Arizona lived to see at least three more games in October, they head into Game 1 without a clear-cut option to take the ball at Dodger Stadium.

Luvollo identified Patrick Corbin, Zack Godley and Taijuan Walker as candidates to face the Dodgers in Game 1. By design, Walker was left off the club’s active roster for the Wild Card Game. Corbin and Godley were included on it, but didn’t pitch.
    ALL.png
“We’re going to go back to the drawing board and come up with the best solution and best options possible,” Luvollo said.

Corbin went 0-2 with a 5.06 ERA and 1.97 WHIP in his two starts against the Dodgers this season. He allowed 16 hits, including two home runs, in 10.2 innings pitched.

Godley also faced Los Angeles three times in 2017, going 1-1 with a 3.93 ERA and 1.09 WHIP. The loss came at Dodger Stadium, though the right-hander only allowed one run on three hits in 5.2 innings.

Walker was 2-0 with a 3.24 ERA and 1.20 WHIP in his three starts against the Dodgers, with both of the victories coming at Chavez Ravine.

Neither Corbin, Godley or Walker have playoff experience. As for Game 2 on Saturday, Luvollo did not rule out Greinke or Ray potentially starting that contest.

Greinke threw 58 pitches in just 3.2 innings Wednesday night. Taking the ball on Saturday would mean starting on just three days’ rest. The veteran right-hander refused to start on short rest during his three seasons with the Dodgers.

Ethier, Pederson under consideration for NLDS roster
by Matthew Moreno | Dodger Blue — 2 hours ago

At the conclusion of the regular season, Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said the team gained some clarity on forthcoming decisions for their National League Division Series roster. With that, however, Roberts anticipated plenty of debate and difficult resolutions lied ahead.

While the bulk of that may lie within the bullpen and whether to carry an extra reliever or pinch-runner extraordinaire Tim Locastro, it also appears one spot may boil down to Andre Ethier or Joc Pederson.

“We’re still kind of deliberating,” said Roberts when questioned on Ethier’s outlook. “Obviously, we like the quality when he gets in the box. He’s done it over the last couple of years in his career.

“To say definitively he’s on the roster, we’re not going to do that. But we see him as a bat off the bench.”

Just like last season, Ethier is attempting to join the Dodgers in the playoffs despite missing the first five months.

In 2016, he was sidelined by a spiral fracture in his left tibia that proved more complex and serious than initially believed. This season, the veteran outfielder fell victim to a herniated disc in his lower back.

Albeit in a small sample size, Ethier was easily the Dodgers’ most productive left fielder over the final month of the regular season. He went 8-for-34 with one double, two home runs, three RBI, four walks and 10 strikeouts in 22 games, making eight starts.

Despite the success, Roberts previously eliminated Ethier as a candidate to fill a starting role. Whether it was for the remaining weeks in the regular season or playoffs.

Pederson lost the starting job in center field to Chris Taylor, and eventually a roster spot once the Dodgers traded for Curtis Granderson. Pederson spent one month with Triple-A Oklahoma City before rejoining the Dodgers.

“He’s done some good things,” Roberts said of Pederson. “Joc obviously can help us in a lot of different ways — playing defense, bat off the bench, can run. For Joc, right now, the role would be a left-handed bat off the bench.”

Pederson appeared in 15 games (six starts) after getting recalled. He went just 4-for-22 (.182 batting average) with a .357 on-base percentage and .273 slugging. Pederson did end the season on a positive note, hitting a pair of RBI doubles upon entering off the bench in Sunday’s game.

The Dodgers have until Friday morning to finalize any NLDS roster decisions.

Adrian Gonzalez to be included on Taxi Squad for NLDS
by Matthew Moreno | Dodger Blue — 2 hours ago
    taxxer.png
Beyond setting their 25-man roster for the National League Division Series, the Los Angeles Dodgers will keep a designated second and third group of players. One being a handful of select players who will travel and remain with the team despite not being active.

The others will report to Camelback Ranch and be part of a “stay hot camp,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. “Essentially going to Camelback and doing the simulated games, taking at-bats, throwing, so if something happens they’ll be ready to go for the next series.”

Although the Dodgers made the decision last week to shut down Adrian Gonzalez for the year, he’s set to be on the taxi squad. The players will continue to work out with the club and travel during the NLDS.

“With his history and obviously experiences, it’s only going to help the team,” Roberts explained of keeping Gonzalez involved.

Roberts did not yet divulge who would join Gonzalez on the taxi squad, nor which players were bound for the Dodgers’ Spring Training facility. The team may have a clearer picture after the NL Wild Card Game is played Wednesday night.

Roberts said the Dodgers largely had their NLDS roster in place, save for a few final decisions that are contingent on whether they will face the Arizona Diamondbacks or Colorado Rockies in the best-of-five series.

"The ripple effect of Zack Greinke's short outing: Torey Lovullo brought in Robbie Ray, the projected Game 1 starter against the Dodgers. He dominated L.A. in the regular season (53 K's in 31.2 IP) and having him for two potential starts against the Dodgers seemed a pretty backup plan to not having Greinke ready for the opener. Now neither Greinke nor Ray will be ready to start the opener, a big advantage for the Dodgers."

From a strictly baseball point of view, anyone who criticizes Luvullo for using Ray is not getting it at all. Whatever you have to do to get there, you do.
Then you go alternative mode after you get your spot.
It's like a battle in a war, almost. Commanders have their strategic/tactical plans...and as soon as the fighting begins, the plan is out the window.
You fight on the fly...use your depth, your whole force.
Unless of course, you trade it all away for Giancarlo Stanton.

Was simpler when I was a kid, many years ago...eight teams in the NL & AL then. If you were on top after playing 154 games and an equal amount of each team, 22 times I believe, then you won the pennant. If there was a tie, they played another game, for the pennant. When being the best after the season grind meant so much more han it does now.
Imo, it's a shit sandwich, like basketball is.
But greed, TV, expansion, and revenue sharing all caught up with the game, to the point now where the third best team in a division ( i.e. Rockies) could go all the way to the series and win.
I guess if you go back to those days, the second WC seems like bullshit. It does.
The first one is OK, as the the amount of teams has almost doubled since then, and three divisions, etc.
But this November shit now is off the wall, too. I agree.
And eventually, they will cater to whatever brings in more money, like the DH for instance, and the most perfect game will be the most diluted and altered of all.

If I were DR or the FO, I'd ride with Fat Joc. Is Ethier capable of a big hit? I imagine so. One of us could also win the lottery this month. Ethier's had his chances in the post, hasn't done anything of note in the postseason since 2009 ( other than being picked off of 3B by Yadi a few years back). Fat Joc, on the other hand, had an excellent series VS the Nats just last postseason and also did some good for himself in this year's season finale to make his case. His .357 OBP since returning wasn't bad either. Only way I don't go with Fat Joc is if the org is just done with him and is going to trade him in the off-season. Otherwise, DR/FO should be trying to see if Fat Joc can find a launching point from a smaller, but more versatile role than Ethier can offer. Guess we'll find out pretty soon, but Ethier should be splitting taxi fare with Adrian, IMO

Joc’s upside is significantly higher than Ethiers but man, you really trust Joc having a good at bat after the past two months? It seems like an easy decision to me to not have Joc on the roster and have Ethier, given the difference in at bat quality. Joc barely got any hits the last two months. I think like 6 hits in 70 at bats or something.

As far as having a solid spot AB, I'd trust Ethier a tad more than Fat Joc, but only because Fat Joc can be so mercurial. However, I wouldn't trust either guy a ton in general. As much trust as Ethier garners from fans, again, what's he done in the post season since 2009? Pretty much nothin. Ethier, in OCT, since 2009 has a .316 OBP. Obviously, it's a smaller sample size of about 60 plate appearances..still, others have grabbed the bull by it's horns in OCT and he hasn't. At some point the book is the book on a player and 11 playoff series is enough, IMO.

If they think Fat Joc's turning the corner, he could help in more ways than 1, as DR said there. And while giving Ethier the edge in terms of " AB ", also have to remember that Fat Joc's put together stretches of solid ABs himself. His .357 OBP in September is a good reminder that he could still work his way on base at the very least. We'll see what happens pretty soon with their decision, but personally, I'm over Ethier's meh OCT history. If they go with Ethier, prayers up to the baseball gods that he does somethin in OCT for the 1st time in a long time.

It was just last year that he got a big pinch hit single in game 4 of the NLDS that was followed by Utley’s game winning single and then in game 1 of the NLCS he hit a pinch hit Home run off Lester, in a game that the Dodgers obviously lost cause of stuff that happened later but still. As far as a playoff pinch hitter goes, that’s pretty goo.

MLB is investigating those fuckers for potentially stealing signs vs Colorado.

Arizona has always seemed to be sleazy.
