He easily became one of my favorite players as soon as I saw him pitch and the emotion he brought to the game. Even a few weeks ago you couldn't even be mad about him mowing down 14 Dodgers and shutting us out. The guy was that good. Just had an unbelievable passion for the game and for life; and I think that's something we should all aspire for. Sounded like a great person as well from all the people coming out with stories about him. RIP José.

i came up with a saying when my parents passed
probably not original, but it just popped into my mind
"i understand that death is a part of life... but that doesn't mean i have to like it."

On a potentially celebratory day in which the Dodgers can clinch and Vin calls his last game at Dodger Stadium this happens. So sad and so sudden like a bolt of lightning. RIP Jose!!!!!!!!

I wonder if the aftermath of this will effect the Marlins like Bias' death effected the Celtics?

    Brutal.

In a baseball sense their short term and long term future probably just went up in flames. But that doesn't matter right now. I'm just bummed out that someone who had so much life left to live, so much left to see and do, won't get to. Baseball just lost one of its brightest young stars.

And this the same pitcher that a large majority of Dodgers fans, including me, wanted to trade for for like the last two years.

They said they hit the rocks at full speed, boat went 30 feet in air, it ended up upside down, so it flipped over and landed on top of them, probably..

To feel young and invincible when you are anything but.

Very sad. And unfortunately a lesson on life.

Yasiel Puig: Fernandez gave me advice; 'now I've lost him'
by Dan Arritt | ESPN — 8 minutes ago

LOS ANGELES -- Yasiel Puig crumpled into his clubhouse chair and put both hands over his face after speaking with reporters about his close relationship with Miami Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez, the fellow Cuban who was killed earlier Sunday morning in a boating accident in Florida.

Puig had gotten to know Fernandez in 2013, when both were battling for NL Rookie of the Year honors, an award eventually won by Fernandez. They had dinner as recently as two weeks ago, when the Dodgers were in town for a three-game series.

"He was a very good guy and I also liked the way he played baseball," Puig said through an interpreter before the Dodgers faced the Colorado Rockies in the finale of their three-game series. "The way he treated his mom and his grandma, his teammates and other ballplayers."

Puig, who had two hits and five strikeouts in 11 career plate appearances against Fernandez, said facing the hard-throwing right-hander was the best part about playing the Marlins.

When he faced Puig for the final time in their most recent meeting (Sept. 9 at Marlins Park), Fernandez struck him out with a 98 mph fastball. Puig blew him a kiss as he headed back to the dugout.

Puig said Fernandez was the best pitcher in the majors behind Dodgers left-hander Clayton Kershaw.

"I liked to face him," Puig said. "We would joke around a lot, having a lot of fun. Sometimes, he would throw balls and I would tell him to throw strikes, and I think next time we face Miami and when we play baseball and he's not there, I'm really going to miss him."

After collecting himself in the dugout, Puig grabbed a Dodgers jersey with Fernandez's name and number on the back and hung it in the dugout. Puig is scheduled to bat cleanup in Sunday's regular-season home finale, a game that will clinch a fourth straight NL West title for the Dodgers if they can win.

Puig has batted fourth just three others times this season, marking a major step up for the right-fielder, whose first four months to this season were so tumultuous and inconsistent that he was sent down to the minors for all of August, only to return as a more disciplined player and better teammate. Puig credited Fernandez with giving him a sincere pep talk.

"When we were in Miami, he constantly gave me advice about how to better myself," Puig said. "Now, I lost him."

Puig tearfully recalls his friend Fernandez
Dodgers outfielder, Marlins pitcher bonded by Cuban heritage
    by Ken Gurnick | MLB.com — 91 minutes ago
    [IMG]
LOS ANGELES -- A distraught Yasiel Puig wiped away tears as he spoke about Miami Marlins pitcher and fellow Cuban Jose Fernandez, who was killed on Sunday in a boating accident.

"He was a very, very close friend of mine," Puig said in the Dodgers clubhouse before their potential division-clinching game against Colorado.

"He was one of the first people I [knew] here, and I was thinking just a couple of weeks ago we were having dinner in Miami: He was a very good guy and I also liked the way he played baseball, the way he treated his mom, his grandma, his teammates and other ballplayers like myself."

Puig said he enjoyed facing Fernandez. When Fernandez threw seven scoreless innings against the Dodgers in Miami earlier this month, Puig was sent up to pinch-hit. When he got in the box, Puig smiled and blew Fernandez a kiss. Fernandez, after some friendly trash talking, blew fastballs past Puig for his 14th and final strikeout of the game.

"I think after [Clayton] Kershaw, he was the best pitcher in the big leagues," Puig said. "I liked to face him, we joked around a lot, had a lot of fun. Sometimes he would throw balls, I would tell him to throw strikes. The next time we play Miami, it won't be the same.

"That was the best part about playing in Miami, facing him -- especially when people came to see him and me play there. We were players and it's definitely one thing I was looking forward to every time I was there."

Puig said he met Fernandez in 2013, "when I got called up and we were battling for the Rookie of the Year (Fernandez won, Puig was second). That struck a friendship and we stayed friends in the offseason."

Puig, who lives in Miami in the offseason, said Fernandez was a friend and confidant.

"He would give me advice about how to prepare myself, and now I lost him," he said.

Manager Dave Roberts said he asked Puig if he wanted to be taken out of Sunday's lineup in the wake of the tragic news, but Puig told him he wanted to play.

To honor his friend, Puig hung a Dodgers jersey with "Fernandez" and "16" in the Dodgers dugout.

Dodgers outfielder Enrique Hernandez, who has family members from Cuba, was a teammate of Fernandez with the Marlins in 2014.

"My grandpa, he's in Puerto Rico, has been out of Cuba for over 40 years and the same way he talks about Yasiel he talks about Jose," said Hernandez. "To have an effect like that on an entire country and sport just shows what kind of talent and person he was. My grandpa said it was amazing to watch, that one kid could just paralyze an entire country when he pitched. The country stopped and watched."
