so you just want to play huh? well then maybe you could remember how to play bkitch can't hardly wait for the inevitable dave stewart "poor matt" rant... Matt Kemp, benched by Dodgers: "I just want to play, man" by Aaron Gleeman | NBC Hardball Talk -- 4 hours agoBenched yesterday for a fourth straight game, Dodgers outfielder Matt Kemp told Steve Dilbeck of the Los Angeles Times: "I just want to play, man." Dodgers manager Don Mattingly has been mixing and matching outfielders all season because he has Kemp, Yasiel Puig, Carl Crawford, and Andre Ethier to play and only three spots in which to play them, but Kemp is the first guy in that group to sit out four consecutive games. He's definitely been benched and Mattingly has cited his poor defense in center field as a big reason, although there's always the option of shifting Kemp to a corner spot to keep his bat in the lineup considering he has a higher OPS than Crawford or Ethier. And of course the fact that Kemp has a $160 million contract further complicates matters. It sounds like Crawford and Kemp may form a quasi-platoon in left field, which is a helluva way to spend $300 million. And in the meantime Ethier is Mattingly's choice to start in center field despite the fact that he's very stretched defensively there. Sometimes having tons of money and tons of outfielders isn’t such a good thing. __
not right now he isn't. i think bums pointed out that this could be a prelude to a trade. can't risk him getting broken again.
they're working on moving him to LF..that's what was reported by yahoo, so there you have it. i hope this means Ethier is eventually getting the boot and Joc is on the way up to play center. they can get that " Ethier is the answer " bullshit outta my face.
They threw Ethier in CF the day Kemp got hurt last year and Kemp needs 5 days to learn an easier position? Not buying that. Were talking about a position that Mark Trumbo and Jason Kubel pretend to play sometimes
totally agree there's more to this than we're privy too either a potential trade brewing or disciplinary reasons
I think he's hurting us more in centerfield defensively than anything. His hitting over Ethier doesn't make up for the now glaring gap in defensive capabilities. I think he was ranked as the worse defensive CFer in the majors in a recent UZR study (not 100% sure, but he was pretty fucking low.) Same thing with the new Cuban who's name I will never actually spell correctly. Hanley's bat is a HUGE fucking upgrade over him, but his work at SS in the last couple of games narrows the gap between Hanley's horrendous fielding and the need for his bat. The 90's are over, defense matters more than ever. These guys need to work on it harder and improve, or move to corner spots ASAP.
i remember saying there was a trade brewing when Mattingly first benched Kemp right after they came out and said " Kemp will start from here on out ". Kemp to Seattle, Boston, or Baltimore. any outfielder can play wall-ball in Boston
hell, personally..i don't know that i want Hanley @ 3B either. i mean i'm fine with the Uribe to Seager plan. how's Hanley to 3B gonna serve us in a positive manner defensively? for me...deal Kemp and cash for somethin useful, deal Hanley to NYY for somethin useful, and deal Ethier for whatever. i'm actually OK with Crawford in certain areas..his range in LF and propensity to make big plays over there for 1 and he's also been nails in the 2 spot for us, .348/.348 slash..he can go 1st to 3rd or 1st to home. it'll be hardest to find a deal for him anyway. keep him around. occasional pop too..he's been a big time playoff performer in his career.
Kemp has potential to regain form, at least in comparison to Ethier and Crawford. or am I missing something?
that's exactly what i'm hoping opposing teams are thinking. come and get him. come and get all of McCourt's big contract guys.
i keep hearing that Mattingly made this decision because Ethier's better than Kemp in CF defensively, soooo..yea, i wouldn't be so sure if i were you.
