This summer there will be a lot of eyes on the Los Angeles Lakers. The franchise has positioned themselves very well with two max-level free agency slots, as well as two draft picks and a young core of players that showed a ton of potential in winning 35 games, their most since 2013. It is that promise on the roster combined with the salary cap room that has many believing that this is finally the offseason the Lakers sign a big-name free agent. Because the team has struck out in the past on the likes of LaMarcus Aldridge and Carmelo Anthony however, there are still some concerns, and with good reason. One current All-Star believes that is due to change soon. An unnamed player told Lee Jenkins of Sports Illustrated why he believes the Lakers will make a notable signing: “They’ll get somebody soon,” says an All-Star due to hit free agency in the near future. “They play hard. They play together. They know their role. And, most important, they’re in Los Angeles.”

Well sourced Camello on Kawhi/Lakers Lakers should pursue Kawhi Leonard…but not in a trade By Chris Camello (@Chris_Camello) As if the summer of 2018 needed anymore intrigue for the Los Angeles Lakers with the rumors and desires of adding a star like LeBron James and/or Paul George, yet another dynamic has been added to their ever-thickening plot. There have been recent reports that the Lakers also have interest in disgruntled San Antonio Spurs All-Star Kawhi Leonard. While Leonard is set to be a free agent in the summer of 2019, many believe the Spurs front office could shop him around this offseason. The relationship between Leonard and the organization has deteriorated due Leonard’s mistrust of how the rehab of his quadriceps injury from last year has been handled. As far as the Lakers are concerned, landing a King James or a PG13 are still Plans a and B for Magic Johnson and Rob Pelinka, but adding a Plan C like Leonard to that scenario wouldn’t be a bad idea. Leonard has established himself as one of the best two-way players in the game. He is a two-time Defensive Player of the Year, a Finals MVP, and an NBA champion. He’s also become one of the great scorers in the league averaging a career-high 25 pointer per game a season ago. Working out with Kobe Bryant certainly had a positive effect on his game. Now he has a chance to be closer to the Mamba if he needs him. Not to mention he is a Los Angeles native. The question is do they go after him via a trade this summer and part ways with two of their young bucks like Kyle Kuzma, Josh Hart, Brandon Ingram, or even Lonzo Ball. Or do they once again wait until he becomes a free agent and make an all-out pursuit next summer. Sources have confirmed the mutual interest between Leonard and the Lakers, however, they feel the Lakers shouldn’t mortgage their current and future assets to acquire him. If the Lakers make a deal with the Spurs and lose key pieces in order to get Leonard, he won’t be surrounded by much talent, especially if they strike out on getting LeBron or George. He wouldn’t sign an extension, because he would want to keep his options open and could end up leaving the Lakers after the 2019 season. Sound familiar? (see Dwight Howard 2013). The Lakers should keep in touch with The Claw but don’t make any hasty moves until next summer. If another team trades for him, treat it as the George situation. Prepare a great free agent pitch when his contract is up and put yourself in a situation where if you don’t sign him at least you still have the kids to keep developing. Getting Leonard is definitely intriguing and no doubt would make the Lakers better, just not through a trade.
Sign Randle, sign one out of the two big names this offseason, then do something with Deng, trade any other contracts on the team by then, then sign Kawhi or Klay the following year.

LA is a region, like Rube said. As people who live here, we segregate ourselves based on which neighborhoods and surrounding cities we are from. The rest of the country doesn't give a crap about the difference between places like Anaheim and Northridge. Northridge is in the city proper and Anaheim is in "out in the OC". But they're basically the same distance from DTLA. So why do we care? Identity geography I guess. I agree, though... Once you start talking about San Bernardino and Riverside County, you're probably pushing it
