Well, I no longer want to slap the hell out of Dwight for being in the dunk contest. Hell, I hope he pulls out a vintage Kobe #8 jersey and wins that SOB. Laker nation needs it. Officially a standing 8 count today

A buddy texts me this morning, "Did you hear the news affecting the Laker family?" I figured a joke was coming. "Brace yourself," was the next text. Now I really thought he was joking, but a small part of me feared that maybe Kareem suffered a heart attack or Jeannie got in a car wreck or something.

"Kobe died in a helicopter crash." And I immediately knew there was 0% chance he was joking. He's not a Laker fan but has way too much class to do that. And since that moment, I've had knots in my stomach.

As a child, I had idols. I would watch them perform and at times fantasize I was them. Kareem and Magic and Cey were a few. As an adult, I no longer could idolize athletes, or celebrities in general. Instead of idolization, my feelings towards them became that of "respect." I would respect them for their skills or work ethic or ability to do things that nobody had done before them. And of all the favorite athletes of my grown-up self, I respected none more than Kobe Bryant. Sure, he was a polarizing figure. He cheated on his wife. He played a role in the Shaq-Kobe Laker dynasty coming to an end. He took a lot of shots. And yet during that time, the Lakers won five championships. He showed us what a will to constantly improve was all about, how to go for the jugular and never let up. His hunger for success never waned. He was blessed with physical skills, but certainly not more than many of his contemporaries. He wasn't the biggest, the fastest, or the strongest on the court. He didn't possess Dr. J's vertical or Jordan's hand size or Magic's court vision. But he had that fire that few (Jordan excepted) have ever shown. While Shaq let his weight balloon during the offseason and was adamant that rehab should be on company time, and Howard wanted to smile and joke and make friends on the court, Kobe had a single purpose every day of his career. Just be better than everyone else at everything he did. And for that, I always had the highest respect for the man.

I told my wife that this loss to LA is on par with Ayrton Senna being killed in 1994 to Brazil.

    .... and she got it.

I read the news on my phone and dropped it. Instant queasiness, a huge lump in my throat and tears. He was a hero. He was a warrior, he was a champion, he made LA great again. He was the closest thing we will probably ever see to Jordan on a basketball court.

I'll never forget the day I saw an old obscure video in which Kobe said upon entering the draft, "I'm taking my talents to the NBA" and I IMMEDIATELY forgave LeBron's perceived douchiness from that ESPN decision show. It was an homage to Kobe and I've never once heard LeBron reference it.... out of RESPECT! LeBron became a true Laker at that very moment and I have cheered for him with 100% full Laker fan passion ever since.

Kobe was on a path to being an even greater ambassador of many things to the world. There was kindness and good pouring out of him all the time.

    Un. Fucking. Believable.

I would bet that it was Kobe who told him to keep going.

Yesterday was a Joe Frazier left hook gut punch. Still can't believe it.

When I think of Kobe, his unparalleled work ethic and determination comes to mind.

Nothing measures up to the tragedy of what happened.

But all of the "journalists", braindead sports talk hosts and elites trying to signal how devastated they are (or how much they knew him) will be close.

I look forward to keeping the radio off.

    Rest in peace.

They had Ramona Shelborne on the local news last night doing just this. It was disgusting.
She was acting like they were besties that babysat each others kids, went to BBQs, had bowling night together, etc.

yeah mom and I were watching it for a few hours and then it just starts getting lame
why do they insist on a stupid chick to talk w Horry and Worthy?
would still like to hear Shaq and Phil on camera and the West interview w Jim Hill was crushing
but the fans rushing out to the crash site and retarded interviews w them is tedious
I believe the charred cadavers are still up on that hill
lets all grieve and just stay silent
went to Joanns and bought some purple material and cut it into arm/wrist bands
if anyone asks me I'll have more in my pocket
woke up this morning and was overcome thinking about how his surviving family must feel
    so awful
