Roberts confirms first 4 rotation spots; Urias a long shot for 5th
by Eric Stephen | True Blue LA — 3 hours ago

PHOENIX -- Dodgers manager Dave Roberts on Thursday morning named his first four starting pitchers in the rotation, with the final few weeks of spring training camp devoted to the race for the fifth starter, a race which includes top prospect Julio Urias as a long shot.

In other words, just about everything we talked about on Wednesday.

"As it lines up, we're looking at Kersh, [Scott] Kazmir, [Kenta] Maeda and then [Alex] Wood," Roberts said. "Then we'll figure out that last spot."

Wood, who was scratched on Saturday with left forearm soreness, gets the start for the Dodgers on Thursday against the Royals, and is expected to last four innings or about 60 pitches.

The Dodgers need a fifth starter in their fifth game of the season, on April 8, but an off day on April 11 gives them the opportunity to do some maneuvering to get an extra reliever or position player in the mix for six games if they so choose.

"We are going to break camp with a fifth starter," Roberts confirmed. "There are a couple days off too, that we may use."

Mike Bolsinger, Brandon Beachy and Zach Lee are the three candidates for the fifth starter spot. Though Beachy isn't currently on the 40-man roster, all three have options should the Dodgers decide to use multiple pitchers in the role in April. But Roberts wouldn't rule out Urias just yet, based on talent alone.

"Obviously he's a special pitcher. You're looking at pitch counts, what's good for him, what's good for the organization. I think him being around these major league pitchers and major league coaches has been invaluable. You have Greg Maddux watching every bullpen he throws," Robert said. "He's in the mix, but we are definitely very aware of not rushing him."

Urias, just 19, pitched just 80⅓ innings in 2015, and lasted six innings only five times. Ideally, the first part of his 2016 season would be spent continuing to develop in the minors and gradually pitch deeper into games.

"It's smart for us to consider it, but he's got to be really good. As polished as he is, he's not a finished product," Roberts said. "But he's special."

Very good outing by Alex Wood today so I guess it was a very light tightness, lol. What is up with our resident Amish look alike JP Howell!!! Wonder why Ross Stripling hasn't been mentioned as potential for the 5th spot? 2 innings,no hits, 4 K's today. Louis Coleman former Royal also impressive so far with 5 scoreless innings with a .40 WHIP and 8 K's.

Does anybody think Julio U in the 5 spot (or any spot) now is asking for trouble?

Urias, De Leon and 5 others sent to Minor League camp
by Matthew Moreno | Dodger Blue — 23 minutes ago

The Los Angeles Dodgers announced a second round of Spring Training roster cuts on Thursday afternoon, sending seven players to Minor League camp.

Micah Johnson, Yaisel Sierra, Ross Stripling and Ian Thomas were optioned, while Jose De Leon, Julio Urias and Jack Murphy were reassigned.

Johnson, who the Dodgers acquired in a three-team trade last December with the Chicago White Sox and Cincinnati Reds, played in 13 Cactus League games, playing 12 games at second base, including five starts.

Johnson batted .345/.345/.379 (10-for-29) with one double, two RBIs, four runs scored, four strikeouts and two stolen bases. In 36 games with the White Sox last season, Johnson batted .230/.306/.270 with four doubles.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts spoke highly of Johnson’s speed and athleticism earlier in camp, calling him a ‘dynamic player.’ Sierra was a late arrival as his signing to a six-year contract wasn’t made official until Feb. 21.

Sierra then endured paperwork issues and didn’t throw his first bullpen session until March. Stripling threw two scoreless innings on Thursday in the latest of a small string of relief appearances.

Stripling allowed just one hit, walked three and totaled six strikeouts over six innings (three games). Thomas also put together three scoreless relief appearances, collecting three strikeouts in three innings.

De Leon entered Spring Training as one of the more intriguing players who received a non-roster invitation. A 24th-round pick in the 2013 draft, De Leon was ranked the No. 5 right-handed prospect in the Minors by MLB.com.

He struck out the side in his Spring Training debut, though struggled a bit in his two games that followed. De Leon allowed two runs in two innings pitched against the Oakland Athletics, and three runs in two innings to the White Sox.

Thomas was used in three Spring Training games, throwing one inning each time. He allowed just one hit and had four strikeouts. Last season, he tossed a total of 18 innings in nine appearances, including one start.

Thomas finished 1-1 with a 4.00 ERA, 2.86 FIP, 1.22 WHIP, 18 strikeouts and six walks over the nine games. Meanwhile, Murphy batted .167/.545/.333 in limited action over eight games with the Dodgers this spring.

Like De Leon, Urias also struck out the side in his first inning of work. He battled groin soreness earlier in camp, which forced him to miss a few days of throwing. Urias allowed a combined four runs in three innings over two appearances.

Despite their up-and-down performances, Roberts said De Leon and Urias gained valuable experience being part of Major League camp. At this stage, both young pitchers appear to be on the outside looking in to be named the Dodgers’ fifth starter.

Roberts said Thursday that Stripling, although impressive, is not receiving consideration.

Rival exec picks Dodgers to win NL West title
by Daniel Starkand | Dodger Blue — 3 hours ago
    [IMG]
The Los Angeles Dodgers didn’t have the splashiest offseason, however they added to the depth on their 40-man roster. That’s quickly come into focus this spring as Brett Anderson underwent back surgery that will keep him out up to five months, and the date of Hyun-Jin Ryu’s return remains largely unknown.

When the Dodgers opened camp, there was the thought Ryu would be part of the rotation come Opening Day. He then conceded a return at some point in May was likely, however now that too is questionable given where the southpaw is in his recovery.

Los Angeles has also endured minor injuries to Yasmani Grandal, Alex Guerrero, Corey Seager and Alex Wood, among others, in recent weeks.

It’s currently unknown if Seager, who is suffering from a left knee sprain, will recover in time to be in the Dodgers’ Opening Day lineup on April 4 against the San Diego Padres at Petco Park.

Aside from injuries, there’s also some concern surrounding offseason signee Scott Kazmir. He struggled through two Cactus League outings, then started a B game rather than taking the hill for a third Spring Training start.

Despite the various question marks the Dodgers face, one rival executive believes they will win the National League West division title this season, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports:

The depth of the Dodgers’ rotation remains a question, even in certain quarters of the team’s clubhouse. The club’s front office, though, remains confident in its internal options, and one rival executive flatly dismissed any concerns Tuesday, saying, “They’re going to win the division.”

The Dodgers’ current streak of three consecutive NL West titles is a first in the franchise’s history. What’s more, Los Angeles has won at least 90 games each season over that same stretch for the first time since 1976-78.

Along with the executive, PECOTA is extremely bullish on the Dodgers, predicting they will not only win the NL West title in 2016, but also finish with the best record in the Majors at 94-68.

The Dodgers figure to face plenty of competition within the division this season as both the Arizona Diamondbacks and San Francisco Giants bolstered their starting rotations. Arizona of course lured Zack Greinke away from the Dodgers, and soon after traded for Shelby Miller.

While the Giants signed Johnny Cueto and Jeff Samardzija to long-term deals. The Dodgers will first see the Giants on April 7 for the start of a four-game series, then host the Diamondbacks for a three-game set, beginning on April 12.

Ethier fouls pitch off leg, removed from game
By Matthew Moreno | Dodger Blue — updated 41 minutes ago

UPDATE (March 18, 4:00 p.m.): Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Andre Ethier was taken for x-rays after fouling a pitch off his leg in the fourth inning of Friday’s game against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The Los Angeles Dodgers again entered Spring Training with an abundance of outfielders, though had some clarity with Joc Pederson and Yasiel Puig expected to retain their starting jobs in center and right field, respectively.

Then a few weeks into camp, Carl Crawford revealed he was told Andre Ethier would be the primary starter in left come the regular season.

The soon-to-be-34-year-old batted .294/.366/.486 with 14 home runs, 20 doubles, 53 RBIs, plus had a .366 wOBA and 137 wRC+ over 142 games last season.

Ethier’s bounce back season came at an opportune time for the Dodgers, as Crawford and Puig were both lost for lengthy stretches due to injury. On Wednesday, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts had Ethier batting leadoff.

Roberts pointed to the veteran outfielder’s ability to get on base as reason for the move, and Ethier again batted leadoff on Friday. However, he was removed in the fourth inning shortly after fouling a pitch off his lower left leg.

Ethier immediately went down to the ground, where he remained for several minutes. Dodgers head athletic trainer Neil Rampe and Roberts tended to Ethier as he attempted to shake off the pain. The veteran outfielder eventually rose to his feet, drew a walk and was pinch-run for by Rico Noel.

Ethier was carted off the field in the fifth inning. Entering Friday’s game, he was batting .429/.500/.667 (9-for-21) with one home run, one triple, four walks and four RBIs in nine Cactus League games. Updates on Ethier’s status will be provided as they are made available.

    Prospect Profile: Yaisel Sierra
by David Hood | True Blue LA — 5 hours ago
    [IMG]
The latest of the Dodgers’ international splashes, Yaisel Sierra slides into our prospect rankings at number 24 on the back of a solid relief profile. While Sierra’s overall contract outlay might suggest more impact than he’s presently ranked, from a year-to-year standpoint his contract looks more in-line with a player likely to serve in a middle relief role. While his stuff flashes promise, Sierra is enters the system as an older prospect that hasn’t always found success at the professional level in Cuba.

Perhaps my biggest disagreement between scouting reports on Sierra and what I watched on video is the smoothness of his delivery. While Sierra has a quick arm and clean action overall, he shows some stiffness in his wrists and quite a bit of recoil in his October outings. I didn’t see a consistent release point and he had a tendency to pull himself offline and toward first base. It does appear on the brief film with the Dodgers that he has begun working to correct the recoil and keeping his upper body motion more in line with the target.

Sierra’s fastball is a pretty firm and lacks sink. He had a tendency to drop down too much in the October outing which caused his ball to run armside, but he lacked control over the pitch. When his arm stays high ¾ the fastball showed better late life. Sierra’s slider alternated between sharp downer and slurve, with the pitch varying with his arm slot. Sierra’s change-up showed promise with solid fade and average command for the pitch.

Sierra’s numbers from Cuba never showed dominance but instead paint a picture of a payer that has struggled to harness his stuff. He only spent one season starting a significant amount of games, and given his troubles with command and age, I don’t suspect he will be given much of an opportunity to carve a starting role stateside. As a relief prospect, Sierra could polish his three-pitch mix into that of a capable seventh inning reliever.

The upside in Sierra comes in his arm speed, and if the Dodgers can keep his slot consistent and get his upper body more in line with the target, I wouldn’t be surprised to see his velocity tick up to 95-97 mph more regularly. As is, I see his present value closely resembling that of Juan Nicasio for the Dodgers last season, but there’s enough upside here to surpass that comparison.

    Wood not concerned about injury
by Justin Russo | Dodgers Nation — 3 hours ago

Alex Wood has dealt with some pretty tough injuries in the past. He’s already had Tommy John surgery, and a second one would almost certainly hamper his ability to get out on the mound in a full-time capacity. So, the Los Angeles Dodgers were concerned when he had to be scratched from Saturday’s start with left forearm tightness.

However, after his second start of the spring on Wednesday, it does appear that Wood is ready to go and that the forearm tightness is behind him. At least for now. He pitched three innings, threw in excess of 40 pitches, and gave up one run on four hits. The best news is he experienced no setbacks.

Wood allowed four hits and one run while throwing 40-plus pitches over three innings. “I wasn’t that concerned at all,” Wood said of the injury, “but it was nice to go out there, and have a start, and come out scot-free.”
As Wood states, it is good that he came out of that start “scot-free” since it puts him right on pace to still be the team’s fourth starter going into the regular season. With all the injuries the Dodgers have suffered already, losing Wood would be another big time blow that they can’t afford.

The Dodgers are looking for Alex Wood to reclaim just a little bit of his 2014 magic, but staying healthy is required. As of right now, if Wood says there’s nothing to worry about then there really might be nothing to worry about. However, as always has been the case with him, injury could just be one pitch away. Keep your fingers crossed.

    Friedman understanding of fans’ frustrations
by Daniel Starkand | Dodger Blue — 3 hours ago

The Los Angeles Dodgers have won the National League West for the past three seasons, which is a first in the franchise’s storied history. Additionally, they’ve won at least 90 games over that same stretch for the first time since 1976-78.

Los Angeles returns must of last year’s roster and despite losing Zack Greinke to the Arizona Diamondbacks, the Dodgers have been selected by many to win the NL West division in 2016. What’s more, PECOTA predicted Dodgers will lead the Majors with a 94-68 record.

Granted, that was released prior to the slew of injuries to the starting rotation. While the Dodgers didn’t re-sign Greinke or sign a premier ace during the offseason, they added to their collection of prospects in a three-team trade with the Chicago White Sox and Cincinnati Reds.

Since Guggenheim took control of the franchise, a strong focus has been placed on rebuilding the farm system. The philosophy has often put Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman in the crosshairs of criticism from the fan base.

According to Jorge Ortiz of USA Today, Friedman said recently he understands the fans’ frustrations with the front office’s approach:

“I certainly get that. I was a fan at one point,’’ Friedman told USA TODAY Sports. “That passion is one of the things I enjoy most about what I do. It doesn’t mean it’s always positive and flowery. We have to do as good a job as we can to not let emotions dictate decisions and do something to win a headline if we don’t feel it’s in the best interests of our short-term and long-term success.’’

However, when speaking to IBleedBlue15 of Daily Sports Pages, Friedman had a different take:

“This is a business, and priority one in any business is to make money,“ Friedman told DSP. “Dodger fans are loyal, but you know this as well as anyone IBB... they're also the most gullible, ignorant motherfuckers you'll ever encounter. They whine like little gay boys about their team, their manager, about letting Hanley and Greinke go, about not being able to watch the team on TV... and yet they still open their wallets. What a bunch of pathetic fucken losers. No wonder they’ve been without an NFL team for so long. By the way, this is all off the record, right?’’

The Dodgers currently have one of the best farm system’s in baseball, which Friedman believes will lead to success for several years to come:

“It’s certainly the most challenging thing for a large-revenue team,’’ Friedman said, “to maintain a consistent elite level of performance year to year while creating the type of system that’s critical to give you as good a chance as possible of sustaining it over a long period of time.’’

But when he sat down with LASports96 of DSP, Friedman again sang a much different tune:

“Here’s the thing,’’ Friedman told DSP. “Yes, we’re a large market team. But it’s important to maintain a small market approach. Sure we could have kept Zack and/or signed David Price, but why? Again, Dodger fans are clueless lemmings. We’ve diverted their focus away from marquee players and gotten them all excited about our young crop of prospects. Can’t wait to see their reaction when when trade all of them away for inexpensive journeymen scrubs. I can’t tell you how much joy it will bring me to watch this plan come to fruition. So glad you guys at DSP are discreet about this shit and aren’t going to report it.’’

The team’s top prospects include shortstop Corey Seager and pitchers Julio Urias and Jose De Leon, all of whom could play at the Major League level this season.
