If you’re an Orioles fan, feel free to root for the laundry. But let’s not celebrate Francisco Rodriguez.

K-Rod was initially arrested in Aug. 2010 after beating up the father of his girlfriend, Daian Pena. Rodriguez assaulted Carlos Pena at Citi Field after a game, punching him in the face. The incident actually left Rodriguez with torn ligaments in his pitching hand, forcing him to miss the rest of the season. The Mets took the incident very seriously, suspending him for two days. Rodriguez later pleaded guilty to assault charges and was sentenced to undergo 52 weeks of anger management. He was also barred from contacting his now ex-girlfriend, and mother of his twins, for two years.

If that was the end of K-Rod’s story, it might be worth forgiving him. However, he was arrested again last September in Wisconsin after he allegedly beat up a new girlfriend (and, again, the mother of his child). Those charges had to be dropped, mostly because the girlfriend and their housekeeper, an eyewitness, both departed for Rodriguez’s native Venezuela before the trial was scheduled to begin and never returned.

Clayton Kershaw Thanks The St. Louis Cardinals For Humbling Him
by Matthew Moreno | Dodgers Nation -- January 25, 2015

For all his greatness, which now includes an MVP Award, three Cy Youngs in the last four years, and an unprecedented four-consecutive ERA titles, there’s one hurdle Clayton Kershaw has yet to clear.

After putting together a historic season in 2014, Kershaw was set for another postseason date with the St. Louis Cardinals — this time in the NLDS. The same Cardinals who ended Kershaw’s and the Los Angeles Dodgers’ season with a decisive win in Game 6 of the 2013 NLCS.

Despite the momentum Kershaw carried into the 2014 postseason, the Cardinals twice defeated him in the NLDS, including Game 4, which eliminated the Dodgers from the postseason. During his MVP and Cy Young acceptance speech on Saturday, Kershaw ended it with a thank you for the Cardinals:

My last thank you goes to the St. Louis Cardinals. Thank you for reminding me that you’re never as good as you think you are.”

In his career, Kershaw is 5-5 with a 3.46 ERA and 1.27 WHIP in 14 starts against the Cardinals. Kershaw’s 3.46 ERA is the second-highest against team he’s made at least five lifetime starts against. The Cardinals have been an even big thorn in his side during the postseason, evident in the table below:
The lone postseason game the Dodgers defeated the Cardinals in which Kershaw started was in 2009, when he earned a no-decision. Truth be told, Kershaw’s troubles against the Cardinals in October are tied to his surrendering one big inning to his Midwest nemesis.

In Game 2 of the 2013 NLCS, Kershaw was on the wrong end of a 1-0 game as the Dodgers only mustered five hits against Michael Wacha and four Cardinal relievers who followed. Kershaw then held the Cardinals scoreless through the first two innings of Game 6 before a Matt Carpenter one-out double sparked a four-run inning in the third and never looked back.

Although Kershaw gave up a solo home run in the first inning of Game 1 in the 2014 NLDS, he then blanked the Cardinals over the next four innings before giving up another run in the sixth. The Cardinals then erupted for eight runs in the seventh to overcome a 6-2 deficit and further added to Kershaw’s frustration.

With the Dodgers on the brink of elimination in Game 4, Kershaw was handed the ball on short rest and appeared to be on his way towards erasing the unpleasant memory from the year before. That quickly changed in the seventh inning with Matt Adams’ three-run home run that proved to be the difference in the Cardinals’ 3-2 win.

After his Game 1 loss in 2014, there were rumblings the Cardinals were stealing signs and/or noticed something in Kershaw’s delivery, which allowed them to decipher his pitch selection. The Cardinals denied the claim, and so too did Kershaw and A.J. Ellis.

While Kershaw was able to poke fun at his failures, it’s something he’s likely well-aware of and intent on changing if the two teams are to meet again in October.

well, Zaidi put it out there a couple weeks ago i believe it was and you don't go public in aggressive fashion like that unless you have the access to all the money you need to get him signed and you're prepared to spend it. i'd assume Moncada and his reps have probably expressed interest in joining as well. his comments were almost like high stepping to the end zone..let's hope for no Desean Jackson fumble on the half yard line.

Zaidi's comments were also sort of a PR challenge to teams like SF and NYY as well.." step on in for the kid if you like..it'll look great for us when we beat you for him. "

Wonder if any potential delay in the TW/Comcast merger might impact the Dodger tv market being expanded by the start of the season.
    http://www.latimes.com/entertainmen...-merger-opposition-20150127-story.html#page=1

Comcast Corp.'s bold move to buy rival Time Warner Cable in a $45-billion deal once seemed inevitable.

Wall Street figured combining the nation's two largest cable operators wouldn't have much problem clearing regulatory hurdles. Both companies operate in different parts of the country, and wouldn't be seen as anti-competitive. Subscribers, including 1.8 million in the Los Angeles region, would have the same number of choices for pay-TV as they currently do.

But that was 11 months ago — and a lot has changed.

Now, it is unclear whether the U.S. Department of Justice and the Federal Communications Commission will give Comcast their blessing.

"They've had a lot of trouble, more than they thought they would — and rightly so," said Gene Kimmelman, a former top lawyer in the Justice Department's antitrust division who now leads advocacy group Public Knowledge, which opposes the Comcast-TWC merger.

Another LA Times follow up to the purported interest by a group of South Korean investors in buying a stake of the Dodger empire.

    http://www.latimes.com/sports/dodgers/dodgersnow/la-sp-dn-korean-dodgers-20150124-story.html
None of the team's five individual investors – controlling owner Mark Walter, Bobby Patton, Peter Guber, Magic Johnson or Boehly – would reportedly sell their shares. That could mean the sale is coming from the $1.2 billion invested in the team by the Guggenheim Partners insurance funds, controlled by Walter.

All sketchy, I know, but pretty sure insurance funds aren’t used to making investments and not getting a positive return, so something is likely off with the figures coming from South Korea.
The other aspect that seems odd is the South Korean group would not have control of the team. Is this what the stupid-rich do? Drop maybe $600 million into a venture and then step back and say take care of my investment? What are the Dodgers, a mutual fund?

For $600 million, you could buy a third of the teams in baseball and have total control. Why become something of a silent partner in another team simply because they have more cache back home?

"I think we're deeper, so I don't think we're going to be so dependent on the middle of the order," Gonzalez said Monday. "People say that we lost power, but I think we just put the power in different areas of the lineup."

Some of the key acquisitions this offseason for the Dodgers have been shortstop Jimmy Rollins, catcher Yasmani Grandal and second baseman Howie Kendrick. Gonzalez is confident in the new additions to the lineup.

"They're going to battle every at-bat," Gonzalez said. "They're going to be prepared. I'm not saying that we didn't before, but I think the guys that we got are guys that are going to be tougher to game plan for. From that end, it will be a deeper lineup."

    • It is Major League Baseball, not the U.S. Office of Foreign Asset Control (OFAC), that is currently holding up Moncada’s freedom to sign, reports Baseball America’s Ben Badler. Though MLB has already declared him a free agent, and Moncada has met the standards for a “general license” that would leave him free to sign (“unblocked”) in OFAC’s eyes, the league is not permitting Moncada (and others) to reach eligibility based on that general license. Instead, per Badler, MLB has required players sinceYasiel Puig to apply for and receive a “specific license,” creating up to a six-month delay. MLB.com’s Jesse Sanchez adds (via Twitter) that OFAC changed its rules four years ago, with the additional step (presumably, the specific license) being added at some intervening point.
    • As Badler explains, if the process drags on long enough, it could create some intrigue, as teams like the Yankees and Red Sox will face a two-year international signing ban (for all but sub-$300K bonus amounts) beginning on June 15 of this year.

He's ours if it goes past June 15, still think we get him regardless, but if it goes past that date, I think we definitely get him.
