Front office needs to extend Kershaw this off season. Hill has two years left currently

But if they do that, assuming the possible numbers CK will receive, we'll blow past the luxury tax this year, which is apparently what all this activity was about.

I don't think we can extend this year.

Whelp...It was fun to imagine Harper in LA for a few seconds.

The #Dodgers are now poised to be able to grab Bryce Harper next winter while #Yankees will be in position to sign Manny Machado as free agents

It may have been nothing more than a money wash, but this #Dodgers-#Braves
trade now sets the stage for the greatest free-agent frenzy in #MLB history with
#Dodgers,#Yankees,#Cubs all-in next winter for Bryce Harper, Manny Machado
    and company.

    • Shortly after the news of the Dodgers/Braves trade broke, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reported that the Dodgers would likely trade or release Kemp before he ever plays another game in their uniform (he was previously with LA from 2006-14). The Dodgers will first try to flip Kemp, according to Andy McCullough of the Los Angeles Times, who adds that they “appear willing to offer prospects” to help convince someone to take some of his contract.

Salaries are pro-rated based on how many days are left in season. However, as we know from the McCourt days, teams can/do kick in cash in mid-season deals.

thought that might be the case but wasn't sure
makes it a lot more feasible we could pick someone up come 7/31, especially a rental
    thanks for the clarification

Some AL team can take Rios off their hands. That's where he's headed most likely anyway.
    Rios+, that is.

Pretty much means LAD will be trading for Machado next week.

Definite room to work with. Maybe someone will eat like 7 mil per year or so of Kemps deal in another trade, get it up to 33, and can always try to move Grandal and/or Forsythe to get more money

So perhaps closer to 20M after filling out the rest of the 25 man and figuring in Koehler. For shits and giggles lets say LAD shocks the baseball world and targets a Machado/Britton trade in the near future..if they were able to send Yasmani to the O's, that alone would keep the incoming projected arb salaries of Machado/Britton from pushing LAD past the lux tax threshold. Probably won't happen, but one can dream.

i know we are still in contact w darvish
but does anyone think we would be in on arrietta if his price/years drop?
his age is up and his numbers down but he still has that dominant quality
is it possible he could come off the board at 3/75 range?

Cot's contracts is updated to reflect the trade and it shows them to be ~$17.6M below the threshold, this accounts for the arb cases, filling out the 25-man with minimum players and filling out the 40-man (which I guess is done at 150K per). The difference between that and the article I referenced last night is Eric didn't talk about filling out the 40-man ($2.25M) and Arb projections on Cot's contracts are about $4M higher than those on truebluela (which are from mlbtraderumors).

    https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/12Fdcz-v1dHv7WUA6N73JhLNL7cZ-JCaUSRyh8LQvG7A/pubhtml#

The big picture is right now their 2019 tax commitments are roughly ~$87.375M assuming Kershaw opts-out and they can't find a taker for some of Kemp's money, their cash commitments are a bit higher because Turner and Jansen get big cash raises this from 18 to 19, and they will still be on hook for the Olivera and Sierra money. Anyway, the point is if they wanted to go nuts next winter (sign Harper, re-sign Kershaw and add a huge name via trade) to take the payroll all the way back up to $250M (tax dollars) the penalty would only be 20% on $44M overage, $8.8M and $36M comes off immediately following the 2019 season in Kemp and Hill.

Can’t use Cots though because it’s the AAV of each contract, not the 2018 commitment

Their is a sheet for the cash commitments, and one for the tax implications.

If your inference is that the tax number is the players salary for a given year, you're wrong, it is AAV.

    See Eric Stephen: https://www.truebluela.com/2017/12/...8-flexibility-matt-kemp-adrian-gonzalez-trade

Andy McCullough referenced Cot's here: http://www.latimes.com/sports/dodgers/la-sp-dodgers-kemp-gonzalez-20171216-story.html (just below the link beginning with "relax")

Harper share the spotlight with Judge AND Stanton I doubt it BUT money does talk. I think they are more interested in sticking it to the O's and the AL East and get Machado instead.
