Is Hosmer's deal another way to skirt the luxury tax a bit? 5 years @ $20 with an opt out, but AAV is $18 because there are cheap option years.

I don't know but they would be 1st time offenders so the 20% penalty would apply and they can afford it.

Hosmer will make them better because Wil Meyers will go back to the outfield which will lengthen their line-up. Not a threat to us but they did get better and you can't discount Hosmer's leadership skills even in the analytic era.

Love this deal for the Padres because they lose significant draft compensation due to wanting to move from 4th place in the division to 3rd place. Outstanding decision making

The deal is front loaded to entice Hosmer to opt out after 5 years. Has nothing to do with the tax as they aren't even close to it. Dude is so up and down, not sure what they could be getting from him.

Whatever the Rays did tonight was fucking dumb and weird too. Dodgers were said to be interested in Odorizzi(they're interested in everything the Rays are selling), but he was traded for a "meh" prospect. Though Odorizzi is coming off a very "meh" year himself and his FIP the past two years is worrisome. They also DFA'd Corey Dickerson who I am a big fan of . He should probably spend his days as a DH or 1B as he is a mess in the OF. They supposedly facilitated this as they were tired of teams kicking the tires on him and just want someone to get their shit together and come with a formal offer. Rays are now the team to watch as this seems to signify that they are in sell mode. Dodgers are said to have been in on multiple young, cheap controllable starters as little as a couple weeks ago, so it will be interesting if the Rays are finally getting ready for the rebuild and willing to move Archer.

Say what you want but the FUCKTARDS seemingly ran and hid from the tax line and showed ZERO "genius" creativity all winter. Had they landed Stanton in the salary dump move I'd be singing a completely different tune. Plenty of NFL GM's could think cap circles around these pKussy hacks. Sure, they followed the Boehly and GG clan slash mandate, allowing them to pocket some more of the $100 playoff parking fee $$$ next year but still, AF's 7MM salary brain is looking more shoulda-coulda-woulda than ever now. The rest of the NLW division got better while we did zip (watch AZ re-sign JDM next).

AF.... yeah, I'd swerve at the cKunt if he ever dared to walk on my street!

They’re trying to speed their clock up, but they’re legit still a couple years away from the elite guys making an impact(like 1.5 plus yrs). So much rests on their pitching developing that this whole thing could come crashing down. Wonder if they start kicking the tires on some pillow contracts like Moustakas, Lucroy, Walker and some of the lesser pitchers still out there.

And add 1.5+ years to that number in regards to their ability to actually compete once their kids make it up. So yeah, we're probably talking 2021 as the next time they'll be worth a damn. Hosmer will be north of 30 with his best years behind him more than likely. Myers will be north of 30 as well.

Moose has a qualifying offer attached as well, so I hope they sign him too.

I didn’t mean to say the Pads were skirting the luxury tax.

There was talk of the Giants skirting the tax by offering incentives with future compensation. I was just thinking out loud that adding trash option years onto a deal is another way to lower AAV.

I’m still mad about the Stanton deal. That whole deal was set set up on a tee for us to knock it out of the park and look like luxury tax geniuses. We could have gotten under the tax this year and given ourselves less pressure next offseason to sign a big contract bat. As is, Harper is the only position player in next year’s free agency who is clearly better than Stanton.
