Moving slowly and methodically with their sale, perhaps the slow FA market having it's impact there, but moving Longoria earlier this off-season was a pretty good sign that teams should keep in touch. TB doing the right thing here. Even being in the wild card race last season was nothing to write home about..seemed like at one point late last season that almost the whole American League was in the wild card race, so understandably hard for them to feel special.

ROX officially win that Dickerson trade, I suppose. G.Marquez still has some things to work out against RH, but given where he pitches, he had a solid rookie year with solid park adjusted numbers. Some hubbub about the Braves maybe going after Dickerson..I don't really get that one, but AA is thirsty to make a move. However, Dickerson being available could complicate matters even more for JD Martinez. Still 2 years of control with Dickerson and pretty steady power numbers, so the DBacks should have some interest there. Of course, neither would make them better than LAD, but obviously, smaller risk and commitment with Dickerson. They're probably already wishing they had gone for the smaller risk as opposed to forking over all that money for Greinke. We'll see how smart they are and how they maneuver with Goldy's contract situation coming to a head in a year/year and a half.

144M for the 1B version of Andre Ethier. Guess I have to give the Pads some cred for realizing that there's not enough money in the world to make Harper or Machado sign there next off-season. I suppose Hosmer is at least somewhat on their level. They never even took a run at Stanton, perhaps understanding their place there, but then of course, Jeter would've had to actually want to trade Stanton some place other than his old stomping grounds. And Stanton might have shut them down anyhow. Hosmer wins here, for sure..already has a championship ring and now he rides off into the sunset, literally, with money bags galore.

    meh
padres org had only one way to go
problem is they have no baseball minds employed
instead of wisely trying to rebuild, they'll go out and acquire the next wil myers, matt kemp, justin upton
a player like hosmer is the top of their tier
no way a stanton, harper or machado is going to agree to play for tampa bay west

Archer believes Rays could have best rotation in majors
Associated Press — 3 hours ago

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. -- Chris Archer believes the Tampa Bay Rays are capable of having the best rotation in the major leagues.

"We have some very dynamic arms in this room," the two-time AL All-Star said after reporting to spring training, where a bevy of young starters and prospects are competing for roles on a staff that will have a different look after losing Alex Cobb to free agency.

"I say this every year, because we always have a special organization when it comes to arms, but I'm willing to put it up against everybody in the league," Archer added. "And in order for us to back it up, we have to produce. I think everybody in here is capable of doing that."

Archer, 29; Blake Snell, 25; Nathan Eovaldi, 28; Matt Andriese, 28; and Jake Faria, 24, are the leading candidates for the Rays' five-man starting rotation entering camp.

Jake Odorizzi was in the running for the Rays' starting rotation, but he was traded to the Minnesota Twins Saturday night.

Minnesota is sending minor league infielder Jermaine Palacios to Tampa Bay.

Adding to the intrigue is the presence of promising prospects Brent Honeywell, Yonny Chirinos, Jose DeLeon and Ryan Yarbrough -- long shots to make the Opening Day roster who nevertheless may get an opportunity to contribute this season.

Archer, 10-12 with a 4.07 ERA a year ago when he worked at least 200 innings for the third consecutive season, is excited about the possibilities.

"I know there are a lot of pitching staffs out there excited about what they have, but as far as our depth -- one through seven, eight, nine, even 10 guys -- we're going to have three or four guys in Triple-A who could be starting in the big leagues somewhere for somebody," Archer said.

"I'll put it up against anybody's," the right-hander added. "And at the end of the season, we can look at the numbers and see how we all fared."

With just five players 30 years or older -- catcher Wilson Ramos, outfielder Denard Span and relievers Sergio Romo, Chaz Roe and Dan Jennings -- on the 40-man roster, Tampa Bay has one of the youngest clubs in baseball.

The Rays enter 2018 with a streak of 560 consecutive games started by pitchers under 30, the longest such stretch in the majors.

Archer, an All-Star in 2015 and 2017, is eager to lead the way again.

"In order for us to be successful, we have to pitch at our top capabilities," he reiterated.

"We don't have to be anything more than what we are. But we have to produce, just like on the position-player side -- offense, defense, everybody has to be clicking," Archer added. "We talk about that every year, but pitching is our strong suit, and we need to take full advantage of it."

I don't think at all that Bryce or Manny are going there even before they went out and in my opinion improved. I thought you liked Logan White, guess not. We can agree to disagree

The problem with signing Hosmer is that Hosmer isn’t very good

The farm system improvement has Logan's hands all over it. It's hasn't been that long ago since Logan was considered infallible by many people on this board. For the record not myself.

Their farm system is elite and I’m sure Logan is a large part of that. Hosmer is a slightly above average 1B at best who’s reputation is greater than his actually value. If they turn things around it’ll be because of Fernando Tatis Jr and that Gore guy as opposed to Hosmer and Myers

A 75/80M-ish type of player. You get 3 wins out of Hosmer and you feel great..the good, ol' days. Bigger individual expectations now, but the money and lack of team expectations still makes it a soft landing for him. Makes all the sense in the world for him. Not a lot of sense for the team..which I appreciate.

Tatis, who just turned 19yrs old.
    Gore, 18yrs old.
We'll see what they're all about in 2021 at the earliest, IMO

To be clear I didn't think he was bad for us as you probably don't but I just thought his obsession with HS pitcher's was annoying. Although if he obsessed over Clayton I thank him for it, lol.

Mets - " Tebow will be in the majors at some point. "

Nice to see the Mets are back in their old position of headline chasing, trying to outdo NYY at every turn Lol
And NYY trolling them right back with the Russell Wilson trade
What's next? The Yankees signing Kaepernick?

We will never really be clear on what was going on with him and the rest of the FO before the new regime got rolling. He was forced to take guys that would sign under slot, his scouting department was severely stripped down by the end, they stopped giving him funds for int'l scouting and his issues with Colletti didn't help either. He built one hell of a core for this organization before ownership cut his legs out from under him and he started to have to take more gambles. I do wish the org had been able to hold on to him as he has done a tremendous job in SD in a short time. Still can't believe they got fucking Tatis for a broken Shields.

We are 8th solely on depth as aside from Buehler and Ruiz, this club lacks star power and even Buehler's light is dimming somewhat. It is going to have to take some serious leaps forward for the org to stay in the top tier after this season especially if and when Verdugo and Buehler graduate. With that said, the amount of young talent in this org is impressive. That is what you want in your minors is that depth as every year now it seems like some kid takes a step forward in this organization. My money is on May this year.
Didn't realize that the Rockies took such a hit, but they graduated some good young pitching. Giants system remains terrible, though somewhat annoying they never moved their biggest pieces in any of those deals. I do think the guys they moved had the highest floors.

actually he is pretty good but those numbers are Agon in his prime numbers not a vg first baseman
hard to think things won't go sideways w injury and/or the pressure of living up to that contract
beats living in KC and being rich in SD works
not like he needs to chase a ring so maybe he will relax and rake there?
