Dodgers sign pitcher Drew Hutchison to Minor League contract
by Daniel Starkand | Dodger Blue — 3 hours ago

The Los Angeles Dodgers added to their organizational depth this past week with the signing of right-handed pitcher Drew Hutchison to a Minor League contract. Hutchinson was recently designated for assignment and released by the Philadelphia Phillies.

He reported to Triple-A Oklahoma City. The 27-year-old was a 15th-round draft pick by the Toronto Blue Jays in 2009 and made his Major League debut with Toronto in 2012 when he was just 21 years old.

In 93 career Major League appearances (74 starts) for the Blue Jays, Phillies and Pittsburgh Pirates, Hutchison is 31-22 with a 4.95 ERA, 4.32 FIP and 1.38 WHIP. He holds career averages of 8.3 strikeouts and 3.0 walks per nine innings.

He appeared in 11 games out of the bullpen for the Phillies this season before being designated for assignment, posting a 4.64 ERA, 5.71 FIP and 1.59 WHIP with 19 strikeouts and 13 walks in 21.1 innings of work.

Hutchinson’s last outing with Philadelphia came on May 30 at Dodger Stadium when he gave up two hits and a run with three strikeouts and two walks in two innings.

With the Dodgers’ pitching staff depleted by injuries so far this season, the organization’s depth has really been put to the test. Multiple Oklahoma City pitchers have filled in admirably at the big league level, although that has made it very difficult for the Triple-A coaching staff to field a team together with so many moving parts.

Hutchison will serve as depth for both OKC and the Dodgers if he proves he is capable of getting outs. He has a history of being both a starter and reliever, which is something the organization values greatly.

Hutchinson made his Oklahoma City debut on Sunday, allowing three hits and a run in two innings of work, with two strikeouts and three walks.

I like Caleb, maybe for not the best baseball reasons, but I see something in him as a competitor, with a fighting heart, and I feel from his raw unfinished talent, a solid and valuable pitcher will emerge.

I don't think I'll pick on Kike anymore, as he has surfaced as a good kid in my mind, and a damn good and flexible athlete.
and he doesn't do the Pee pee dance any longer so why bother ?
There's always the vastly overpaid Hill anyway and his magic digit to rag on.

I just posted something on him in the minors thread. It's not much, but it is a little positive look for the kid long term.

-Sounds like Kershaw may actually start in New York against the Mets in 4-5 days.
-Ryu is set to throw a bullpen in a couple of days.
    - Buehler will throw his first bullpen in NY on Saturday. God it would be nice if we could get a fucking line change in the next 2 weeks and put Wood on the DL for stretch.
    - Cingrani is not doing well, felt something in his shoulder during the rehab and he's getting pushed back.

Nationals acquire Kelvin Herrera from the Royals for OF Blake Perkins, 3B Kelvin Gutierrez, and RHP Yohanse Morel. Nats #10 and 11 prospects. That is somewhat unfortunate....

DeGrom is having a great year. With that said he is 30. Syndergaard is 25. Syndergaard will cost more and he is the one I prefer long term.

    - Sounds like the Dodgers and Angels were in on Herrera til the end. The Royals ultimately took a package that many in the industry are finding to be incredibly weak. The Royals are known for doing deals that many scoff at as they rely heavily on their very large scouting department that likes to do things their own way(they're a bit old school). Disappointing as the Dodgers could have certainly used him and as for the Angels... get the fuck outta here, you're done.

    - On MLB radio this morning, they were saying that this apparently caught some teams off guard as the feeling was teams were still sorting some things out. The feeling now is there could be an avalanche of moves fairly quickly now and a quiet deadline.

Agreed. Could maybe see if Degrom had this long track record of dominance or post season greatness, but he's lacking there. Rather trade for the younger Thor, not sure it's close either..not that it's going to happen, you mentioned the hefty price

ONLY caveat is that I worry we'll have another Carlos Santana situation. IF we can get away with subbing Wil Smith or our other catching specs. I know a stretch.

We gave away Santana for 1M dollars, essentially. In this scenario, we'd at least get Thor.

    Done in a heartbeat!!!!
Where is the SUPER LIKE BUTTON!!!!
I just looked at Santana stats and even though he was a throw in, which sucks, there wasn't really a place for him. Also since the trade Santana has spent more time at DH and 1b than catcher. To be honest MGT made a decent decision based on the info they had. At the time (2008) Martin and Loney were the young guns and coming off great seasons. Martin was a 1st time AS and had received the SS and GG awards in 2007. Loney had produced 15hr and 67 rbi in only 96 games. So really there was no place for Santana. Also lets remember that Santana didn't hit the bigs till 2010, and after MGT let Beltre get away, they needed to fill the hole at 3b, of which Blake was solid for the next 2 years. Yes hind sight is 20-20, but that trade was not crazy turrible.

To add on to this post,
    - The Padres are said to be taking calls on Brad Hand and you might as well throw that one out the window. The asking price is said to be insane and they are rumored to have asked for Rafael Devers in talks with the Red Sox. They are said to be starting conversations with young, controllable MLB ready talent and sticking to their guns. With the seasons he is having, not a chance in hell.
    - Blue Jays reliever Ryan Tepera is receiving plenty of interest. Tepera is enjoying a solid season and sounds like the type of guy the Dodgers would target with a couple years of control left. Only thing is he is more of a MR not the back end help this pen needs.
