I have to believe that MGT is not that stupid to go into this season without knowing a general idea of where Kershaw is. Sadly I think MGT knows fully well what is going on with Kershaw and is willing to go into the season with the pitching staff as constructed. Unfortunately the best remaining pitcher on market is Keuchel, who is 31. I assume his asking price is way high and IMO not better than what we have. I think signing him now is a gut reaction and given they have waited this long why not wait and see if they can get him for say high AAV but for only 2 years.

I hate to be a negative fan, but Management knows wtf is going on and it’s just bad publicity to say we ain’t signing anyone and we’re letting our depth of minor league pitchers step up.

Just like they had no intentions of signing Harper or Machado. They just play stupid and dumb. We will always continue to be interested but really not on a mission to take it. Just window shopping.

A billionaire, Super Bowl champion, and personal friend of President Trump. Not bad company to be compared to.

they kicked the tires on kluber but the price was absurd
and imo there's a reason why keuchel is still available
    if kersh can't play it's buehler/hill/ryu...
and then some form/combo of maeda/julio/strip/caleb/stewart
not ideal, but still better options than a lot of other teams

yeah, so we passed on harper so we could make a run at who again next winter?
    • The Rockies continue to talk with All-Star third baseman Nolan Arenado about a long-term deal that would keep Arenado away from free agency next winter.

Personally, I don't think it'll get done between Arenado and the Rox. He's already said a time or two that he's tired of losing and that's what's on deck for them. I know they're supposed to be loading up and improving, this, that and the other, but he'll have a better shot elsewhere. Not that it'll be with LAD, but somewhere. And he'll have many suitors..more than Machado and probably more than Harper, as well. There will be the crowd that thinks he can't cut it offensively away from Coors, but he's done well enough on the road offensively in recent years to quiet that noise.

For a guy that hasn't won a ton, talking heads rave about Arenado's will to win and daily competitive fire. Machado may not have wanted to be Johnny Hustle, but it suits Arenado just fine. He leaves it all out there. He checks all the boxes, so if LAD does eventually go after him I'll feel pretty good about it, I don't know about any of you guys. Not that I wanted them to pass on Harper to do it, especially when Harper wants to play for the Dodgers, but still. Plus, Turner is trending down at 3B, is gonna have to move soon enough before the fanbase turns on him. Lol They're gonna have to save Turner from the Kershawesque fall one way or another..although, it'll probably just be Seager moving to 3B, TBH. I could see the Yankees coveting Arenado. Andujar was a revelation offensively, but his defense is historically horrendous. I can see the Yankees feeling like Arenado would give them another Jeter type of captain for the IF. And the NY media is already rolling out the red carpet for him. He'll pop HRs out of that lil park in NY.

Has anyone in the Dodgers organization specifically said we are passing on free agents so we can make a run at Arenado? I'm starting to think this is just fan wishful thinking to justify inactivity.

Dodgers are passing on Stanton to make a run at Harper...
Dodgers are passing on Harper to make a run at Arenado...
Dodgers are passing on Arenado to make a run at Trout...
Dodgers are passing on Trout to...

If it ever came down to a bidding war between the Dodgers and the Yankees, we would get our ass kicked in a second.

Lol Agreed. But I have to admit that Arenado does check more boxes than Stanton, Harper and Machado.
Trout's not even a thing, IMO. That kid is going to the Phillies, pass go and collect $400M. Even if the Phils do spend big on Harper, Trout is still landing with the Phils. They're about to power up in a hurry behind their new TV deal..have a market that holds them accountable

    was just that, fan's hypothesis
i personally thought it was just wishful thinking
but after kasten's comments and [then] passing on harper
i seriously doubt they'll make a run at anyone anytime in the foreseeable future
    unless of course it's...
    • less than 5 years
    • for a good [but not great] player
    • and, above all, they can stay well under the cap

    • Dodgers' manager Dave Roberts provided some more details on Clayton Kershaw’s condition today, telling reporters (including Jorge Castillo of the Los Angeles Times and The Athletic’s Pedro Moura) that the issue is with Kershaw’s throwing shoulder. The southpaw has been working to increase his velocity this offseason, which Roberts speculated as a possible contributor to the soreness. There doesn’t appear to be any major concern about Kershaw, as Roberts said the hurler won’t be undergoing an MRI and is still expected to throw again within a few days’ time. Kershaw is still expected to be on the mound for the Dodgers on Opening Day.

In other words, he’ll be shelved for the first month of the regular season.

The word is that the Phillies owner did everything he could to leave Las Vegas yesterday with Harper signed. He was not able to close the deal and it sounds like Harper is having his final meetings through at least the beginning of the week with multiple teams sending their top brass to LV for the meetings. The Giants are speculated as one of the clubs as well, but no confirmation on that. There is said to be at least two mystery teams involved and maybe even 3.

Mark Walter showing up at camp this morning and saying that the Dodgers have no restrictions on payroll can't be ignored, but likely doesn't mean the team is still involved on Harper... you never know.

There is a report that Harper is waiting for a deal in the neighborhood of $360-380M

The money is one thing, but I get the feeling spending 10 years in Philly is just not his thing. He wants to come out west and be close to family (he’s from LV right?)

If he signs with Philly, he won’t stay the full 10 years. There will be an opt out clause, and he will execute it or ask for a trade.
