Poor judgement call the way I see it..par for the course with their free agent decisions. And Jansen even displayed why they shouldn't have given him that money that very season, not wanting to own up to his shitty series against SFG and blowing reporters off is the moment I remember most.

IIRC, I believe @dodgers and myself were the only ones who didn't want his punk ass back. Fat bitch blew 6 or 7 saves that season going into free agency and never owned up to any of them. He showed who he was that season and they should've believed him, and now they're stuck

I remember wanting them to sign Kenley, but not being very invested in the idea because I thought for sure they would pass on him (and on Hill). I was a little surprised they handed out that contract. But he ended 2016 strong IIRC, and it seemed like a good sign.

But you are right. What are the best FA signings under Friedman? Turner? After that... David Freese and Utley? Many more failures than winners, probably not too different than most GMs. I will take it because the trades, player development and waivers have been so good... but to think what could be if they were just mediocre with FAs? If Cuba didn’t exist?

Not even just his recent shitty performance for me. Kenley's just a big bitch. A big money bitch..the worst kind of bitch. Have to be more selective about who you're paying. And they knew he was a shaky character guy when they gave him the money. Another one of the weak ass kids raised under the McCourt regime.

It was hard to give red ass Jeff Kent the benefit of the doubt at the time, but he had a point. And none of the kids really matured into tough minded, championship caliber ball players. Kemp complaining about having to move off CF for the good of the team and given the boot to SD..Ethier's non lefty hitting ass complaining about not not playing everyday and requesting a trade..Kenley and his lack of accountability..Kershaw's lack of growth revealing itself at the worst times of the season..Martin and the way his tenure ended.

Friedman is caught in the BS web of paying LAD fan favorites and bringing them back for additional runs with the team. We're all talking about Lindor when we know damn well the Cleveland Indian that we're getting is Puig's bum ass

My racism against those players from frenchy/dutchy Caribbean islands has something to do with their work ethic.
Beach people with a lot of weed around like to chill and snack. Cubans got whipped into shape by communism so they have some hunger... but it too can fade once they get the paycheck.
All those Caribbean guys are not trustworthy.
Except the Puerto Ricans because they are kind of the 6th borough of new york city.

    exactly
the worst of his contract is already past
    we are over the hump
    its all downhill from here
we have peak pedro baez level expectations of him right now
if he is decent and doesn't blow consecutive big saves we will be counting our blessings
we expect him to suck and luckily its only two more years
and the org has come out and said that he is no longer the clear cut lead closer on the team
im sure he knows they are looking to bring in a guy who can take the job from him
he went from the organization fearing his tantrums during trade talks about other closers to the guy he is now in less than a year
so there is no worry about the org fearing hurting his feelings
those days are gone and they will finally bring in a top notch reliever to take his job

This is why teams more and more are going towards development over FA signings and why the league is looking at changing the way things are done from a contractual standpoint. Prime years are now earlier in a career, so generally you're no longer getting the performances you would expect from a guy after he is signed. Our best FA signings under the new FO are Muncy, re-signing Hill, Anderson(not the QO), re-signing Turner, Maeda, Morrow, Toles and re-signing Freese. Definitely not bad as they are averaging more than one good to great FA signing a year. So you take the bad with the good and it should not be ignored just how good some of these acquisitions have turned out. I'd be interested to see how their $ per WAR would come out over the same stretch compared to the rest of the league as I would guess that they would be in the upper tier for return on investment. They just need to be better about the bigger deals and at this point I don't know how you can be since there always seems to be someone that is willing to pay absurd amounts of money for 3+ years of a players downfall.

has to be the toughest vacancy/need for a team to fill
still trying to figure out the correlation between relievers and domestic abuse

Just to tack on, here are where the saves leaders from this year came from... ALSO saves do not mean shit, but just showing how these closers are getting to the role.

Picked off Waivers 2 yrs ago
Traded for while serving 80 game suspension
    Homegrown
FA Signing, market hurt with Domestic Abuse history
    Homegrown
Traded for as LOOGY 4 years ago in midst of a bad season
Traded for after being a waiver claim. Originally claimed as a failed starter
    Homegrown - resigned with club
FA Signing as SP, converted to RP this season in yr 4 of contact
    Homegrown
    Traded For

The big ticket relievers are on this list in Chapman and Jansen, but no Melancon, Kimbrel, Morrow or Davis. There is just no recipe for finding the perfect reliever.

I felt this way 3-4 years ago, when the farm was still filling out, but that day is past now and the lux-tax has been reset. Everything is now set up for them to be more aggressive in free agency. When the farm is graduating top tier talent year in and year out, they have this infusion of young talent to help make up for a star's decline.

Of course, their rebuttal would be - " why spend that money when we can just play the kids? " And the easy answer to that is - kids don't win in October. If they show me a Juan Soto, I'll change my tune, but only the Nationals have that kid. Kids aren't leading the way

    truth
look at some of the best closers ever...
    • mariano — blew a game 7 ws save
    • eckersley — blew a ws game 1 save, and essentially the series
    • hoffman — blown save/loss in only ws appearance
they all have times where they suck
but the good ones have a short memory and can't wait to get back on the bump to redeem themselves

    • Chapman signed a 1 year extension to remain with the Yankees through the 2022 season.
    • There are a couple reports tonight that the Nats are said to be overly confident that they will be able to retain Stephen Strasburg and to a lesser extent, Anthony Rendon. There is a belief around the league that the Nationals and Strasburg are already close to a deal.

    actual quote...

“I was like, ‘Dude, you’re unbelievable, bro. You’re like 120 lbs., just absolutely throwing chedd. This is ridiculous.’ The more you’re around him the more you understand his mindset, the person he is, what makes him tick and how he goes about his business.”
